Memon MBBS (SINDH), FRCS (EDIN), FCPS (PAK) FOUNDER Former Vice Chancellor Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro. First ever Medical University of Pakistan FOUNDER • Indus Medical College and Hospital Tando Muhammad Khan - Chief Executive, Professional Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. • Ex- Principal (Last) Erstwhile Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro. • Ex- Academic Advisor and Secretary College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan – Karachi. • Ex – President Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology. • Former – Executive Committee Member, Pakistan Medical & Dental Council Islamabad. Question: Sir tell us about your personal and education life. Answer: Well proud to be very much a local boy, born and had primary education at village Saeed Pur about 8 km from here, a nice small classical village of Sindh people living in peace and harmony, friendly, cohesive, honest and caring of each other with no Police station because there was no crime, morning with nice cool breeze from fields and trees around, farmers moving to their fields, kids happily walking to the one and only, Primary School, Cattle bells ringing, horizon with twilight in sky and sun setting somewhere in serene atmosphere. My Grandfather was an Agriculturist, father headed the local school and had great passion for Education did his Bachelors and Masters from University of Sindh, got local school upgraded to AV level which was only up to 3rd standard. In around 1960 when I was in 2nd standard due to local political conflicts many families including ours moved to this town Tando Muhammad Khan and I continued my education at local, that was Municipal High School just down the road and now Government Girls High School. After doing Matriculation in 1964 as there was no College at that time I got admission in Government College Hyderabad, a very prestigious Institution indeed in whole of Sindh, marvelous academic environment, huge reputation, best standards, easily the major turning point in career after joining such a high profile Institution, cleared my Intermediate at fairly high merit and there was no reason not to get admission in Liaquat Medical College in 1966 the only Medical College in Sindh except Karachi, competition being pretty fierce with open merit and only 2 seats each what was for 10 – Districts at that time. Life at Liaquat Medical College which had top faculty in those days, 7 Ph.D. Scholars, Professors in Basic Sciences and Clinical Side only Fellows and Members of Royal Colleges (there was no CPSP at that time) the Academic Atmosphere fully changed and students were heavily committed and career oriented. Graduation should have been in 1971, but due to Indo – Pak war, it was deferred till May 1972. Immediately after doing House Job and Six Months as Lecturer (Demonstrator) in Department of Pathology at Liaquat Medical College, left for England in June 1973 for the Clinical Attachment in London and then worked in Teaching Hospital in Birmingham, Manchester and back to London – had Surgical Fellowship (FRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 1977 and although had fairly Lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and other places but left London in 1979 as my late father said its time to come back so I did, married my wife Dr. Husna, Gynecologist in 1979 and have two daughters the doctors graduated from Aga Khan, now elder Consultant Physician (Hematologist) in United Kingdom, younger Consultant (Pediatrician) in United States of America, Son is Chartered Accountant Ex- Director and Financial Advisor for Euro Arab Bank in London. I had joined my alma mater back in 1979 as Assistant Professor in Surgery and promoted as Professor in Surgery in 1989, then had the privilege to serve as Last Principal of Liaquat Medical College from 1996 – 2001, when the idea was conceived to have Medical University with fair amount of struggle and wonderful cooperation of all Faculty Members, students, media personnel the effort culminated towards the promulgation of LUMHS Act in Jan 2001 the first ever Medical University in Public Sector in Pakistan a unique honor indeed for the Institution and Sindh that was a huge transformation in Medical Education as whole Training, Academics, Research Development, Local and Foreign Ph.D. opportunities. All in all a major step forward what had been a static Medical Education so far. Appointment as Vice Chancellor (Founder) Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences in March 2001 and left in 2007 on certain principles, later on joined College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan – Karachi, as Academic Advisor and Secretary till our selfless friends of Professional Associates (Pvt.) Ltd., came up with a great notion to serve local population in Medical Education & Health Service and established their emerging Institution from 2013. The task again has not been too easy and the job is not finished yet, but determination and commitment is unparallel. Probably best is yet come, where sky is the limit. 3 INDUS MEDICAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL Tando Muhammad Khan Sindh EXCELLENCE THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATION INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE BY PROF. JAN MOHAMMED A.
