Wheel of Fur-tune Raffle Win 30 days in a Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible from Saab of Tampa by entering the Wheel of Fur-tune Raffle. BIDDING IN THE SILENT AUCTION
1. All Silent Auction items have bid sheets attached or placed nearby. The bid sheet lists the item description, the donor of the item, pre-determined bid increments, and a “Buy it Now” price.
2. If you wish to bid on an item please clearly print your first and last name as well as your phone number on the bid sheet next to a pre-determined bid amount.
3. If you see an item you really want you can purchase the item at any time during the event for the “Buy it Now” price listed on the bid sheet by takin the item and the bid sheet to the check out register for payment.
4. The Silent Auction will be open from 6:30 - 9:30 PM.
5. At the close of the Silent Auction, gather the items you have won along with their bid sheets and proceed to one of the check out registers for payment.
6. Items that received no bids during the Silent Auction will remain available for purchase at the “Buy it Now” price for the remainder of the evening.
7. Volunteers can be identified by their flashing pins and can assist you with any questions you may have.
8. Big Cat Rescue is not responsible for the accuracy of the description of the auction items contained in the following list. In most instances, the donors furnished the descriptions and values of the items.
9. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified, be subject to convenient scheduling by the item donors and may be subject to availability.
10. Please check all expiration dates of gift certificates.
11. Full payment must be made prior to removal of any Silent Auction items from the auction room.

Trucha was our beloved tigress, representing all that Big Cat Rescue stands for. She was bred, literally to death, by her captors; never allowed to raise her young, only to watch them taken away and sold to the highest bidder. After 14 miserable years, she was scheduled to die when Savage Kingdom was closed down and no one wanted her. That is when Big Cat Rescue stepped in.
For the past 2 years, Trucha was showered with all the love, care, and attention a tiger could possibly ask for at Big Cat Rescue. But unfortunately, fate dealt the ultimate blow - to her and to us. Trucha was diagnosed with advanced, inoperable mammary cancer. Though they predicted only months for her, she enjoyed another year of life - which she lived to the fullest. She chuffed her thanks to her keepers right up to the end.
On the last day Trucha was with us, we were able to capture a unique memory of this amazing tigress; her last paw print. A paw print in her enclosure was cast with concrete then beautifully mounted within a gold frame.
As caretakers, she left her prints on our hearts. Now, she leaves her final paw print for you. As we remember the tragedy of her life, hopefully, Trucha’s last impression will inspire a new age of compassion for 1,000’s more just like her. This, like Trucha, is priceless.

The 2009 Guardian Angel Award is presented to Tim Harrison for his work in educating the public about the exotic pet trade and the problems associated with it.
In November 2001, Harrison established Outreach for Animals, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on the dangers of owning exotic animals. This is a message he continues to preach and is the basis of his book Wildlife Warrior, as well as his first title Wild Times.
Harrison also stars in the upcoming film directed by Michael Webber called “The Elephant in the Living Room.” A film about the controversial world of exotic animal ownership within the suburbs of the United States. "The Elephant in the Living Room" offers an unprecedented glimpse into the fascinating subculture of trading and raising the most deadly and exotic animals in the world as common household pets.
“I hope that this film will wake people up to the reality of the exotic animal industry and change their minds about the way that these animals are portrayed and disrespected. I also hope the film will raise public awareness to the inherent danger to humans in raising these deadly animals in our homes... BIG CAT BAILOUT - TWO TIGERS AND LIGER FIND A HOME AT BIG CAT RESCUE
Our federal government allows the private sector to trade in big cats, but when times get tough and the owners can’t feed the cats it isn’t the government bailing them out. All over America there are back yard cages full of starving lions, tigers and leopards. How did they get there? Little to no oversight allows just about anyone to breed and discard big cats. They are only profitable as cubs when they are used for photo ops, petting sessions and entertainment. Where do the big cats go? Once they are a few months old they are too hard to handle and are discarded to unwitting pet owners, shot in canned hunts, slaughtered for their parts or relegated to tiny back yard, or “off exhibit”, cages. Because of the lack of oversight and no requirement to report the death or disposal of these endangered species, they quietly disappear. A few lucky ones end up at Big Cat Rescue. In December 2008 when the airwaves were all a-chatter about the government bailouts, Big Cat Rescue was bailing out a failed sanctuary formerly known as Cougar Haven. Driving away from the abandoned house, with its row upon row of now empty cages, ended a chapter in the 12 year history of David Mallory’s dream to be a big cat rescuer. Mallory’s story is repeated frequently across the nation. It happens so often that it barely makes the news any more and that alone is noteworthy. When Cougar Haven lost its funding Mallory abandoned the facility and the 38 big cats that resided there. Sanctuaries across the nation were full and over the next year all but 5 of the big cats had died from starvation and untreated wounds. 2 lions found a home at a sanctuary in Texas. By the time Big Cat Rescue heard about the situation the last cats to remain were Freckles, a 15 year old liger, Cookie, a 14 year old tigress and Alex, a 12 year old tiger. Big Cat Rescue asked for the help of its supporters and in turn received donations to cover initial costs. With just food, medicine and cage maintenance costing $5000/year per big cat, if these cats live to age 20 the total cost will be $95,000! In December Freckles, Cookie, and Alex were rescued. Freckles had a hole in her jaw that had gone untreated for a long time. All of her canine teeth were broken off from chewing at the chain link of her enclosure. Now, at Big Cat Rescue, she is finally getting the vet care she had been denied. Due to their advanced age, they may not have much time left, but their last days will be their best days ever. Rescuing Freckles, Alex and Cookie gives us and our supporters the instant gratification of knowing that we saved lives. It gives our lives meaning to know that we spend our time and resources so that cats like these can experience compassion. It makes our hearts well up with pride, but it is just a small drop in the bucket. In 2008 we had to turn away 85 big cats and there are so few decent sanctuaries out there who can take big cats that we know most of them ended up dying or in horrible, overcrowded conditions. The people who make money from cubs and full grown big cats want to dump them when they are no longer useful and just keep breeding and abusing. We do not accept animals from places that are just continuing to breed, sell, trade and exploit big cats. Laws to end the trade in big cats are the most effective means to end the suffering. Each big cat that we rescue means an increase of $5,000 per year in expenses so your support is critical to each of our cats. In order to provide care for these three new cats we will need to raise $95,000. Even people who cannot afford to donate much in the way of money can still be a huge part of the solution by educating others. By telling others about the plight of captive big cats, writing your lawmakers, and sending letters to the editor when you read about big cats in the news you are saving thousands of big cats from being born into lives of confinement and deprivation. Our goal is a world where all big cats live free and with your help we can do it.

Care of our cats. The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home we can for the abused, abandoned and retired cats in our care. We do this by building enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on our 45 acre site, by providing the best nutritional and medical care possible, and by having active operant conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for their physical and psychological well being.
Education. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. We urge people to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. We accomplish this through educational guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is the world’s largest and best resource for information about exotic cats.
