While writing my thoughts, then, on the essential elements that would contribute to the future success of our Club, the most obvious factor was the enhancement of player performance at all levels from juniors to representative rugby. However, this alone is not the panacea for success. It is not terribly difficult to develop in players physical fitness, knowledge and improved skills as well as encouraging a willingness to learn and a dedication to the game. These goals are the responsibility of those at the governance and management levels. The more difficult task is that encapsulated in my 2011 statement that: At Randwick this does not merely mean learning the skills of rugby, but rather coming to a clearer understanding of that unique brand of the game known as Randwick Rugby. Most of its adherents would agree that rugby is quintessentially a handball game. Here at Randwick our mantra involves much more. It is made up of five elements: high-level ball skills, in a game played at speed, with a sound strategic base, a sense of adventure and for the enjoyment of the players. Before an entire generation passes through our Club and our culture and history are lost it is critical that we rediscover our brand before we also entirely lose our appellation of the “Flying Greens”. The experience will be like discovering rugby for the first time. It is true that some of our performances in 2012 and in previous years, particularly at the senior level, were below expectations and evoked commentary not unlike the proverb: Like the curate’s egg, good in parts. Suffice it to say, however, that 2012 is behind us and rapid progress is being made in our preparations for the 2013 season.
