2 RUGBY 2017 TEAM GUIDE Welcome to Season 2017

I want to wish all of the Waverley College rugby community the best for 2017. Last season was a tremendous one for Waverley College rugby and this year looks very exciting as well. With 41 boys and 5 staff going on a New Zealand Rugby Tour in April, changes in the draw for the 2017 season as well as the talented new U13 group coming through it will be a challenging but rewarding season for all. I want to make special mention of the Rugby Supporter Group and their ongoing support and hard work and we hope to have some new members again this year.

Waverley College rugby has a long and rich history which has included producing a number of Wallabies, Australian and NSW Schoolboys. When Waverley is strong at rugby, then the other CAS rugby teams are as well!

I hope all boys and coaches continue the Waverley College style of fierce but fair play; running rugby with the multiple phases that many opposition schools find hard to defeat. I am looking forward to a great season in which our students demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship and we retain the ‘Henry Plume’ Shield for 2017.

Good luck for the season and ‘Go the Waves!’

Stephen O’Donnell Director of Co-curriculum

RUGBY 2017 TEAM GUIDE 3 Welcome from the Convenor of Rugby

2016 was a brilliant year for Waverley College in a number of ways. Waverley made a significant improvement in the HSC school rankings, the Cosgrove Centre was officially opened and the Henry Plume Shield was back at Birrell Street!

The success of 2016 was no fluke. Nor was it through the efforts of one person. 2016 was a year in which Waverley College came together – students, teachers, coaches and parents – to make a positive cultural change.

In 2017 we look to replicate and improve on what we all witnessed in 2016. We aim to support each individual player reach their potential, while making lifelong memories. We aim to make Queens Park a home ground where students, parents and Old Boys can turn up and instantly feel connected to the special community we have. We aim to create an atmosphere where our visiting guests feel welcome and comfortable.

I thank, in advance, the efforts of our hardworking coaching staff, our generous parent supporter group, for putting our boys in positions where they can learn new skills, create friendships and achieve dreams.

To every student who pulls on a Blue and Gold jersey, the expectation is you give your all at training and on the playing field, you are respectful to officials and opponents and, most importantly, you enjoy the game. In the words of the famous chef and food writer, Martin Yan, “When you enjoy what you do, work becomes play.”

I wish all players and coaches the best for the upcoming season and I look forward to watching another edition of exhilarating rugby being etched into the proud Waverley College history books.

WAVERLEY TO WIN!

John McCoy Convenor of Rugby
