This area so rich of history and tradition, surrounded by centuries-old woods of holm-oak interspersed with rolling vineyards, will impress you with its echanting beauty. Monteriggioni - Located in the most ancient part of the Chianti region called "Classico", in the heart of Tuscany, Monteriggioni is a charming medieval castle built by the Republic of Siena in 1213 to defend the border with the hostile Republic of Florence and take control over Via Francigena, the pilgrims' way leading to Rome, which already since the 13th century was following more or less the same track of the modern Via Cassia. Monteriggioni is also famous to be mentioned by the poet Dante Alighieri in his "Divine Comedy": an inscription recalling Dante's words can be seen on a side of the north gateway of the castle. Thermal Springs - Set in breathtaking scenery of the Tuscan landscape, 30 Km East from Siena, the rich waters of Rapolano thermal pools offer you the chance to unwind and regenerate yourself in a truly magical ambience. The precious spring waters which bubble up from the ground at San Giovanni have notable therapeutic properties, recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health. They are particularly effective in dealing with complaints relating to articulation of the joints, the respiratory system, dermatological ailments, and muscular problems. Not just a relaxingly luxurious day out, Rapolano springs are also a fountain and health and wellbeing. The San Giovanni resort offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a day in relax with thermal pools, park, garden and restaurant. • A GIS Solution for Excavations: Experience of the Siena University LIAAM
A GIS Solution for Excavations: Experience of the Siena University LIAAM Vittorio Fronza, Alessandra Nardini, Federico Salzotti and Marco Valenti Dipartimento di Archeologia e Storia delle Arti – Università di Siena Via Roma, 56 – 53100 Siena, Italy e-mails: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] LIAAM website: http://www.archeo.unisi.it/archeologia_medievale/welcome.html Abstract It is our intention to present the experience accumulated in the last decade by LIAAM at the Department of Archaeology and Art History - University of Siena, Italy. During these years we specialised in developing solutions managing every kind of informa- tion produced by an archaeological project. We work on different scales (from regional surveys down to detailed records of all the finds). All the data is administered within a system made up of three components: different GIS platforms, an alphanumeri- cal database and a media database; these are linked by a system level application called OpenArcheo, directly engineered and developed at our Laboratory. The basic concepts of our system are the multidirectional links between information types (which allow the user to query and retrieve all the information related to a feature starting from any of the components mentioned above), modular organisation of architecture in order to implement the ever changing variables and detail levels of archaeo- logical research that suit the specific needs of every single project, and of course, user-friendliness making the management of complex data possible to anyone who has a basic knowledge in the use of computers. In short, what we try to do is optimise the management of information produced by archaeological projects and allow the archaeologist to have all the different kinds of data at hand in real time.

  • Val D'orcia 1
VAL D’ORCIA Sweet round-shaped hills, changing colour according to the season, low valleys along the Orcia river, parish churches and restored farms here and there, often hiding in a forest of cypresses. Such are the characteristics making the charm of Val d’Orcia incomparable, an extraordinary synthesis between nature, art and deeply rooted traditions. This beautiful area of Tuscany is under the authority of the Val d’Orcia Park, instituted to maintain and develop the heritage of a region to promote its typical produce. The fertile countryside of Val d’Orcia, cultivated with respect and wisdom, produces excellent wines, olive oil and high quality cereals. The landscape is deeply marked by man’s intervention aiming to enrich the natural beauty with sobre religious and civilian works of art. It is difficult to explain with words the serene charm emanating from the lands of Val d’Orcia in the spring, when the hills turn green, in the summer when the yellow colour of sunflowers and wheat fields dominates the area, in the beautiful fragrance of a variety of plants. In the south of Bagno Vignoni, olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields are replaced by a Mediterranean bushland while in the Mount Amiata area opens out a thick forest of chestnut and beech groves. Mother Nature, especially generous with the Val d’Orcia’s people, did not forget to create thermal springs for rest and care. The Via Francigena goes through Val d'Orcia near the small village of Bagno Vignoni, visited by famous people and pilgrims. Already inhabited in the Etruscan period, the Val d’Orcia keeps architectural vestiges from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
