Financial Support for Part-time Students

Tuition fee loans will be available from September 2012 for all new students commencing part time higher education courses and this loan will be provided for a maximum of 16 years. Students must study at an intensity of at least 25% of a full time course during an academic year.

My girlfriend Sonia is thinking about doing a part time degree in September. They’ve loads to choose from at the University Centre, I’ve just graduated with a Business Studies Degree.

But what about the tuition fees how can she afford them ? She’s only earning £14000 per year!!

Part time courses are available on an evening so she can still ‘earn while she learns’!!

Part time students studying at least 25% of a full time course will have access to a loan to cover the cost of tuition fees.

So will she get her fees paid even though she’s 24, got a job and earning £14000 a year

Yes, the tuition fee loan is not means tested. i.e. it is not dependent on earnings or household income.

That’s very interesting , I’ve always fancied doing a degree course, I earn £13000 a year and live at home with my parents

Part time students will start to repay their loan from the April after the fourth year of the start date of their course. No repayments will be made until earnings exceed £21,000.

Any repayments due once you are earning £21,000 will be at a rate of 9% on the balance over the £21k threshold eg: at a salary of £25,000, 9% of £4,000 = £30/month only – that equals the price of a daily coffee! 10 The University Centre at North Lindsey College - Prospectus 2012
