  • American Heritage Center
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING AMERICAN HERITAGE CENTER GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RESOURCES Child actress Mary Jane Irving with Bessie Barriscale and Ben Alexander in the 1918 silent film Heart of Rachel. Mary Jane Irving papers, American Heritage Center. Compiled by D. Claudia Thompson and Shaun A. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein By Ron Palumbo “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” would probably be the last film anyone would think of as divisive or controversial. But one of its stars hated the script; one regretted doing it; another horror icon refused to see it; theater exhibitors complained about it; censors edited it; and horror fans reviled it. Even so, “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” was an instant hit when it was released, and has re- mained a perennial favorite from its 1959 debut on television and 8mm home movies, through VHS, la- Bud Abbott and Lou Costello encounter Frankenstein (Glenn ser disc and Blu-ray releases. Though this condition is much more prevalent than is generally thought, the medical proFession has traditionally regarded it as an abnormality that has to be corrected, as a result oF which others decide to which sex such individuals will belong but gender assignment does not solve problem oF gender identity. Strong cultural taboos in most societies keep intersexuality a secret and the participants argue that prejudice will continue as long as intersexuality is considered a disease. This documentary raises the issues involved through the stories oF Sally Gross and Nombulelo Soldaat, with additional comments From the medical proFession. Basically it argues that the use oF corrective surgery should be leFt to as late as possible, so that the person concerned can make an inFormed decision, and should never be taken without their consent.
