Entry Supplements for Smoking-Related Lung Diseases Naser A. Alsharairi Heart, Mind & Body Research Group, Menzies Health Institute Queensland, Griffith University, Gold Coast 4222, Australia; [email protected] Definition: Supplements for smoking-related lung diseases are considered as nonfood products and thought to improve health. Multivitamins and antioxidants are the most commonly dietary supplements used by cancer and asthma patients. There are currently no clear regulatory guidelines that include dietary supplements and their effect on lung cancer and asthma patients, particularly in smokers. Several countries have taken steps to overcome challenges in regulating dietary sup- plements in the marketplace. These challenges include inadequate assurance of safety/efficacy, inaccuracy of product labeling, misleading health claims, and lack of analytical techniques for dietary supplements. There is a need to establish standards and regulation of dietary supplement use in patients with lung cancer and asthma. The aim of this entry is to expand knowledge on dietary supplements use and smoking-related lung diseases (lung cancer and asthma). Keywords: asthma; lung cancer; supplements; smokers; nonsmokers 1. Introduction Smoking is known as one of the main causes of lung cancer and the most common cause of cancer mortality in men and women worldwide [1]. Researchers have examined the influence of industry communications strategies on tobacco use, particularly among young people, as well as policy interventions to restrict tobacco industry marketing. Topics covered in this chapter include: . Econometric studies of the impact of tobacco marketing on tobacco use . Econometric studies of tobacco marketing bans and related policies . Population-level cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on consumer response to tobacco marketing, particularly among young potential smokers and current smokers . The impact of other tobacco marketing efforts such as sponsorship, loyalty incentives, and tobacco advertising and placement in entertainment media. An extensive body of research shows that tobacco marketing and tobacco use are causally linked, and that comprehensive marketing bans are effective in reducing tobacco use. Cigarettes Little Cigars/Cigarillos Cost Amount of Tobacco
Since 2000, Iowa teens have had an active role in changing the general social attitude toward tobacco use. When the Iowa Legislature created the Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control within the Iowa Department of Public Health, they stressed the importance of youth involvement in reducing tobacco use among young people. They suggested the best way to do this was to hold an annual Youth Summit on Tobacco. The first youth summit was held in July 2000 with just over 130 students present. More than a decade later, the youth tobacco prevention program grew to include over 4,000 members statewide. 2011 ushered in a new wave of youth and a new environment for tobacco use prevention and control. That same year, ISTEP (Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention) was created. ISTEP saw the need for continued education on the subject matter of tobacco and held their first youth summit as ISTEP in the summer of 2012. During the last two years, ISTEP has grown to have 980 registered members in local chapters statewide. ISTEP is the only youth-led organization changing the tobacco world in Iowa. POINT‐OF‐SALE: TOBACCO INDUSTRY’S LAST DOMAIN TO FIGHT BANS ON ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONS Introduction With tobacco advertising and promotions being either totally or partially banned in the mass media in ASEAN, the tobacco industry has shifted its focus to the point-of-sale (POS), it is now the principal avenue for marketing and promoting cigarettes, particularly to vulnerable minors. Cigarette displays at POS are aimed at keeping cigarettes visible and normalizing the product in the public’s mind. POS outlets are ubiquitous, and there is usually no control over their numbers as well as no regulations over what can be sold, which gives the tobacco industry an easy way to make cigarettes easily available. Most countries in the region allow cigarette advertising and promotions at POS. The Philippines and Thailand are licensing the POS outlets. And Thailand is the only ASEAN country that has a comprehensive ban of tobacco industry advertising and promotions at POS that includes a ban of cigarette packs display. Cigarette packs and cartons must be hidden under the cashier’s counter and its display rack and shelves must be covered. To assess current menthol application levels in the U.S. cigarette market, menthol levels in cigarettes labeled or not labeled to contain menthol was determined for a variety of contemporary domestic cigarette products. Method—We measured the menthol content of 45whole cigarettes using a validated gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method (GC/MS). Results—In 23 cigarette brands labeled as menthol products, the menthol levels of the whole cigarette ranged from 2.9 to 19.6 mg/cigarette, with three products having higher levels of menthol relative to the other menthol products. The menthol levels for 22 cigarette products not labeled to contain menthol ranged from 0.002 to 0.07 mg/cigarette.
