The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139). -

Cigarettes Little Cigars/Cigarillos Cost Amount of Tobacco
Since 2000, Iowa teens have had an active role in changing the general social attitude toward tobacco use. When the Iowa Legislature created the Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control within the Iowa Department of Public Health, they stressed the importance of youth involvement in reducing tobacco use among young people. They suggested the best way to do this was to hold an annual Youth Summit on Tobacco. The first youth summit was held in July 2000 with just over 130 students present. More than a decade later, the youth tobacco prevention program grew to include over 4,000 members statewide. 2011 ushered in a new wave of youth and a new environment for tobacco use prevention and control. That same year, ISTEP (Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention) was created. ISTEP saw the need for continued education on the subject matter of tobacco and held their first youth summit as ISTEP in the summer of 2012. During the last two years, ISTEP has grown to have 980 registered members in local chapters statewide. ISTEP is the only youth-led organization changing the tobacco world in Iowa. To learn more about the ISTEP program and how to get involved, visit www.IowaSTEP.org ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This chapter resource guide was created by a team of youth and adult partnerships, and is intended to assist youth and adults in establishing Youth Tobacco Prevention chapters in the state of Iowa. ISTEP would like to acknowledge Jason Thompson with Generation Free and Barbara DeNekker with the American Legacy Foundation for their inspiration to create this chapter resource guide as well as the following individuals who contributed content in the creation of this chapter resource guide: Julie Bleecker, Erica Anderson, Kim Mills, JoAnn Muldoon, Maggie O’Rourke, Jerilyn Oshel, Don Owens, Sieglinde Prior, Don Shepherd and Sheri Stursma. -

The Impact of Standardized Cigarette Packaging Among Young Women in Canada: a Discrete Choice Experiment
The impact of standardized cigarette packaging among young women in Canada: A discrete choice experiment by Kathy Kotnowski A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Health Studies and Gerontology Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2013 © Kathy Kotnowski 2013 AUTHOR’S DECLARATION I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii ABSTRACT Cigarette packaging is the most prominent form of tobacco promotion in Canada. Tobacco companies are increasingly selling cigarettes in innovative packaging, including the use of slim and super-slim “lipstick” sizes that are primarily marketed towards females. Australia is currently the only country that regulates the shape and size of cigarette packaging. The current study examined the relative importance of five cigarette packaging attributes—pack shape (e.g., “slims”) , brand, plain packaging, warning label size, and price—on perceptions of product taste, harm, and interest in trying, among young women in Canada. A discrete choice experiment was conducted online with smoking (n=211) and non- smoking (n=292) females, aged 16 to 24, recruited from a commercial sample. Respondents were shown 8 choice sets, each containing four packs displaying different combinations of the attributes: pack structure (slim, lipstick, booklet, standard); brand ( ‘Vogue’, ‘du Maurier’); branding (branded, plain); warning label size (50%, 75%); and price ($8.45, $10.45). For each choice set, respondents chose the brand that they: 1) would rather try, 2) would taste better, 3) would be less harmful, or “none”. -
An Analysis of Alcohol and Cigarette Prices in Maseru, Gaborone, and Neighboring South African Towns

The proposed measure is similar to levies that have been implemented in Botswana in recent years. A concern is the possibility that Lesotho’s new levy may stimulate a significant increase in bootlegging between Lesotho and South Africa. This chapter investigates the presence and possibility of bootlegging between South Africa and Botswana, and South Africa and Lesotho, by describing the differences in cigarette and alcohol prices between Gaborone, Botswana, and the nearby South African towns of Mafikeng and Zeerust, as well as between Maseru, Lesotho, and nearby Ladybrand, South Africa. 1 Economics of Tobacco Control Project, University of Cape Town, South Africa. 551 551 Confronting Illicit Tobacco Trade: A Global Review of Country Experiences An analysis of comparative cigarette price data indicated the following: Gaborone and Mafikeng/Zeerust. Overall, average cigarette prices are significantly higher in Gaborone than in nearby South African towns. The cheapest pack price found in Gaborone was nearly five times the cheapest price identified in South Africa. Maseru and Ladybrand. Cigarette prices differ between Maseru and Ladybrand, but much less than between Gaborone and Mafikeng/Zeerust.
