    A GIS Solution for Excavations: Experience of the Siena University LIAAM Vittorio Fronza, Alessandra Nardini, Federico Salzotti and Marco Valenti Dipartimento di Archeologia e Storia delle Arti – Università di Siena Via Roma, 56 – 53100 Siena, Italy e-mails: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] LIAAM website: http://www.archeo.unisi.it/archeologia_medievale/welcome.html Abstract It is our intention to present the experience accumulated in the last decade by LIAAM at the Department of Archaeology and Art History - University of Siena, Italy. During these years we specialised in developing solutions managing every kind of informa- tion produced by an archaeological project. We work on different scales (from regional surveys down to detailed records of all the finds). All the data is administered within a system made up of three components: different GIS platforms, an alphanumeri- cal database and a media database; these are linked by a system level application called OpenArcheo, directly engineered and developed at our Laboratory. The basic concepts of our system are the multidirectional links between information types (which allow the user to query and retrieve all the information related to a feature starting from any of the components mentioned above), modular organisation of architecture in order to implement the ever changing variables and detail levels of archaeo- logical research that suit the specific needs of every single project, and of course, user-friendliness making the management of complex data possible to anyone who has a basic knowledge in the use of computers. In short, what we try to do is optimise the management of information produced by archaeological projects and allow the archaeologist to have all the different kinds of data at hand in real time.

    VILLA DI LEONARDO historical house Wedding Meetings Club Welcome to Sodo, Sinalunga, Siena Background The villa is an authentic and enigmatic da Vinci treasure, to be explored and experienced as a unique and harmonious architec- tural construction faithfully reproducing two designs for a villa by Leonardo da Vinci, with its façade and two projecting wings on two floors creating a courtyard, and the portico to the rear with 5 arches and overlying terrace, situated on a small hill. The villa is also found in the centre of the famous Map of the Val di Chiana drawn by Leo- nardo during his lengthy stay in the valley in 1502, at the service of Cesare Borgia. Pictorial and architectural evidence of the presence of Gian Antonio Bazzi, ‘Sodoma’, Baldassarre Peruzzi, Francesco di Giorgio Martini and Raffaello in the immediate vicinity, show that the surrounding area was an active architectural and artistic breeding ground for some of the greatest renaissance artists, who le- arned the lessons of da Vinci and were depicted as a group in the fa- mous School of Athens in the Room of the Segnatura in the Vatican. Accomodation The villa is available to families or groups on a weekly basis or for week-ends, events and ceremonies, business meetings, for holidays and family reunions, or special occasions among friends. The villa has 9 large luxurious bedrooms with double bed and single bed accommodating up to 28 people, 8 bathrooms, two fully equipped kitchens, a courtyard, a large internal room with fireplace and wi-fi, a spacious portico looking out over an elegant park and a panoramic terrace with a view over the hills and woods of the Val di Chiana.

    MONTEPULCIANO’S PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – c.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES IN FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS Two Volumes Volume I Koching Chao Ph.D. University of York History of Art September 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis argues for the significance of castellated civic palaces in shaping and consolidating Florence’s territorial hegemony during the fifteenth century. Although fortress-like civic palaces were a predominant architectural type in Tuscan communes from the twelfth century onwards, it is an understudied field. In the literature of Italian Renaissance civic and military architecture, the castellated motifs of civic palaces have either been marginalised as an outdated and anti-classical form opposing Quattrocento all’antica taste, or have been oversimplified as a redundant object lacking defensive functionality. By analysing Michelozzo’s Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano, a fifteenth-century castellated palace resembling Florence’s thirteenth-century Palazzo dei Priori, this thesis seeks to address the ways in which castellated forms substantially legitimised Florence’s political, military and cultural supremacy. Chapter One examines textual and pictorial representations of Florence’s castellation civic palaces and fortifications in order to capture Florentine perceptions of castellation. This investigation offers a conceptual framework, interpreting the profile of castellated civic palaces as an effective architectural affirmation of the contemporary idea of a powerful city-republic rather than being a symbol of despotism as it has been previously understood. Chapters Two and Three examine Montepulciano’s renovation project for the Palazzo Comunale within local and central administrative, socio-political, and military contexts during the first half of the fifteenth century, highlighting the Florentine features of Montepulciano’s town hall despite the town’s peripheral location within the Florentine dominion.
