Do Some Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Skip Spawning?

Secor1 SUMMARY During the spawning season for Atlantic bluefin tuna, some adults occur outside known spawning centers, suggesting either unknown spawning regions, or fundamental errors in our current understanding of bluefin tuna reproductive schedules. Based upon recent scientific perspectives, skipped spawning (delayed maturation and non-annual spawning) is possibly prevalent in moderately long-lived marine species like bluefin tuna. In principle, skipped spawning represents a trade-off between current and future reproduction. By foregoing reproduction, an individual can incur survival and growth benefits that accrue in deferred reproduction. Across a range of species, skipped reproduction was positively correlated with longevity, but for non-sturgeon species, adults spawned at intervals at least once every two years. A range of types of skipped spawning (constant, younger, older, event skipping; and delays in first maturation) was modeled for the western Atlantic bluefin tuna population to test for their effects on the egg-production-per-recruit biological reference point (stipulated at 20% and 40%). With the exception of extreme delays in maturation, skipped spawning had relatively small effect in depressing fishing mortality (F) threshold values. This was particularly true in comparison to scenarios of a juvenile fishery (ages 4-7), which substantially depressed threshold F values. Indeed, recent F estimates for 1990-2002 western Atlantic bluefin tuna stock assessments were in excess of threshold F values when juvenile size classes were exploited. Morphometric and meristic characters of of fishes caught by trawl and various nets in Bandırma Bay in the years of 1998-1999 were examined and some morphological, ecological properties, and local names of 34 determined species are given. Key Words: Fish Species, Systematic, Bandırma Bay BANDIRMA KÖRFEZİ (MARMARA DENİZİ) BALIKLARI ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA ÖZET Bu araştırma Bandırma Körfezi (Marmara Denizi)’nde yaşayan balık türlerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. 1998-1999 yılları arasında körfez içinde trol ve çeşitli ağlar ile yakalanan balıkların morfometrik ve meristik karakterleri incelenmiş ve saptanan 34 türün bazı morfolojik, ekolojik özellikleri, ve yerel isimleri verilmiştir. INTRODUCTION Research on the sea fauna along the coasts of Turkey was initiated by foreign researchers at the begining of the 20th century and entered an intensive stage with Turkish researchers in the 1940s. However, the fish fauna of Turkish seas has still not been fully determined. Of these researchers, Tortonese (1) listed 300 species. Papaconstantinou and Tsimenids (2) listed 33 species. Papaconstantinou (3) listed the most of 447 species for Aegean Sea. Slastenenko (4) listed 200 species for Sea of Marmara and 189 species for Black Sea. Tortonese (1) reported 540 fish species in whole of Mediterranean. Demetropoulos and Neocleous (5) gave a list of fishes for Cyprus area. -

A. vari was recorded for the first time in Iraqi waters. Second dorsal fin rays ranged from 22 to 24 in A. djedaba, 25 to 26 in A. kleinii and 26 to 28 in A. vari. Anal fin rays were 19 - 20 in A. djedaba, 21 - 22 in A. kleinii and 20 - 22 in A.vari. Gill rakers on lower limb were 27 - 31 in A. djedaba, 27 – 29 in A. kleinii and 22 – 23 in A. vari. The DNA fingerprints of species of the genus Alepes were identified using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (PCR-RAPD) with six primers: P1 (212), P2 (239), P3 (244), P4 (250), P5 (265), and P6 (347).
