DAVE SKINNER 307 TECHNICAL ARTICLE Ornamental Costus (1) DAVE SKINNER (2)* ABSTRACT In recent years the spiral gingers (genus Costus) have become more and more popular as ornamental garden plants. Dave Skinner describes these plants, including his approach to identification of New World Costus, corrections to some common identification errors, information about cold hardy species, and information about Costus hybrids and cultivars. Keywords: spiral gingers, Costus, identification 1. INTRODUCTION had persisted for many years. I was fortunate that in the 1970’s Dr. Paul Maas had published a complete monograph About 20 years ago I began to focus my gardening of the neo-tropical species, with an identification key, full interests on gingers, and ultimately on the so-called “spiral descriptions and illustrations. gingers” in the plant family Costaceae. I was enthralled by Then in 2005 I made my first trip to the tropics to see the diversity of flowering forms and colors and the beautiful these wonderful plants in the wild growing in their native spiraling architecture of these plants. I soon found there habitats. I was hooked! I absolutely fell in love with the were some species of Costus that grew to 3 meters and sights and smells and sounds of the tropical forests and more in height, while others such as the African species would follow that first trip to Costa Rica with many more Costus spectabilis is flat to the ground with a mere height trips, at every opportunity, to see these plants in Costa Rica, of a few centimeters. In some species the leaves are deep Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana and forest green in color with a silvery mid-rib stripe, others are Brazil.

  • Evaluation of Costus Species and Their Use As Indoor Potted-Plants
Evaluation of Costus Species and Their Use as Indoor Potted-Plants C. Gonçalves, C.E.F. Castro, J.A. Azevedo Filho and G.M. Dias-Tagliacozzo Instituto Agronômico, Av. Barão de Itapura, 1481 Caixa Postal 28, CEP 13001-970, Campinas, SP Brazil Keywords: Tropical plants, plant domestication, adaptability Abstract Eighteen species of Costus, nine of them naturally occurring in Brazil, were maintained during a period of 24 months. They were evaluated plant development parameters such as: a) stem and leaves characteristics (position, hairiness, brightness and distribution); b) flowering (plant age and duration); c) occurrence of pest diseases; d) adaptation to drought and shade conditions; and e) plant vigor, as an overall measure of adaptation to indoor cultivation. The species of natural occurrence in Brazil evaluated were: C. amazonicus (Loesener) Macbride, C. arabicus Linnaeu, C. comosus (Jacquin) Roscoe, C. cuspidatus N. E. Brown, C. productus Schumann, C. lanceolatus O. G. Petersen, C. lasius Loesener, C. scaber Ruiz & Pavón, C. spiralis (Jacquin) Roscoe. The other species evaluated were: C. barbatus Suesseng., C. curvibracteatus Mass, C. erythrophyllus Loes., C. laevis Ruiz & Pavón, C. malortianus Wendl., C. pictus D. Don., C. speciosus (Koening) Sm., C. spicatus (Jacq.) Sw., e C. stenophyllus Standley & J.L. Williams. The result showed that the most adapted species for indoor plant cultivation were: C. curvibracteatus, C. amazonicus, C. erythrophyllus, C. malortianus, C. cuspidatus and C. lasius. INTRODUCTION The ornamental plant market, locally and internationally, is constantly looking for the diversification of its product offerings with new or improved plant materials. Among tropical flowering plants there is a great number of species with forms, colors and exotic appeal, in addition to their excellent post production durability.

Summary LUCKING R. 1998. Ecology of foliicolous lichens at the "Botarrama" trail (Costa Rica), a neotropical rain forest. III. Phorophyte ranges and patterns of phorophyte preferences. - Phyton (Horn, Austria) 38 (1): 175-199, 12 figures. Phorophyte ranges and patterns of phorophyte preferences in foliicolous lichens were studied by clustering of individual phorophytes on the basis of their lichen species composition. Foliicolous lichens exhibit broad phorophyte ranges and low specifity. Phorophytes of the same species only cluster together as long as their leaf characters are sufficiently different from each other, but the number of discriminat- ing foliicolous lichens is low. A distinct grouping effect of phorophytes with similar foliicolous lichen diversity indicates that phorophyte preferences are quantitative rather than qualitative, resulting in different diversity stages rather than different species composition.

Alice ABSTRACT. A phylogenetic analysis of molecular (ITS, trnL-F, trnK including the matK coding region) and morphological data is presented for the pantropical monocot family Costaceae (Zingiberales), including 65 Costaceae taxa and two species of the outgroup genus Siphonochilus (Zingiberaceae). Taxon sampling included all four currently described genera in order to test the monophyly of previously proposed taxonomic groups. Sampling was further designed to encompass geographical and morphological diversity of the family to identify trends in biogeographic patterns and morphological character evolution. Phylogenetic analysis of the combined data reveals three major clades with discrete biogeographic distribution: (1) South American, (2) Asian, and (3) African-neotropical. The nominal genus Costus is not monophyletic and its species are found in all three major clades.
