4 ABSTRACT X-Files and the Technological Thought: Mechanistic Civilization and the Utopic Projection of Men and World Based on the theoretical propositions of Francisco Rüdiger (2002, 2006, 2007, 2008) and Lucien Sfez (1994, 1996, 2002), and acknowledging authors such as Isaac Asimov (1984), Adam Roberts (2000), that analyze Science Fiction, Scott Bukatman (1998), André Lemos (2002), Sydney Eve Matrix (2006) and Erick Felinto (2005), that analyze the phenomena of cyberculture, we intend to guide an analyses of a specific cultural product: three selected episodes from the sucessful television show from the 1990’s and early 2000’s, X-Files (1993-2002). Those backgrounds speak of the transformations that contemporary society experiences in relation to the new technologies. From this point of view, the objective here is to identify the articulation of certain imaginaries related to the technological thinking and the utopic projection of the world as they reveal themselves in the narrative of this Science Fiction TV show. KEYWORDS: Communication, Cultural Studies, Technological Thinking, New Utopias, Cyberculture. “Teu pai encarregou-me de ensinar-te tudo isto, para seres um dizedor de palavras e um fazedor de feitos” O discurso da Fênix, Ilíada, ix. 443. 6 “Psychologists often speak of the denial of an unthinkable evil or a misplacement of shared fears. Anxieties taking the form of a hideous monster for whom the most horrific human attributes can be ascribed. What we can’t possibly imagine ourselves capable of we can blame on the ogre, the hunchback, on the lowly half-breed” -- Dana Scully, no episódio Post-Modern Prometheus. “Fear. Its’s the oldest tool of power. If you’re distracted by fear of those around you, it keeps you from seeing the actions of those above you” -- Fox Mulder, no episódio Blood.

Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky. Kyberpunk zasazujeme do historického a literárního kontextu. Z toho důvodu jsme zvolili kvalitativní komparativní metody k analýze vybraných recenzí z českých a zahraničních periodik. Cizí mediální ohlasy zahrnují texty z angloamerických mainstreamových médií (The New York Times, The Washington Post) a akademických žurnálů (Science Fiction Studies apod.) Tuzemské recenze jsme převzali z novin MF Dnes, periodik Respekt, Instinkt, Týden, Literární noviny a specializovaných médií (anarchistický fanzine A- kontra, Ikarie).

ISSN: 2342-2009 Fafnir vol 3, iss 2, pages 7–16 Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research journal.finfar.org Schismatrix and the Posthuman: Hyper-embodied Representation Curtis Carbonell Abstract: This paper argues that the “posthuman” is a dominant trope for SF, providing a justification for trans-and-posthumanist SF as inherently fantastic. To do so, it reads Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix stories as offering trans-and-posthuman representations definitive for twenty-first century SF, ones in which embodiment and materiality are prized over disembodied forms. Ultimately, these foundational stories represent posthumans within the context of the modern fantastic, an impulse in modern studies that foregrounds the increasingly imaginary elements defining contemporary, Western culture. Keywords: Science Fiction, Posthumanism, Transhumanism, Fantasy Studies, Schismatrix, Bruce Sterling. Biography and contact info: Curtis D. Carbonell, PhD, teaches English as an assistant professor at Khalifa University of Science, Technology, and Research. He recently co-edited the Palgrave Handbook of Posthumanism in Film and Television (2015). He has also recently published work on Aldous Huxley with “Misreading Brave New World” and "Brave New World" in Post-and-Transhumanism: An Introduction (2014). He is interested in how the posthuman emerges in science fiction and fantasy studies, as well as in how analog- and-digital game studies are emerging as new fields that describe complex modes of cultural production. The human nervous system filters, categorizes and distorts the external universe until the individual can truly be said to create the world in which they live. The process of enculturation by itself usually creates the reality in which most people live. Thought is imposed by the cultural environment. Values, beliefs and even behavioral paradigms are detcnnincd by the social status quo. People live in a shared illusory reality, a consensual hallucination, without realizing its true nature, thereby abscond ing themselves of all personal responsibility. They believe they know truth. Individuals have the potent.ial to control these illusions, foster individual thought and promote rapid changes within the existing socio-cultural mileau.

  • Discussion About William Gibson
Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Gary Westfahl (June 2020) Gary Westfahl, now Professor Emeritus at the University of La Verne and formerly employed at the University of California, Riverside, has retired to focus exclusively on research and writing. His many books on science fiction include two of the University of Illinois Press's Modern Masters of Science Fiction series – “William Gibson” (2013) and “Arthur C. Clarke” (2018) – the three-volume “Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy” and “Hugo Gernsback and the Century of Science Fiction.” Marina Akushskaya: What's the main difference between Gibson's early and more recent works? First, there are of course different ways to define Gibson’s “early works.” To me, that would refer to his contributions to science fiction fanzines in the 1960s and 1970s, though I am probably one of the few people who has ever read them. They oddly do little to suggest that he would blossom into an accomplished fiction writer, since he then focused on writing poetry and journalistic nonfiction, and he also drew numerous cartoons. Yet he has continued throughout his career to produce a considerable amount of nonfiction, much of which recalls his earlier efforts and demonstrates both his skills and interest in writing nonfiction. If one defines his “early works” as his publications in the 1980s, it is clear that he initially felt most comfortable writing short fiction, and even his novels tend to contain episodes that could be extracted and published, with minimal editing, as short fiction. But he was determined to master the art of writing true novels, and one can observe in early novels his deliberate efforts to experiment with more complex plots and multiple protagonists; he also prioritized the creation of fully realized female characters.

  • Boundaries in Cyberpunk Fiction: William Gibson's Neuromancer Trilogy, Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix, and Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash
BOUNDARIES IN CYBERPUNK FICTION: WILLIAM GIBSON'S NEUROMANCER TRILOGY, BRUCE STERLING'S SCHISMATRIX, AND NEAL STEPHENSON'S SNOW CRASH by Michelle Toerien Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Stellenbosch Supervisor: Mr. R. Goodman March 2000 Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration: I, the undersigned, hereby declare that the work contained in this thesis is my own original work and that I have not previously in its entirety, or in any part, submitted it at any university for a degree. Signature: Date: Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT Cyberpunk literature explores the effects that developments in technology will have on the lives of individuals in the future. Technology is seen as having the potential to be of benefit to society, but it is also seen as a dangerous tool that can be used to severely limit humanity's freedom. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it.

  • Neuromancer , Crack, the Net, Rock 'N' Roll and His Latest Book, Idoru, in Which He Investigates the Mechanisms of Celebrity in the Modern Age
Generated by ABC Amber LIT Converter, http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html About these Study Guides I created these study guides to help my students prepare for literature classes. They are meant to serve several functions. 1) Some of them provide background to help readers understand what they are reading and why they are reading it (the historical status of the works). 2) They provide useful information, explaining allusions, obscure terms, etc. in the texts and provide translations of passages written in languages other than English. 3) They try to focus students' attention on issues that we will discuss in class. Rationale One of the most common student complaints in literature classes is that they can't figure out what the teacher expects them to get out of the assignments. Homework turns into a massive guessing game, failing which, students wait for the teacher to clarify things in class. This makes for sluggish or nonexistent discussions. Students using these guides can read with more purpose. They know what issues I am going to want to them to deal with in class and can prepare much better. I require my students to prepare written answers to the questions in these guides and come to class prepared to answer any one of them. At the beginning of class I collect the notes along with the quizzes. Not every question must be answered in the notes but they must show a diligent effort at preparation. Since I began using these guides, few students come to class without having both read and thought about the assignment, and discussions have improved enormously.

This thesis demonstrates how cult cauterizes ambiguity and functions as a framing agent for unpopular politics in popular culture. In tracking the flows and hesitations in the postwar period through the rise of the New Right and identity politics, this thesis shows how cult contains moving and malleable meanings that maneuver through everyday life. It is a slippery and slight subject that denies coherent categorization in definitional frames.
