    60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves.     THE NEW “OLD COUNTRY” THE KINGDOM OF YUGOSLAVIA AND THE CREATION OF A YUGOSLAV DIASPORA 1914-1951 BY ETHAN LARSON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair Professor Peter Fritzsche Professor Diane Koenker Professor Ulf Brunnbauer, University of Regensburg ABSTRACT This dissertation reviews the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s attempt to instill “Yugoslav” national consciousness in its overseas population of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, as well as resistance to that same project, collectively referred to as a “Yugoslav diaspora.” Diaspora is treated as constructed phenomenon based on a transnational network between individuals and organizations, both emigrant and otherwise. In examining Yugoslav overseas nation-building, this dissertation is interested in the mechanics of diasporic networks—what catalyzes their formation, what are the roles of international organizations, and how are they influenced by the political context in the host country. The life of Louis Adamic, who was a central figure within this emerging network, provides a framework for this monograph, which begins with his arrival in the United States in 1914 and ends with his death in 1951. Each chapter spans roughly five to ten years. Chapter One (1914-1924) deals with the initial encounter between Yugoslav diplomats and emigrants. Chapter Two (1924-1929) covers the beginnings of Yugoslav overseas nation-building. Chapter Three (1929-1934) covers Yugoslavia’s shift into a royal dictatorship and the corresponding effect on its emigration policy.

It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. As they sought to silence the guns, the mediators behind the DPA struggled with the need not to reward the ethnic cleansing that harkened back to Europe’s darkest hours while having to acknowledge that ethnic cleansing had, in fact, profoundly affected the demography of the country. The result was a complicated structure. Bosnia was reorganized as a consociational federation comprising two entities: Republika Srpska (RS) and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH). In many ways, the territorial restructuring agreed at Dayton could be perceived as ‘ground zero’ for many of the other cases in this volume.

    From Organized Oblivion to Forced Remembering: Memory and Identity among Serbs and Croats (Paper presented at the International Symposium: “The Memory of Violence/Genocide: Its Meaning in the Process of Peace Building,” March 18, 2006, University of Tokyo, Tokyo) Marko Hajdinjak International Center for Minority Studies and Intercultural Relations (IMIR) Sofia, Bulgaria Introduction Control of information and of a shared, common memory is crucial if authoritarian regime wants to keep a society under its control. The authoritarian regimes thus consider it necessary to obtain a monopoly on such control and every alternative source of information and memory is seen as threatening to their rule. In extreme circumstances, such as war, this perception is maximally intensified and any memory which is not in tune with the official one is classified as treacherous. The Communist Party, which came to power in the former Yugoslavia after the World War II, created such official common memory. Although being to a large extent fabricated and tailored to serve the needs of the authorities, this memory was willingly adopted and shared by a majority of population of the former Yugoslavia regardless of their nationality. Among its many shortcomings, the most important was its inability to deal with the World War II ethnic hatred and killings in a constructive way instead of just brushing them under the carpet. The bloody ethnic war was presented as a conflict between the communist-led resistance, supported by all Yugoslav nations, and various military formations, collaborating with the occupying German army. Despite that, the official memory imposed on the people of Yugoslavia did manage to turn the “Brotherhood and Unity” myth into a widely accepted “truth”.
