  • LIVERPOOL FC V CSKA MOSKVA
STADE LOUIS II, MONACO FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2005 at 20.45 UEFA SUPER CUP LIVERPOOL FC v CSKA MOSKVA Welcome to the eighth UEFA Super Cup to be played in Monaco since the event was switched to a single match at a neutral venue in 1998. Like the first, the eighth involves an English team and Liverpool FC are the only one to have visited Monaco twice – the first time being in 2001, when, as UEFA Cup winners, they took on the champions of Europe, FC Bayern München, and beat them 3-2 thanks to goals by John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Their opponents this time, however, are making history as debutants. PFC CSKA Moskva, to give them their full name, are the first Russian club ever to compete for the UEFA Super Cup and will be more than keen to wave the flag in style against the winners of the dramatic UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul. The UEFA Super Cup is expected to be watched by a capacity crowd of 18,000, with some 5,000 CSKA Moskva fans making the trip from Russia to give their team historic levels of support on an historic occasion. Although the two teams have jointly played almost 300 matches in UEFA club competitions (Liverpool FC almost five times as many as their Russian rivals) this is the first time they have met. Curiously, this was also the case when Liverpool met AC Milan in Istanbul and when CSKA Moskva took on Sporting Clube in Lisbon. This is the first time that the UEFA Super Cup has been disputed by two teams who scored three in their respective finals.

  • AC MILAN V LIVERPOOL FC
Final Istanbul 25 May 2005 AC MILAN – LIVERPOOL FC ATATÜRK OLIMPIYAT STADI, ISTANBUL WEDNESDAY 25 MAY 2005 at 21.45 local time 2004/05 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE THE FINAL AC MILAN v LIVERPOOL FC Welcome to the first final of the UEFA Champions League to be played in Turkey and the 50th final to be played since this competition was born as the ‘European Cup’ in 1955. It involves two clubs of enormous European tradition who have played a combined total of fourteen previous finals in this competition. But, whereas AC Milan have played four previous finals and added two more titles since the Champion Clubs’ Cup evolved into the UEFA Champions League in the 1992/93 season, the European crown has eluded Liverpool FC for the last 21 years since they defeated AS Roma on penalties at another Olympic Stadium - in Rome. This match represents the first European summit between two clubs who have won the title ten times. The two clubs have jointly played over 500 European matches yet have never met in UEFA club competitions. Even though the luck of the draw made AC Milan the ‘home’ team at this final, it remains to be seen whether they display ‘home’ form against their English opponents. Whereas they have never lost to English visitors in Milan, their record outside Italy is not brilliant. The 1-0 at Old Trafford in the first knock-out round was their first victory in England. AC Milan’s only other success outside Milan was the 1-0 win against Leeds United AFC in Salonika in the Cup Winners’ Cup final 32 years ago.

  • 001-016 Introduction
Introduction FC Barcelona celebrate victory at the Stade de France. The 2006 UEFA Champions League victors have no problems with the rulings on ‘locally-trained’ players introduced for the 2006/07 season. PHOTO: FOTO-NET Season 2006 – 2007 Contents Season President’s Message 3 2006 / 2007 1st Qualifying Round Results 4 2nd Qualifying Round Results 6 3rd Qualifying Round Results 8 Group Stage 10 Regulations 14 2 President’s Message The fifteenth season of UEFA Champions League football is a special one. A year ago, we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first-ever final in the old ‘European Cup’ and using that as a good excuse for some nostalgic reading of the history books. This season, the emphasis is well and truly on the future - the future of the game and the future of the people who play it. I’m referring to the new chapter in the regulations of this competition, where four places in each squad are earmarked for ‘locally-trained players’. You might not think that this is a major change. But, as time goes by, more places will be reserved for them and the 2006/07 campaign marks the first step in what I think is a very right direction. It was a subject we had discussed in great depth within our Executive Committee, within all sectors of the game and with people in political circles. And it is a decision which has my wholehearted support. Fortunately, I am by no means the only one who believes that talent needs to be developed and not just bought.

V této knize vás Hughesovi dotazovaní provedou branami melwood- ského tréninkového hřiště a nahlédnete i do oné svatyně – liverpool- ské šatny.
