Convocation marks a day when the whole University turns its focus to its reason for being. This is a university where the next generation of leaders is born and where students from all walks of life can achieve their dreams. Every one of you has much to be proud of today and I encourage you to take great satisfaction in seeing the results of your hard work! Today we look to the future with great anticipation and optimism. University of Winnipeg graduates have much to offer Canada and the world beyond our borders. Be persistent, pursue your goals and know that you will have our continued support along the way. Mr. Robert Silver BSc (Hons) Chancellor, The University of Winnipeg 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT To the graduates of 2013: It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg, to offer congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today, we celebrate the hard work and resolve you have demonstrated in earning your degrees. Your commitment, determination and resilience are important qualities you take with you as you approach a new chapter in your life. UWinnipeg is uniquely urban and richly diverse. Cultures, ideas and a connection to the global community flourish here. As new graduates who are transitioning to become tomorrow’s community leaders, entrepreneurs, academics and activists, I urge you to remain flexible, curious and open to new opportunities and ways of understanding the world throughout your careers. Learning has become a lifelong privilege and responsibility. The UWinnipeg campus around us is also in transition, changing to better serve future generations of students with world-class facilities, while strengthening our downtown and inner-city community. We are creating new, relevant academic programs and reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in post-secondary education. That too, is our greatest strength. You are part of this vibrant community university. As new alumni, you are now members of the UWinnipeg family, joining more than 45,000 people who have passed through our doors. Last fall, we launched a new Future Fund to support continued innovation, special projects and research on campus and to help carry on UWinnipeg’s tradition of academic excellence. I invite you, as graduates, to consider how you might one day give back and create a better future for UWinnipeg students. Today, it is also important that we pause to recognize and value the support and encouragement you have received from your family, your professors, friends and fellow students who have helped you realize your dreams. It is our sincere hope that your time at the University will serve you well and inspire you for many years to come as you move forward to create a difference in your community and your chosen field. On behalf of our faculty and staff: congratulations and please accept my best wishes for oury adventures ahead.
