  • January 2018 Gallery Exhibit: HOPE Houston Artist and Long-Time WAS-H Friend and Instructor Ellen Orseck Judged the January Monthly Exhibit
Watercolor Art Society - Houston | Washrag Newsletter | February 2018 1 February 2018 January 2018 Gallery Exhibit: HOPE Houston artist and long-time WAS-H friend and instructor Ellen Orseck judged the January Monthly Exhibit. Her prevailing comment on all the work was that each piece, in its own way, spoke to the much needed quality of HOPE in our world today. The winners are: 1st Place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” 2nd Place - Lynda Jung “No Time Is the Right Time” 3rd Place - Fred Kingwill “The Future—Robin’s Eggs” Honorable Mentions awarded to: Sana Shaw “Awakening of the Star” Richard Scruggs “El Camino Pilgrims” Robin Beckwith “Fragments of Imagined Spring” Liz Hill “Leopard Hat” Each of the first three winners draws the viewer into the center of the painting and beyond! Chris Bunger’s stunning copse of tall trees reaching for the sky and light draws us out of the current darkness of the world to a spiritual point of light and hope and life. Lynda Jung’s 1st place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” reflection on time stretches us to think of time past, present and future, within the clock-like piece she places organic and non-organic elements of life. Fred Kingwill’s small piece uses the circular, womb-like nature of the nest holding the promise of new life to strengthen our hope in the future. Ellen also found it interesting that each of these pieces effectively broke the traditional rule of not centering the focal point on the page. It is the quality of BEYONDNESS and HOPE IN THE FUTURE in each of the pieces that makes the break 2nd place - Lynda Jung “No Time Is the 3rd place - Fred Kingwell “The Future— successful! ABSTRACT An abstract of the thesis of Mary Ellen Scofield for the Master of Arts in English presented July 12, 1996. Title: Willa Cather's Spirituality Both overtly and subtly, the early twentieth century American author Willa Cather (1873-1947) gives her readers a sense of a spiritual realm in the world of her novels. '!'his study explores Cather's changing <;onceptions of spirituality and ways_in which she portrays them in three ~ her novels. I propose that though Cather is seldom considered a modernist, her interest in spirituality parallels Virginia Woolf's interest in moments of heightened consciousness, and that she invented ways to express ineffable connections with a spiritual dimension of life.

  • Music Review
6/14/2017 Rich text editor, grade_submission_feedback_comment, press ALT 0 for help. < I like this a lot, but it feels .. heavy. Even the lede sentence is soooo long. Is there a way you can lighten it up a little? Be careful about overdoing it. There are so few albums that are really ABOVE, you know? And we need a little old school in here because I don't know any of the references you make. The past year in popular music has fostered the explosion of Electronic Dance Music and a new generation of neonclad ravers in America, taking the music from its roots in the clubs and abandoned warehouses of inner cities and dropping it on festival stages big and bright enough to see from space. As tidal waves of young, talented artists, and veterans alike, fight for their share of the spotlight, RussianGerman producer Anton Zaslovski, better known as Zedd, has separated himself from the heard with his gutpunching electrohouse style and the genre’s most anticipated fulllength album release since it’s rise into the American mainstream, his debut record, Clarity. After sending OWSLA record label head honcho and dubstep king, Skrillex, a sample of his work in 2011, Zedd punched his ticket straight to the top of the game. Although Clarity is the artist’s first studio album, it’s seamless flow from track to track and heavy electro influences point to a musician wise beyond his years. Traditionally, EDM has been a genre dominated by single releases with many artists struggling to create cohesive fulllength albums that make any sort of lasting impression on listeners.

  • Leksykon Polskiej I Światowej Muzyki Elektronicznej
Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. Stockhausen (Elektronische Studie I, II-1951-1954), H.

  • Meet the Tempe Playlist Musicians
MEET THE TEMPE PLAYLIST MUSICIANS Adele Etheridge Woodson Song: Morena (Morena feat. Rosita) Visit Website Morena was part of my EP, Sunday in the Park, that was commissioned by the city of Tempe! I wanted to create a fun, catchy track with Portuguese elements to bring fresh variety to the EP! I am a freelance composer and violinist born and raised in Tempe. I feel all of my artistic success is because of the local community and artists I am surrounded by. I currently compose music for film, arrange strings for other bands, and produce. Alex King Song: Dialogue (Inner) Visit Spotify After a spiraling last year and a half I was just trying to be honest with myself about what happened and where I was going. The results were less clear than where they started. Maybe? Not sure… I grew up here. I love this city. Although all the other places I've traveled too and have lived hold dear places in my heart, Tempe will always be my true love! I play drums in a loud band around Tempe infrequently. Alyssa G Song: Let Go Visit Instagram I was in a long and draining relationship for years and when I decided to move on and break it off, I found myself in tears in my friend’s dorm, guitar in hand, and humming to a few chords. I decided to write, record, and complete the song to share with others, in hope that they could see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to hard breakups.

“Reviewing the Situation”: Oliver! and the Musical Afterlife of Dickens’s Novels Marc Napolitano A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by Advisor: Allan Life Reader: Laurie Langbauer Reader: Tom Reinert Reader: Beverly Taylor Reader: Tim Carter © 2009 Marc Napolitano ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Marc Napolitano: “Reviewing the Situation”: Oliver! and the Musical Afterlife of Dickens’s Novels (Under the direction of Allan Life) This project presents an analysis of various musical adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens. Transforming novels into musicals usually entails significant complications due to the divergent narrative techniques employed by novelists and composers or librettists. In spite of these difficulties, Dickens’s novels have continually been utilized as sources for stage and film musicals. This dissertation initially explores the elements of the author’s novels which render his works more suitable sources for musicalization than the texts of virtually any other canonical novelist. Subsequently, the project examines some of the larger and more complex issues associated with the adaptation of Dickens’s works into musicals, specifically, the question of preserving the overt Englishness of one of the most conspicuously British authors in literary history while simultaneously incorporating him into a genre that is closely connected with the techniques, talents, and tendencies of the American stage. A comprehensive overview of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! (1960), the most influential Dickensian musical of all time, serves to introduce the predominant theoretical concerns regarding the modification of Dickens’s texts for the musical stage and screen.
