Socrates famously said, ‘An unexamined life is not worth living.’ Sometimes it’s easier not to ask questions but on the Alpha Course… we think life is worth exploring. The course is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that’s probably why over 18 million people around the world have already done it!)

Never been to church? Not sure what you believe? Maybe you gave up on church a long time ago. The course was designed for you or anyone who doesn’t go to church regularly.

Ever wanted to explore the meaning of life or ask challenging questions about the Christian faith? Maybe you’re just curious about this church stuff and want to have a a nosy? Alpha doesn’t care about your background, it welcomes all those big questions and it’s free. Can’t say fairer than that right?

Each session begins with food, snacks, that sort of thing, followed by a short talk looking at a different aspect of the Christian faith and time for discussion.

Look out for the details about an Alpha course running Jan - Apr in the parish.

Dearly Beloved,

Zechariah 4.7 in the Amplified Bible says, “For who are you, O great mountain [of human obstacles]? Before Zerubbabel [who with Joshua had led the return of the exiles from Babylon and was un- dertaking the rebuilding of the temple, before him] you shall be- come a plain [a mere molehill]! And he shall bring forth the finish- ing gable stone [of the new temple] with loud shoutings of the peo- ple, crying, Grace, grace to it! “

In these Scriptures, when Zerubabbel wanted to rebuild the temple, he laid the founda- tion, but people came against him and forced him to stop. For ten years, no work could be done. Zachariah, the prophet, came by and told him to do something interesting. He said, “Go get the capstone.” The capstone was the stone that was reserved as the final piece of stone for the building. It was symbolic. It represented the finished product.

Why was it important that he keep the top most stone in front of him? Because every time he looked at it, it would remind him that God would finish what he started. When Zerubabbel was tempted to get tired and discouraged, he would go look at that cap- stone. That was God saying to him, “I’m still on the throne. I’m going to do what I prom- ised. Just stay in faith.”

Today, do you have your capstone – the most important one, the last stone in front of you? Do you have something that represents the final piece to your dreams? Keep that vision in front of you. Keep focused on where you are headed. Get that head stone and thank God for His faithfulness to complete the work in you.

Why not pray right now? Say, “Heavenly Father, thank You for the work that You are do- ing in my life. Please help me to keep the vision in front of me. Show me where to place my focus. Confirm Your Word with signs accompanying as I stay on the course that You have set for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

God bless and keep you in His love, George & Joyce Irwin

Those of you who read our local paper, The Sentinel, will see from time to time letters written by me. Sometimes I write in response to some letter that others have written, fre- quently to disagree with them, especially when they offer insults to the Royal Family, of whom they actually know nothing, other than what is in the media. From time to time there is a letter from ‘atheists’ and lately more from people who are glad to be living in a secular society. It’s like red rag to a bull and I have to restrain myself; after all they are mostly suffering from ‘invincible ignorance’. Of course I often know who the letter writers are and it tempts me to fall out with them on the letter page.

When they talk of Religion being the cause of wars, they are cherry picking history and mostly making of it what suits their own viewpoint, lifestyle, or even their inbuilt excuse for not attending a church or observing the faith of their parents; (God forbid that I lose my Father’s inheritance). It is true mind you, that many innocent Christian people have been attacked and murdered in a war, by those who want to impose their own brand of politics on all sorts of innocent people being persecuted.

Russia was run as a giant prison in the name of the people’s majority, Bolsheviks. After WW2, Russia was allowed to dominate most of Eastern Europe, committing them to live in fear, poverty and food rationing until the Berlin Wall came down.

On Sunday the 13th October the Pope declared as Blest, some 522 martyrs. These were murdered in the Spanish Civil War in the thirties. The Bishop and some 147 clergy of the City of Tarragona were murdered by Marxists, who regarded them as class enemies and fair game, deserving death. There were 24 Brothers of the order of St. John of God. St. John in 1539, in the City of Granada, began looking after the poor and sick. This was what his or- der carried on doing for some 400 years afterwards. One of the Friars was Feliciano Marti- nez, On Oct 4th 1936, he was taken out and shot, he was 73years old.

A student of the Religious Schools, as they became called, Modesto Pamplona, was taken on board a ship with others and shot. He is said to have died cheerfully, saying, that he would be in Heaven soon. He was 29.

There were many more atrocities with the murder of nuns, including 27 Daughters of Char- ity of St, Vincent de Paul. None of these Christian people were combatants but that was the way that communism viewed people who did not hold their views.

CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 11

A book called ‘The Train in Spain’ by Christopher Howse is published by Bloomsbury on November the 7th. I like to read his scholarly contribu- tions to The Daily Telegraph.

Once in power, communism ignored all moral principals, and the evil, springing from the Russian revolution of 1917, became the murderous political norm and situation for many years. In Russia, the murderous Sta- lin had bibles burned and Cathedrals blown up. Well, the bibles are back and the Cathedrals have been rebuilt.

A group of local people, including one of the recent writers to The Sentinel, used to wel- come a visit to Hanley by the remaining few, who had been in the International Brigade. They were to be treated like heroes, including the popular Jack Jones who I personally liked. They were members of the International Brigade who joined in the Spanish Civil War, fighting for the ‘people’. Their enemy, the equally callous General Franco, gave Germany a chance for the Luftwaffe to practice their bombing, on his choice of Spanish cities. The In- ternational Brigade which also had Eric Blair (George Orwell) with them, found themselves frequently at odds with the communists and if I remember correctly, Eric Blair was impris- oned by them.

I worked at various ports around Spain when I worked periodically on Oil Tankers, and as it happened, a Cargo Boat in Valencia. Franco was still in control and Spain was a well ordered country of fairly happy people, happy to bring back the Royal Family. I guess it is what a Monarchy pre- vents as much as what it does. I have been behind the Iron Curtain several times and I can tell you… it was awful. Certainly it has proven that ex- treme politics not Religion is the real Enemy of the People. As for your secular society, where are your YMCA? Salvation Army equivalents? Where do they serve the poor and oppressed? Let them go with the Street Pastors on any night at the week end and see what state some of the young secular citizens are in.

I consider the Christian Faith vital to our country’s well being, and conse- quently the people and that’s just another reason to support the Church. Mind you, the communists used to say that Jesus was the first socialist, but He valued everyone and showed it by example. He too paid a high price for all of us. You’d better believe it!

God Bless. Fred Hall

Dear Children

This month we celebrate a special day. November 30th is Saint Andrew's Day. Here in Weston Coyney we have a church named after St. Andrew , and those of you with the name Andrew can be proud that you share it with a saint.! Andrew lived in Galilee and worked as a fisherman with his father and brother Simon Peter. It was as they were casting our their fishing nets in the lake that Jesus called to the brothers and asked them to follow Him and join Him in His work, preaching the Good news of God's love and healing the sick people as they went along. Jesus must have seen strength, diligence and loyalty in Andrew to have chosen him as one of His first disciples.

The name Andrew means "strong" and Andrew used his strength in organising the crowds which followed Jesus. After the death of Jesus, Andrew dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel in many parts of the world and converting many to Christianity. At times he needed all his strength and courage to defend and uphold his Faith. He suffered a painful death when he too was crucified by the Romans in Greece on a X-shaped cross called a saltire. Hundreds of years later, his remains were moved to Constantin- ople and then to Amalfi in Italy where they are kept to this day.

However legend has it that a Greek monk known as St. Rule had a vision to take a few of Andrew's relics to "the ends of the earth" for safe keeping. He set off on a sea voyage with six monks and nuns and eventually came ashore on the coast of Fife in Scotland at a settlement which is now the modern town of St. Andrew's. The relics which St. Rule transported were a tooth(!) a kneecap(!) an arm(!) and finger bones(!) In medieval times people made pilgrimages to the site to view the relics , but the relics were destroyed in the 16th Century during the Scottish wars. Much later in 1879 the Archbishop of Amalfi gave Andrew's shoulder blade(!) as a relic to St. Mary's Cathedral, in Edinburgh, and in 1969 Pope Paul VI donated more relics , including part of the skull! The relics are now displayed on St. Andrew's Altar in the cathedral.

The St. Andrew's Cross was adopted as the national emblem and flag of Scotland many years before. In 832 AD on the night before a battle between the Picts and the Northumbrians, Angus, King of the Picts prayed for strength and victory. There was a blind- ing light and Andrew appeared in a vision telling Angus that he would see an x-shaped cross in the CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 15 sky above the battlefield on the day of the battle. Sure enough on the day, the King and his soldiers were spurred on by the sight of the saltire in the sky and they won the battle. From then on St. Andrew became their Patron and Protector. Later Scottish soldiers wore the white cross of St. Andrew on their tunics and before battle they knelt in prayer for his protection.

Scotland is one of the few countries to have one of Jesus's disciples as a Patron Saint. There are St. Andrew's Societies throughout the world which celebrate St. Andrew's Day , enjoying Scottish food, Scottish music and Scottish customs. They are proud of their patron Saint. Attending the Church of St. Andrew's in Weston Coyney is a privilege. Why not drop in and see what is on offer for young people. If your name is Andrew remember your special namesake!. Happy St. Andrew's Day!

Uncle Jim

This is our Autumn tree that we decorated in October. We have hand prints as leaves both hanging on the tree and falling off to represent autumn, conkers also hang from our tree. Can you see the hedgehogs in the leaves looking for a nice warm place to hi- bernate? It is the children’s own artwork for the tree and the staff just helped by adding labels to help Literacy development.

We are in the process of raffling an Autumn hamper to raise funds for much needed maths resources. The parents/carers have been so generous that we are able to raffle a smaller hamper off too. We made some delicious Halloween biscuits, the children helped with meas- uring ingredients, mixing, rolling and cutting the shapes. They were then baked and deco- rated with black and red icing.

After half term we will be learning about Diwali, making bonfire night sparklers, which will be good enough to eat, and changing our 3D tree to include the winter theme.

Myself and my family would like to thank you so much for your love and support shown to us during Richard’s illness. Your love and prayers bought us much com- fort which helped to sustain us over the last few months. God bless you all.

The ache of autumn in us

There is a season for everything, a time for giving birth, a time for dying, a time for tears, a time for laughter, a time for mourning, a time for dancing… Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4

Autumn comes. It always does. Goodbye comes. It always does. The trees struggle with this truth today and in my deepest of being, so do I. Every autumn, nostalgia fills me; every autumn, yearning holds me. I cling to the ripeness of summer, knowing it will be many long months before I can catch a breath of lilac, or the green of freshly mown grass. And so I begin my fallow vigil, remembering the truth of the ages: Unless the wheat seed dies, it cannot sing a new birth. Unless summer gives in to autumn springtime will never embrace me. Bangladesh-Christians Pressured to Return to Islam - Sources: VOM Sources, World Watch Monitor

Christians in Bangladesh have been pressured to worship at a mosque and have been threatened with eviction from their village unless they renounce their faith and return to Islam. The Tangail Evangelical Holiness Church in Bilbathuagani village was created on Sept. 8 by a group of 25 Christians who had been meeting secretly for three years. But on Sept. 13, local council chairman Rafiqul Islam Faruk and 200 demonstrators protested the church, and Christians were summoned to his office. Authorities threatened to burn the believers' homes, beat them and evict them from the village if they did not renounce their Christian faith. Eight church members agreed to return to Islam after the threats. The Bangladesh constitution grants every citizen the right to profess, practice or propagate any religion, as well as the right to establish, maintain and manage its religious institution. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10

Nigeria-VOM-Supported Christian Killed by Islamists - Source: VOM Sources

Christian supported by VOM has been murdered by the Islamic militant group Boko Haram, a VOM worker reports. Sunday Luka, a believer with a wife and 14-year-old son, left his home in Gwoza to find a safer place for his family. His life had been threatened by Islamic fundamen- talists, who had already destroyed and burned many churches in the area. Sunday stayed in Mubi with a friend, where he received food and funds from a VOM distribution of relief mate- rials for persecuted believers on Sept. 21. On Sept. 23, Sunday went back to Gwoza to visit his family and give them part of the funds received from VOM. While at home, the Islamists trapped Sunday in his home. They set the house on fire while Sunday was inside, and he died inside the house. Matthew 25:34

Morocco-Christian Convert Temporarily Released - Sources: VOM Sources, ICC

Christian convert Mohamed El Baladi was released from a Moroccan prison where he has been held since his arrest in August. El Baladi's release is temporary, until his official appeal hearing scheduled for Oct. 10. He was initially sentenced to two and half years in prison for the crimes of evangelism and "shaking the faith of a Muslim." El Baladi confirmed to family and friends that during his imprisonment he faced severe abuse and pressure to recant his Christian faith and return to Islam. Police also attempted to force El Baladi to provide the names of other believers, both Moroccan and foreign. Reports from friends of El Baladi stated that they believed his family was upset by his conversion and pressed for a harsher punishment to push El Baladi to recant his faith. Romans 10:11

A new way to share the Christmas story

The Real Advent Calendar is a great way to share the real meaning of Christmas.

There’s a line of the Christmas story and a chocolate star behind each window. Be- hind the final window is a 24-page Christmas storybook. A charitable donation is made to The Children’s Society and its Fairtrade. It costs £3.99. To get your copy of The Real Advent Calendar please sign the sign-up form in St. Andrew’s Parish Office.

Why we need to share the story It might be difficult to believe but recent surveys show that knowledge of the Christ- mas story is fading.

Among 5-7 year olds, 36% don’t know whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas and 72% don’t know Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Among adults less than 12% know the full nativity story and 51% say that the birth of Jesus is irrelevant to their Christmas. This is a tipping point.

The Christmas Starts with Christ campaign hopes to reverse the trend by telling the Christmas story in new ways.

The Real Advent Calendar is designed to support the campaign as a new and fun way to share the Christmas story. You can read more at www.realadvent.co.uk
