PHOTO BY JAMES GREIG, YEAR 10 4 WAVELENGTH OUR LADY’S MOUNT COMMUNITY OF CHRISTIAN BROTHERS OLM Community Closes after 110 Years Over the Christmas 2012 holiday break the decision was taken by the Christian Brothers Oceania Leadership Team to close the Brothers’ Community at Our Lady’s Mount on Birrell Street. This closes an important chapter in the history of Christian Brothers in Australia, a chapter that started when the first community of six Brothers took up residence at Waverley 110 years ago in 1903. Shortly after, they opened three schools on a single day – St Francis Paddington, St Charles Waverley and Waverley College (then known as Christian Brothers College, Waverley). The Waverley College community marked the closure of the Our Lady’s Mount Community with a celebration of the contribution of the Christian Brothers to the school over the past 110 years. A special Commemorative Dinner was held on Saturday 4 May, attended by many Brothers with an association with the community. Also attending was Dr Wayne Tinsey, Executive Director of Edmund Rice Education Australia and Br Vince Duggan cfc, Provincial Leader of the Oceania Province of the Christian Brothers. The closure of the Community was a focus of this year’s May Procession Liturgy. Both occasions were an opportunity to show our deep respect and gratitude for the work of the Waverley Brothers over 110 years educating young men at the College. A booklet on the history of the Brothers at the OLM site was produced to mark its closure and is available free of charge by contacting College reception on 02 9369 0600.

    Chairman’s Report The Union will record a small deficit in 2002 however given that the Union’s grant from NSW Rugby Union was reduced in 2001/2002 by half and the Union did not reduce its level of service nor cut programs during the 2002 season this is a fair result. Future savings are anticipated given that in September the Union Office relocated with NSW Rugby Union who have granted rent free office space to the Union at the Sydney Football Stadium. This move was first discussed in 1996 and to finally see it come to fruition has been very pleasing. Early reports suggest that the relocation has been well received by the staff, NSWRU and affiliates alike. We look forward to fostering stronger relations with NSW Rugby Union into the future as a result. A 20% increase in sponsorship revenue has helped minimise costs to clubs and I would like to thank Canterbury International, Coca-Cola, Ricoh, Gilbert, Beiersdorf Australia (Leuko), Australian Rugby Review and major sponsors Interfuse all of whom have been associated with the Union for in excess of five years. The Union also thanks Big Sister Laundry and Icons of Sport for their support. On the representative scene it was pleasing to see NSWSRU take on NSW Country for the first time in many years and I hope that this can once again be an annual representative fixture. Thank you to Peter Duckworth, Peter Walsh and their Management Team for their efforts in preparing a quality representative team and program. I wish to thank my fellow Management Committee Members for their efforts throughout the last year.
