G.] reach into the heart of a city: Glasgow: A giant born violently of the industrial revolution. The stuff for ships was handy here. And iron and coal and native skill built this city whose heart is tied to the sea.1 Zitat aus dem Film Seawards the Great Ships, Groß- britannien 1961 Beginnen wir mit einer Zeitreise und wandern zurück in das Jahr 1957.2 Es ist Sommer und wir reisen mit dem Schiff nach Glasgow (Abbildung 1). Unser Weg führt uns zunächst im unteren Teil des Firth of Clyde, eines weiten und mächti- gen Fjords, in dem sich die nicht allzu fernen Berge des schottischen Hochlan- des spiegeln, vorbei an den Ferienparadiesen Rothsay auf der Isle of Bute und Dunoon, wo um diese Jahreszeit tausende Glasgower ein paar Tage Urlaub doon the water verbringen. Angereist sind die meisten von ihnen mit einem der typi- schen Raddampfer, im Volksmund Clyde Puffers genannt. Sie verbinden nicht nur die ›schottische Riviera‹ mit dem Stadtzentrum, sondern übernehmen auch einen Großteil des Warenverkehrs innerhalb der Region. Etwas weiter flussauf- wärts entdecken wir am Nordufer Helensburgh, wo im Jahre 1812 der Ingenieur Henry Bell (1767–1830) das Dampfschiff Comet entwarf, das auf der ersten kom- merziell erfolgreichen Dampfschifffahrtslinie Europas Helensburgh-Glasgow- Greenock seinen Dienst tat.3 Zu beiden Seiten des Flusses beeindrucken uns nun die ersten Werftanlagen mit ihren riesigen Kränen und Helgen. Am südlichen Flussufer fällt die Werft der Scott Shipbuilding and Engineering in Greenock wegen ihrer Größe beson- ders auf. Bekannt geworden ist die Stadt durch James Watt (1736–1819), der durch seine Weiterentwicklung der Dampfmaschine nicht unwesentlich zum Siegeszug dieser Technologie beigetragen hat. Es folgt Port Glasgow.     Talking Scot: English Perceptions of the Scots During the Regal Union By Sarah Katerina Waurechen A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen‟s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada April 2011 © Sarah Waurechen 2011 Abstract From 1603 until 1707, England and Scotland were joined by what scholars have described as the regal union. A dynastic accident that came into being when James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne as well, it forced the two kingdoms to share a single monarch without creating a unified legal system, religious hierarchy, political structure or British culture. This dissertation re-evaluates the resultant Anglo-Scottish relationship by examining what English people actually said about the Scots and Scotland during moments when this union was strained. Specifically, it explores discourses about the Scots that circulated immediately after the regal union, and those which appeared during the Bishops‟ Wars (1638-40), the Cromwellian Union (1651-59), the Popish Plot and Exclusion Crisis (1679-81), and the parliamentary union of 1707 that renegotiated the terms of engagement. By doing so, it challenges widespread assumptions that an uncomplicated xenophobia dominated English approaches to the Scots, and illuminates the existence of a more nuanced Anglo-Scottish dynamic that still informs British politics today. The Scots were too similar to be Other, and too different to be wholly Same – their “familiar alterity” creating difficulties for the English. At the start of the regal union, the notion of what constituted a Scot was malleable and utilitarian, which encouraged the English to reject their partnership in the creation of a new British kingdom.

    Introduction A Celtic Dirk at Scotland’s Back? The Lordship of the Isles in Mainstream Scottish Historiography since 1828 Richard Oram This volume of essays has its origin in a chance conversation in 1993 in which it emerged that no event had been organised to mark the five hundredth anniversary of the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles by King James IV of Scotland. The result was a small academic conference the following year based at Ballygrant on Islay, close to the former symbolic centre of the Lordship at Finlaggan, and plans to bring the papers from that conference together as a published collection. That plan never matured and the conference papers which represented the contribution of different disciplines to the study of the MacDonald Lordship mainly found homes in academic journals or were incorporated into larger research publications. Individually, none came close to offering the chronological breadth or disciplinary breadth that the multi- author collection had promised and, while in the last two decades there has been a renaissance of research into the Late Medieval period in the Western Highlands and Islands of Scotland – focussed especially on the Church – a comprehensive modern overview of the MacDonald lordship in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries has remained a conspicuous absentee on the publications horizon. The essays in this volume, amongst which are two substantially revised and developed papers from that original 1994 conference, are not claimed to constitute such a comprehensive overview; they focus on key themes that illustrate the culture(s) and identity/ identities of the territories encompassed by the MacDonald Lordship at its peak, from portable personal artefacts to ships, buildings and the visual signifiers of heraldry; episodes critical in the development, downfall and disintegration of the MacDonalds’ imperium; and institutions that gave form and substance to MacDonald power.

Over the course of his career, he served many roles in the Scottish government including Governor of Scotland for his absent nephew James I. Albany is famous in Scottish historiography for the murder of his nephew and heir to the throne, David, duke of Rothesay. Chroniclers and historians from the late fifteenth century until today have ascribed to Albany a nefarious royal ambition. This devious ambition supposedly led him to stage coups against his father, Robert II, and brother, Robert III, to seize power in Scotland. Undoubtedly Albany was a deeply ambitious man. However, not much consideration has been given to the idea that Albany, in his governmental roles and as regent for three kings, was not acting on a deeply held desire to sit on the Scottish throne. Rather, Albany’s role in governance is an example of medieval corporate monarchy wherein the entire royal family assisted the reigning monarch in ruling the kingdom. The structure of corporate monarchy has been used previously to examine queens and the role of women in the institution of monarchy.

Beard, Professor of Economics Abstract In 1689 the Scottish Parliament overthrew the Church of Scotland’s Episcopal government and replaced it with a Presbyterian church structure. Traditionally, historians have interpreted these events as evidence of the Episcopal Church’s lack of popularity and as symptomatic of a trend towards modernization and secularization within Britain as a whole. The Scottish Episcopal Church: Religious Conflict in the Late Stuart Period suggests a reconceptualization of the period. Far from being unpopular, the Scottish Episcopal Church enjoyed considerable support throughout the country. This had several important implications for not only Scotland, but for Britain and Europe as a whole. The reformation in Scotland was not a fait accompli established with a few acts of Parliament, but rather a protracted struggle over ecclesiology and theology that began in the sixteenth-century with John Knox, George Buchanan, and Andrew Melville; this was an endeavor only truly resolved in the early eighteenth-century. The Scottish Episcopal Church examines this process and explores the continued centrality of religion in politics and society.
