We obviously had no shortage of rain related issues, but we recovered and completed the sea- son in a timely manner. I am also pleased to report that our fall team participation is very close to the level of last year. As we head into the fall season, please remember to show the umpires the proper respect and realize that profanity will not be permitted or tolerated. Also remember that no alcoholic beverages are permitted anywhere at any of the Fairfax County Park Authority fields. Once again, the umpires continue to perform at a very high level. Thanks to Jason Yovich, his committee and the staff for an exceptional job. Our umpires performed at an average rating of 83% as rated by the manager, a percentage we are all proud of. It is that time of the year again that the Rules Committee will meet and undertake revisions and consider new rules that will help our overall program. If you have rule change comments or suggestions, please contact FAS staff by email or phone to get your voices heard! The Budget Committee will also be meeting soon to establish the budget for the upcoming year. The Long Range Planning Committee continues to meet and represent the field needs of our program to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Park Authority and the Department of Commu- nity and Recreation Services. We had a record turnout for the annual Homerun Derby of 2008. We had thirty two partici- pants come out and test their strength at Braddock Park. Congratulations to Troy Hamilton for hit- ting twenty homeruns in the last round of play to be named the winner of the Homerun Derby. Thanks again to Jason Yovich for organizing this event and also thanks go out to the staff and all of the volunteers who participated and made this fun event run smoothly. The upgrading of the FAS computer system continues to progress at a steady pace. Next year, teams will register and submit applications and rosters online. This will enable more accurate records and more convenience for our customers. We thank DeBellas Solutions, out of Texas, for working so diligently on this project and we know it will be a tremendous enhancement for both our teams and the FAS staff. The upcoming elections for the Executive committee will take place in November. The posi- tions of Second Vice President and Secretary are open, and will be selected from the members of the Board of Directors. Let's continue to have a great, fun-filled season and finish the 2008 playing season healthy! Thanks to all of you for your continued support and participation. FULL COUNT 4 SEPTEMBER 2008 What’s the Call? By Sharon Sealock Play as received from an FAS manager: One out, winning run on first base, probably one of their slower runners. Next batter (a player they had been courtesy running for all night) singles, mov- ing the winning run to second base. They call time, Courtesy Runner (CR), who replaces the runner at first (that runner goes to the dugout). Some of their guys start popping the coach for not using the CR at second base, so he sends the CR to second and brings the player from the dugout back out to first. I go out and challenge the maneuver and the coach tells the umpire it was legal because we were still in a timeout, no pitch had been thrown, and the ump agrees. Ruling: FAS Rule 121 states: “A courtesy runner is in the game when they touch the base.” The umpire should have left the CR at first base, and the original runner at 2nd base, and the player who retreated to the dugout, should stay in the dugout. Play: No outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd base. Batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop, who checks the runner at third base, and then throws to first to retire the batter. The throw went over the first baseman’s head after the batter-runner had touched first base. The batter-runner continued safely into 2nd base. After play had finished, the umpire called time and notified the batter-runner on 2nd base that he was out for using the white portion of first base instead of the colored portion. Ruling: The umpire was correct. FAS Rule 120 states: “On any force out attempt from the foul side of first base, or an errant throwing pulling the defense into foul ground, the defense and the bat- ter-runner can use either the white or colored portion.” Since the defense was not “pulled” into foul ground, and the runner had crossed first base a split second before the throw arrived at first, the runner should have used the colored portion.

  • Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism
Journal of Ecocriticism 4(2) July 2012 Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism Nicole Seymour (University of Arkansas at Little Rock)* Abstract I see an irreverent ecocriticism as being indebted to two major developments in and around the field: poststructuralist ecocriticism and queer ecology. Poststructuralist ecocriticism, as many readers no doubt know, can be traced to scholars such as William Cronon, Dana Phillips, and David Mazel. In his American Literary Environmentalism (2000), Mazel stresses that his work is not “about some myth of the environment, as if the environment were an ontologically stable, foundational identity we have a myth about. Rather, the environment is itself a myth, a ‘grand fable’ … a discursive construction, something whose ‘reality’ derives from the way we write, speak, and think about it” (xii). Similarly, the essays in Cronon’s 1996 collection Uncommon Ground taKe aim at simple, essentialist ideals of nature and wilderness; N. Katherine Hayles, for instance, argues that “the distinction between simulation and nature … is a crumbling diKe, springing leaks everywhere we press upon it” (411). Some of this worK may seem dated to those who engaged with poststructuralism much earlier. But, judging by the negative reactions of many ecocritics and environmentalists, it can also be viewed as quite the opposite: reactionary, overstated, heretical.1 Indeed, this worK could be described as perverse for how it breaks with its forebears, which include not just “classic” ecocriticism but also first-wave or conservationist environmentalism. My students often ask me if I think there’s hope for the future of the planet. I tell them I think it’s probably going to hell in a handbasket, and all of us with it.
