Christians and Muslims have been involved in exchanges over matters of faith and morality since the founding of Islam. Attitudes between the faiths today are deeply coloured by the legacy of past encounters, and often preserve centuries-old negative views. The History of Christian-Muslim Relations, Texts and Studies presents the surviving record of past encounters in authoritative, fully introduced text editions and annotated translations, and also monograph and collected studies. It illustrates the development in mutual perceptions as these are contained in surviving Christian and Muslim writings, and makes available the arguments and rhetorical strategies that, for good or for ill, have left their mark on attitudes today. The series casts light on a history marked by intellectual creativity and occasional breakthroughs in communication, although on the whole beset by misunderstanding and misrepresentation. By making this history better known, the series seeks to contribute to improved recognition between Christians and Muslims in the future. Volume 1 covers the years 600 to 900, this volume carries the history from 900 to 1050, volume 3 takes it on to 1200, and volume 4, which is currently in preparation, takes it further from 1200 to 1500. It is hoped to continue the history through the five hundred years from 1500 to 2000 in further volumes in the series. This and the other two volumes up to 1500 cover the geographical area of what can loosely be called the extended Mediterranean basin, while the other volumes will follow Muslims and Christians through all parts of the world as they have recorded their attitudes about one another and their mutual encounters in a multitude of new circumstances. The intention of this project is to include within its scope documented accounts of all the known works written by Christians and Muslims about one another and against one another. These accounts are designed to provide a starting point for scholarly investigation into the works and their authors, and into whatever relationships exist between them, paving the way for a full and detailed history of Christian-Muslim relations and all the currents and influences comprised within it. Of course, it is more than a single individual or group could accomplish, and the project leaders have drawn upon the expertise of the wider scholarly community, which has been readily and generously given, and have been assisted by leading authorities in bringing together entries that hopefully reflect the latest scholarship, and in some instances take it forward. Naturally, this scholarship does not stand still, and so updates on details of the entries are invited, together with additions and corrections where, despite all best efforts, there are omissions and mistakes. In this volume, like its predecessor and the others that are planned, there is an initial introductory essay that surveys relations between the faiths in the period, followed by a series of essays on works that are of main importance to Christian-Muslim relations but do not fit easily into the format adopted for entries on individual works. While viii foreword the topics covered in these essays include information of fundamental importance for the attitudes of Muslims and Christians towards one another, the individual elements of which they are made up – scattered mentions in historical and geographical works, single clauses in treaties and commercial agreements, and isolated legal statements amid large bodies of rulings and regulations – each presents a tiny part of a picture that only becomes more complete and comprehensible when they are all brought together. Following these essays come the entries that make up the bulk of the work. Something should be said about the principles that have been used to determine what has and has not been included in the bibliographical history. As is mentioned above, the basic criterion was that a work is written substantially about or against the other faith, or contains significant information or judgements that cast light on attitudes of one faith towards the other. Thus, by their very nature apologetic and polemical works are included, while, with some notable exceptions, large historical and geographical works are usually not, even though they may refer to the other in passing. Only works that contribute in a major way towards building the picture of the one as seen by the other and of attitudes between them are included. These principle criteria are easily applicable in many cases, but they prove difficult in a significant minority of instances. An inclusive approach has therefore been adopted, especially with respect to works that may contain only small though insightful details or only appear to touch obliquely on relations, and also to works that are no longer extant and whose contents can only be inferred from a title or a reference by a later author. It is possible that future discoveries will either confirm these decisions or show that they have been too broad. Another criterion that should be explained is that inclusion of a work was decided according to the date of its author’s death, not according to the date when it appeared. This is because so many works from this period have no indication of a date, though it has led to evident anomalies at either end, where authors are mainly or almost entirely active in one century but have died at the beginning of the next: to cite a glaring example, the historian al-Yaʿqūbī, who gives a most instructive account of the life of Christ in his Tārīkh, is included in this volume because he (probably) died after 900, even though his history was complete before 880. If this seems arbitrary, it is balanced by the consideration that any other criterion would also involve decisions that might easily be challenged. foreword ix Each entry is divided into two main parts.     Sergo Ratiani Differing Political Theologies of Differing Eras Terms and Problem Specification Carl Schmitt introduced the term ‘political theology’ into modern po- litical science. In his opinion, ‘all significant concepts of the [modern] science of politics are secularized theological concepts’.1 Political theology describes a method that makes it possible to detect traces of theology in modern po- litical discourse. The concept of political theology has become a subject of investigation for many scientists. For example, Armin Adam in his work ‘A History of Po- litical Theology’ talks of the broadening usage of this term.2 We are interested in that aspect of political theology that deals with Church-State relations and the theological foundations of the ideological side of these relations. This subject interests us from many angles: Firstly, the Church is a societal community and, from a certain perspec- tive, itself comprises a ‘polis’ that is based on theology. Secondly, there is the issue of relations between the ‘Kingdom of God’ and an earthly power, which comprises relations between a spiritual author- ity and a secular power. Thirdly, how the Church provides the functioning of certain political systems with a theological discourse. Fourthly, how the Church paves the way for its policy by elaborating a theological discourse. Fifthly, the problem of the extent to which one political system or an- other exerts influence on the Church’s theological discourse. We shall discuss this topic using the example of the Georgian Ortho- dox Church. We shall see what political theology it elaborated in differing eras and towards differing political systems.

    Ishkani Irene Giviashvili Ishkani is located in the high mountainous village of the same name Işhan, overlooking once e beautiful valley of Chorokhi river. The village belongs today to the vilayet of Artvin, once being part of the historic Tao region of Medieval Georgian Kingdom. Ishkani functioned as an important ecclesiastical center until the Ottoman occupation of the region in 16-17th cc. On the site of Ishkani the remains of a grand domed church and a small hall chapel are survived; in recent years, during the excavations of the site remains of several other churches and structures were revealed. Studies of the Ishkani started with E. Takaishvili, who visited the monument during his field survey of 1917. Ishkani was largely discussed by W. Djobadze. Ishkani became a turning point in started the studies of Georgian monuments in Turkey. Dr. Mine Kadiroglu has dedicated her Ph.D. and later a monograph to Ishkani. Ishkani became a gateway through which the Turkish scholarship later was built. Ishkani is the first Georgian site in Turkey, where the restoration works started. The restitution project was made by Anfora Mimarlik Restorasyon, and the restoration works were conducted by the firm Osman Gulsum (2012-2016), the conservation works of the frescos and the floor was made by ArkIstanbul. Since the rehabilitation of the site, it has been closed and is inaccessible for the visitors. History of Ishkhani goes back to the VII century. According to The Life of Saint Grigol Khantsteli, written by Giorgi Merchule, Grigol together with his disciples visited the site and found the church abandoned and widowed.

    Kostas Kardamis Ionian University Un Italiano in Corcira: Severiano Fogacci’s music-related activities during his exile in Corfu (1831-1846)* Some historical background Severiano Fogacci, the main subject of this essay, lived in an era of liberal movements and social upheaval in the Italian peninsula and Europe in general. He can be considered a typical member of the post-napoleonic Italian generation, since he was born in 1803.1 His birthplace, Ancona, then belonged to the Papal States and he therefore was brought up in an environment, which was rather conservative. Moreover, his family did not belong among the privileged of that city. Severiano lost his father, Giovanni, when he was very young and this led to his entry to the local seminario, where he began his studies. After five years there he continued his education in the public high school of Ancona, during a period full of political changes. Fogacci early demonstrated a passion for Latin and Italian literature, as well as a desire to become familiar with the aesthetic trends then developing. His political orientation in an era of social and political upheaval was becoming clearer at this time as well: by 1824 he had established connections with the carbonari, as he did not consider the papal administration successful in managing the new post-restoration conditions in the Italian peninsula. Thus Fogacci became a fervent patriot and supporter of Italian independence. In 1826 Fogacci moved to Bologna, where he worked as a secretary for his uncle and soon Fogacci became the commander of the city’s division.

    INTRODUCTION of Prof. RICHARD CLOGG by Professor Theodore Pappas Ladies and Gentlemen, It is well known that the Ionian University started its courses for the first time in 1985 in Corfu, where the Ionian Academy, the first Greek university, had functioned from 1824 to 1864. The Ionian Academy had been the vision of and was established by Frederic North, Earl of Guilford, a British Philellene who had special bonds with Corfu that he had visited in 1791, when it was still under Venetian rule. Close to twenty years later, when the British had conquered the Eptanissos and Corfu, he got the idea to establish in Ithaca a University manned by Greek scholars, in which Greeks but also students from other Mediterranean and Balkan countries would be educated, so that their going to European Universities for higher studies wouldn’t anymore be necessary. The explosion of the Greek War for Independence was the cause for moving the seat of the University to Corfu. The official inauguration of the Ionian Academy took place on the 29th May 1824 and its operation was ended immediately after the Union of the Seven Islands with Greece. In the 40 years of its operation several distinguished personalities were teaching, like: Constandinos Assopeios, Christoforos Philitas, Ioannis Karandinos, Andreas Kalvos, Neofytps Vamvas, Constandinos Typaldos, Athanasios Politis, Petros Vrailas-Armenis, Constandinos Zavitsianos and many others. The Ionian Academy, despite its ingrown problems had been a university that had been designed with very high standards and specifications, during an especially difficult period. Though its founder was British, its character was national from the beginning; it was in fact an Hellenic university that had to operate in a medium under foreign rule.

The main thrust has been to problema- tize the concept of nation as most people have tended to perceive it since the 19th century. To reject, that is, the romanticized idea of a nation as an age- old, pre-given entity one is supposed to speak of with awe. The new scholars of nations and nationalism disdain these approaches as “primoridialist” and “essentialist” - which, for them, is synonymous with unprofessionalism and inadequacy. On the other hand, most of Georgian intellectual tradition, in- asmuch as it is preoccupied with the concept of the Georgian nation, takes the essentialist-primordialist approach for granted - even when authors dis- play sharply critical attitudes towards different aspects of Georgian social or political realities. Georgian sociologists who teach contemporary theories of nationalism rarely apply them to Georgian material.1 The latter attempts are rare and mostly belong to foreign scholars.2 The aim of this article is to propose a tentative trajectory of the evolu- tion of the idea of the modern Georgian nation. I will not go into theoretical debates on nationalism but start by briefly summarizing my general approach towards the problem. Then I will proceed with a general description of two major components of the Georgian national idea: identity-building on the one hand, and the Georgian nation as a political project.

After an introduction, I look at Vrailian texts where it is emphasized that Hellenism and Christianity are the two components of Greek national identity. Does this mean, though, that for Vrailas these two elements express a similar mode of being? There are passages that can support this claim. Still, Vrai- las’ reader should not suppose that the Corfiote philosopher uncritically assumes a linear transition from Hellenism to Christianity. But if Christianity denotes the emergence of something new in history, how can it be compatible with Hellenism? Vrailas’ answer is that as with the Mosaic Law, Christianity did not come to abolish Hellenism, but to fulfill it. Furthermore, the association of Christianity with Hellenism enabled the latter to survive throughout history both in the West and the East. Besides, for Vrailas variety has always constituted the “harmony of Hellenism”.
