Al Jazeera and the Global Media Landscape Al Jazeera and the Global Media Landscape This book analyzes how and why Al Jazeera English (AJE) became the chan- nel of choice to understand the massive protests across the Arab world in 2011. Aiming to explain the ‘Al Jazeera moment,’ it tracks the channel’s bumpy road towards international recognition in a longitudinal, in-depth analysis of the channel’s editorial profi le and strategies. Studying AJE from its launch in mid-November 2006 to the ‘Arab Spring,’ it explains and problematizes the channel’s ambitious editorial agenda and strategies and examines the internal confl icts, practical challenges, and minor break- throughs in its formative years. The Al Jazeera phenomenon has received massive attention, but it remains under-researched. The growth of transnational satellite television has trans- formed the global media landscape into a complex web of multi-vocal, multimedia, and multidirectional fl ows. Based on a combination of policy-, production- and content-analysis of comprehensive empirical data, the book offers an innovative perspective on the theorization of global news contra- fl ows. By problematizing the distinctive characteristics of AJE, it examines the strategic motivation behind the channel and the ways in which its production processes and news profi le are meant to be different from its Anglo-American competitors. These questions underscore a central nexus of the book: the changing relationship between transnational satellite news and power. Oslo, June 2013 Tine Ustad Figenschou 1 Introduction The Al Jazeera Moment “Al Jazeera is not a tool of revolution. We do not create revolutions. How- ever, when something of that magnitude happens, we are at the center of the coverage,” said Wadah Khanfar, Al Jazeera Network’s Director General from 2003–11, in his TED talk from March 2011. Interviewed after the talk, he described the enormity and the importance of the Arab uprisings in almost poetic terms: Actually, this may be the biggest story that we have ever covered. We have covered many wars. We have covered a lot of tragedies, a lot of problems, a lot of conflict zones, a lot of hot spots in the region, because we were centered at the middle of it. But this is a story—it is a great story; it is beautiful. It is not something that you only cover because you have to cover a great incident. You are witnessing change in history. You are witnessing the birth of a new era. And this is what the story’s all about. (Khanfar, 2 March 2011) For the network’s English news channel, Al Jazeera English (AJE), the upris- ings represented a ‘perfect media storm’ as the channel capitalized on a set of comparative advantages making them the international news chan- nel to go to. This book analyzes how and why AJE became the channel of choice to understand the massive protests across the Arab world. Aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ‘Al Jazeera moment,’ it tracks the channel’s bumpy road towards international recognition in a lon- gitudinal, in-depth analysis of the channel’s editorial profi le and strategies. Studying AJE from its launch in mid-November 2006 to the ‘Arab Spring’ and beyond, it explains and problematizes the channel’s ambitious editorial agenda and strategies as well as examines the internal confl icts, practical challenges, and interim successes in its formative years. To understand the role of the new and old media during the Arab Spring, it is important to recognize the complex and contradictory characteristics of the wider Arab public sphere. The present chapter first maps recent localization trends in the global media landscape. Second, it discusses the strengths, weaknesses, and democratic potential of the Arab public sphere, 2 Al Jazeera and the Global Media Landscape with particular emphasis on satellite news channels, expectations of a ‘sat- ellite democracy,’ and popular participation and mobilization.

    STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY Department of Social Anthropology “The Voice of the Voiceless” News production and journalistic practice at Al Jazeera English Emma Nyrén i Master’s thesis Spring 2014 Supervisor: Paula Uimonen Abstract This thesis explores how the cultural and social media environments surrounding the journalism of Al Jazeera English are shaped by and shape the channel’s news practices. Al Jazeera English has been described as a contra-flow news organization in the global media landscape and this thesis discusses the different reasons why the channel is described in this way by looking at its origins, aims, characteristics and ideals. Based on interviews with Al Jazeera English journalists, news observations and two field observations in London, I argue that Al Jazeera English brings cultural and social sensitivity to its news reports by engaging with multiple in-depth perspectives, using local reporters and integrating citizen generated material. The channel’s early adoption of online technologies and citizen journalism also contributes to a more democratic news direction and gives the channel a wider spectrum of opinions and perspectives to choose between. By applying a comparative analysis built on similar studies within anthropology of news journalism differences and similarities within the journalistic practices can be detected, comparing Al Jazeera English’s journalism with journalism at other places and news organizations. These comparisons and discussions enables new understandings for how news is produced and negotiated within the global media landscape, and this gives the global citizen an improved comprehension of why the news, which shapes our appreciation of the world, looks like it does.

    War in Afghanistan (2001–present) 1 War in Afghanistan (2001–present) The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001,[1] as the armed forces of the United States and the United Kingdom, and the Afghan United Front (Northern Alliance), launched Operation Enduring Freedom in response to the September 11 attacks on the United States, with the stated goal of dismantling the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization and ending its use of Afghanistan as a base. The United States also said that it would remove the Taliban regime from power and create a viable democratic state. The preludes to the war were the assassination of anti-Taliban leader Ahmad Shah Massoud on September 9, 2001, and the September 11 attacks on the United States, in which nearly 3000 civilians lost their lives in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, The United States identified members of al-Qaeda, an organization based in, operating out of and allied with the Taliban's Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as the perpetrators of the attacks.     Al Jazeera’s Expansion: News Media Moments and Growth in Australia PhD thesis by publication, 2017 Scott Bridges Institute of Governance and Policy Analysis University of Canberra ABSTRACT Al Jazeera was launched in 1996 by the government of Qatar as a small terrestrial news channel. In 2016 it is a global media company broadcasting news, sport and entertainment around the world in multiple languages. Devised as an outward- looking news organisation by the small nation’s then new emir, Al Jazeera was, and is, a key part of a larger soft diplomatic and brand-building project — through Al Jazeera, Qatar projects a liberal face to the world and exerts influence in regional and global affairs. Expansion is central to Al Jazeera’s mission as its soft diplomatic goals are only achieved through its audience being put to work on behalf of the state benefactor, much as a commercial broadcaster’s profit is achieved through its audience being put to work on behalf of advertisers. This thesis focuses on Al Jazeera English’s non-conventional expansion into the Australian market, helped along as it was by the channel’s turning point coverage of the 2011 Egyptian protests. This so-called “moment” attracted critical and popular acclaim for the network, especially in markets where there was still widespread suspicion about the Arab network, and it coincided with Al Jazeera’s signing of reciprocal broadcast agreements with the Australian public broadcasters. Through these deals, Al Jazeera has experienced the most success with building a broadcast audience in Australia. After unpacking Al Jazeera English’s Egyptian Revolution “moment”, and problematising the concept, this thesis seeks to formulate a theoretical framework for a news media turning point.
