RACE, REGION, AND REALISM IN THE POSTBELLUM FICTION OF ALBION TOURGÉE, CHARLES CHESNUTT, GEORGE WASHINGTON CABLE, AND MARK TWAIN by KATHERINE BROWN BARROW (Under the Direction of James Nagel) ABSTRACT In the literary movements of Regionalism and Realism that emerged in the wake of the Civil War, Albion Tourgée (1838-1905), Mark Twain (1835-1910), George Washington Cable (1844-1925), and Charles Chesnutt (1858-1932) contributed to the growing field of Southern fiction within these traditions. With varying degrees of verisimilitude, romance, and satire, all four of these authors placed issues of race and nationhood at the thematic center of their most influential novels. In many of their postbellum works of fiction, such as The Grandissimes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Pudd’nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins, A Fool’s Errand, Bricks without Straw, Mandy Oxendine, The Conjure Woman, The House Behind the Cedars, and The Marrow of Tradition, they explored the persisting racial problems of American life in the last quarter of the nineteenth-century and developed themes that suggested that the nation was still mired in the problems of its past. Perhaps the most significant aspect their postwar novels share is the manner in which they present African American protagonists who actively pursue a better life for themselves by challenging the white patriarchal order. Through various methods of empowerment, such as verbal trickery, escaping slavery, passing into white life, educational and economic advancement, as well as the subversive acts of protest, violence, and revenge, these characters refuse to submit to the social hierarchy to which they are bound by either custom or law. -

The most extensive investigation of this dramatic revaluation of cultural status was carried out by Lawrence D. Schwartz in his Cre- ating Faulkner’s Reputation: The Politics of Modern Literary Criticism.1 Schwartz examines in detail the cultural and political processes that led to Faulkner’s discovery in the 1940s after the primarily negative recep- tion of his works in the 1930s by leftist critics. -

Massey’s William Faulkner: “Man Working” 1919-1962: A Catalogue of the William Faulkner Collection of the University of Virginia (Charlottesville: Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia, 1968); and O. B. Emerson’s unpublished doctoral dissertation, “William Faulkner’s Literary Reputation in America” (Vanderbilt University, 1962). The present bibliography begins where Beebe’s latest checklist leaves off, but no precise termination date can be established since publica tion dates for periodicals vary widely, and it has seemed more useful to cover all possible material than to set an arbitrary cutoff date. -

During this period, New Orleans’ vendors labored in the streets of diverse neighborhoods where they did more than sell a vital commodity. As “Nourishing Networks” demonstrates, the food economy provided the disenfranchised—people of color, women, and recent migrants—a means to connect themselves to the public culture of the city, despite legal prohibitions intended to keep them on the margins. Those who were legally marginalized exercised considerable influence over the city’s public culture, shaping both economic and social interactions among urban residents in the public sphere. -

Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education “Where niggers crop on shares and live like animals” Racialized Space in William Faulkner´s Light in August and Go Down, Moses Martin Stray Egeberg Master’s thesis in English Literature May 2018 ENG-3992 Abstract This thesis sets out to explore the production of social space, with a particular focus on how these spaces are racialized, in two major works by William Faulkner, Light in August (1932) and Go Down, Moses (1942). By examining how different characters interact with various spaces appearing in the narratives, the thesis aims to illustrate how the racially segregated aspect of culture in Faulkner´s postbellum Mississippi plays a significant role in both individual and collective space production. Henri Lefebvre´s monumental work on the production of space has in this thesis served as an entryway into the discourse on social space. The thesis further considers insight gained from the concept of heterotopia, introduced by Michel Foucault. The thesis seeks to revitalize, and shed new light on, the discourse concerned with the intersection of space and race in Faulkner´s works, by considering and applying the more recent theory of Paul Outka on nature and race. To put these theorists in dialogue with Faulkner´s Light in August and Go Down, Moses enables an analysis of both the political and phenomenological aspect of space in Faulkner´s works. A division between interior and exterior spaces has been made for structural reasons, resulting in a total of four analytical chapters at the core of the thesis. Reviewed by Alecia P. Long (Louisiana State Museum) Published on H-Urban (January, 1999) As one might surmise from the main title, Christopher Benfey's ostensible subject inDegas in New Orleans is the painter Edgard Degas and the time he spent visiting the city and his relatives during his only American sojourn. From October of 1872 through March of 1873 Degas lived with and began paintings of many of his Louisiana relations. But one needs carefully to consider Benfey's subtitle, Encounters in the Creole World of Kate Chopin and George Washington Cable in order to have even an inkling of what Benfey, who teaches American literature at Mount Holyoke, is up to in this engaging, thought-provoking, but sometimes frustrating book. Benfey contends that the period of Degas' visit was also a "key moment in the cultural history of this most exotic of American cities "and notes that New Orleans subjects inspired Degas at the very same time Kate Chopin and George Washington Cable "were beginning to mine the resources of New Orleans" for their literary creations. Hamblin On a Saturday morning in March 1978, I drove down a hallway to a conference room where we took to Farmington, Missouri, a little more than an hour’s seats at a long table. Go down Moses is a spiritual proposition that describes the events in the Old Testament of the Bible, especially Exodus 8:1: And the LORD said to Moses, Go to Pharaoh and say to him, Thus says the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me, in which God commands Moses to demand the deliverance of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt. The opening verse that the Jubilee Singers published in 1872: When Israel was in the Egyptian land, let my people go so hard that they couldn't stand Let my people go: Go down, Moses Way down into Egypt's land Say to the old Pharaoh, let my people go The lyrics of the song stand for the liberation of the ancient Jewish people from Egyptian slavery. In an interpretation of the song, Israel depicts enslaved African-Americans, while Egypt and Pharaoh represent the slave master. [1] The descent into Egypt is derived from the Bible; the Old Testament recognizes the Nile Valley as lower than Jerusalem and the Promised Land; so it means going to Egypt to go down[2] while going away from Egypt is ascending. [3] In the context of American slavery, this old sense of down converged with the concept of down the river (the Mississippi), where the conditions of slaves were notoriously worse, a situation that led to the idiom selling someone down the river in today's English. -
