Abstrakt Cílem této práce bylo zmapovat kritické ohlasy na zásadní kyberpunková díla od autorů Williama Gibsona, Neala Stephensona a Egona Bondyho, přičemž jsme se zaměřili na romány Neuromancer, Sníh a Cybercomics. Kyberpunk zasazujeme do historického a literárního kontextu. Z toho důvodu jsme zvolili kvalitativní komparativní metody k analýze vybraných recenzí z českých a zahraničních periodik. Cizí mediální ohlasy zahrnují texty z angloamerických mainstreamových médií (The New York Times, The Washington Post) a akademických žurnálů (Science Fiction Studies apod.) Tuzemské recenze jsme převzali z novin MF Dnes, periodik Respekt, Instinkt, Týden, Literární noviny a specializovaných médií (anarchistický fanzine A- kontra, Ikarie). Práce také obsahuje teoretickou část, v níž jsem se zaměřili na definici a historii tohoto science fiction žánru. Navíc zahrnuje interpretace jednotlivých románů. Výsledkem bakalářské práce je odlišný pohled literárních kritiků na kyberpunkové hnutí, a to zejména na romány Neuromancer, Sníh a Cybercomics. Také ukazuje vývoj kyberpunkové literatury a odlišnou roli tohoto žánru v České republice. Přínosem této práce je rozšíření vědomostí v oblasti kyberpunku, které mohou sloužit pro další výzkum na poli science fiction literatury a mediálních studií. -

To do so, it reads Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix stories as offering trans-and-posthuman representations definitive for twenty-first century SF, ones in which embodiment and materiality are prized over disembodied forms. Ultimately, these foundational stories represent posthumans within the context of the modern fantastic, an impulse in modern studies that foregrounds the increasingly imaginary elements defining contemporary, Western culture. Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Gary Westfahl (June 2020) Gary Westfahl, now Professor Emeritus at the University of La Verne and formerly employed at the University of California, Riverside, has retired to focus exclusively on research and writing. His many books on science fiction include two of the University of Illinois Press's Modern Masters of Science Fiction series – “William Gibson” (2013) and “Arthur C. Clarke” (2018) – the three-volume “Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy” and “Hugo Gernsback and the Century of Science Fiction.” Marina Akushskaya: What's the main difference between Gibson's early and more recent works? First, there are of course different ways to define Gibson’s “early works.” To me, that would refer to his contributions to science fiction fanzines in the 1960s and 1970s, though I am probably one of the few people who has ever read them. They oddly do little to suggest that he would blossom into an accomplished fiction writer, since he then focused on writing poetry and journalistic nonfiction, and he also drew numerous cartoons. Yet he has continued throughout his career to produce a considerable amount of nonfiction, much of which recalls his earlier efforts and demonstrates both his skills and interest in writing nonfiction. If one defines his “early works” as his publications in the 1980s, it is clear that he initially felt most comfortable writing short fiction, and even his novels tend to contain episodes that could be extracted and published, with minimal editing, as short fiction. But he was determined to master the art of writing true novels, and one can observe in early novels his deliberate efforts to experiment with more complex plots and multiple protagonists; he also prioritized the creation of fully realized female characters. -

The Barry Gray Centenary Concert 8th November 2008 The Royal Festival Hall Barry Gray Centenary Concert By Theo de Klerk Sunday 9th I flew back home after attending the Barry Gray Centenary Concert in the Royal Festival Hall on the south bank of the Thames in London the evening before. I had had a fantastic night – the first performance where Thunderbirds roared from the orchestra live since the unbeatable “Filmharmonic ‘78” concert by Barry Gray himself. It was so long overdue! I got goose bumps hearing the Thunderbirds incidentals and Zero-X taking off. So why did I mark the concert with a 7 out of 10 instead of a 9 out of 10 I wondered. And then it occurred to me: I was there both as an admirer of Barry Gray’s work but also as a seasoned concert audience member. A fan’s verdict So let’s start with the 9 out of 10. The concert event was long overdue and may not be repeated for many years given the problems to organize such a big happening. The Philharmonia Orchestra and a group of soloists and vocalists had to be booked, the Hall secured. Sound, light, publicity – it was all done by a few people, partly as labour of love, and they pulled it off. It all happened because Katie Ford noticed that 2008 was Barry’s 100th birthday and it should not go by unnoticed. Together with her friend Ralph Titterton they were in an ideal position to provide the Barry Gray scores and François Evans eagerly wanted to conduct the orchestra and Crispin Merrell to play the piano. -

Technology is seen as having the potential to be of benefit to society, but it is also seen as a dangerous tool that can be used to severely limit humanity's freedom. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it. -
