27 $7 0, 000 an enchanted evening at the auction

“The Enchanted Forest,” the eleventh annual Night of the Dragon auction, was a shining success. Held at the Hilton Hotel and Spa at Short Pump on February 16, the event drew 350 attendees and included a silent and live auction, with musical entertainment by the Faculty Lounge Lizards and Andrew Morton ’13 . The event raised more than $70,000 for the Governor’s School Foundation and booster groups through the sale of 375 items, including getaways, tickets to FOUNDATION SPOTLIGHT: special events, gourmet dinners, jewelry, art and more than a dozen themed gift baskets.

Educational and The Foundation is grateful to the volunteers who helped with the Extracurricular Activities auction, including event co-chairs Karen Akens, Terri Clifton, Melissa Shaw and Susan King and their planning committee as well as the booster groups. The Foundation thanks our corporate sponsors Plow & The Annual Fund campaign makes it possible Hearth, 2nd Order Solutions, RiverFront Investment Group, Agin - for students to take field trips that enhance court Capital Management, Leahy Consulting Services, Thompson, their classroom learning. The students first toured the Capitol building and then broke into smaller groups to visit a variety of locations, including the National Portrait Gallery, Senator Mark Warner’s office, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court.

“The trip afforded our students the oppor - tunity to see government in action ,” said Karl Zweerink, Counseling Department Chair, who led students on a “behind the scenes” studio tour of National Public Radio.

John Wilkes, Global Studies Depart - ment Chair, took his group to visit with US Senate Historian Donald Ritchie. “We are excited to give students the opportunity to deepen their under - standing of those topics central to the mission of our school, and we appre- ci ate the support of the Foundation in making these trips happen,” he said.
