Watson: But I got hung up in a different way. Just as I was getting in my car, my trousers got caught on a piece of broken metal at the back of the car. Professor Sadler ran into it yesterday – and ripped my trouser leg right down so I had to rush back and change my pants. Hopkins: I'm sorry for the cause, but I'm kind of glad you were delayed. This was an interesting telephone conversation. It was with a fellow named Gordon who is the head of the company that made the silver bowl and he just wanted some assurance it was all right and so forth. He's a very, very attractive fellow, but I have just barely met him though. I donʼt know him well at all. Childs: It looked like a beautiful bowl. I trust it's as beautiful as it looked there. Is it? It's a perfect reproduction, isnʼt it? Hopkins: Just a perfect reproduction. It is very beautiful, very beautiful. Childs: I told you ahead of time I wasn't going to get to your dinner. But I did. I was so glad… so thrilled by it. It was wonderful. -
The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography. -

Eastman and his wife, Elaine Goodale Eastman, right, left the Lakota reservation in South Dakota and relocated to St. Paul in 1893, they chose a place where Charles had deep ancestral roots as can be seen in this excerpt from Joseph Nicollet’s 1843 map of the Hydrographic Basin of the Upper Mississippi. Nicollet labelled the area where the Mississippi River meets the Minnesota River MDEWAKANTON COUNTRY. It is also known to Dakota as Bdote, the place “where two waters come together.” Barely discernible on the map are the locations of Fort Snelling, St. Anthony Falls, the lakes of Minneapolis, and Carver’s Cave, sites that today are in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Cunningham (eds) DOI: 10.2752/9781847882837/TCAF0007 Pages: 33–56 Editors’ Introduction: When the Gilded Age ended on the eve of the First World War, some Americans expressed dissatisfaction with Berg Fashion Library the conventional life. Intellectuals in Greenwich Village in New York City began to practice alternative lifestyles based on radical feminism and new psychological thought. As discussed by Deborah Saville, their style, identifiable as American bohemian, signified their ideological leanings. Young Greenwich Village women’s style included artists’ smocks, peasant blouses, sandals and bobbed hair. While most women did not yet customarily wear these avant garde styles, the emerging mainstream look of the period did have a shorter skirt and looser silhouette. The bohemians’ artistic tendencies may be related to designers and artists within modern design movements who presented new, uncorseted garments at exhibitions throughout Europe. Liberty of London and designers such as Paul Poiret and Mariano Fortuny became well-known creators of comfortable, exotic gowns. These efforts created a trend for more comfortable, if not exotic, clothing. Therefore it is not surprising to learn that clothing manufacturers soon adapted village styles and offered them to the American public. Saville argues that these Greenwich Village bohemians were precursors to the free-living flappers who appeared all over America in the 1920s. -
Medway in 1713 Included the Land We Presently Know As Millis and Medway
COMMUNITY CHURCH HISTORY The incorporation of Medway in 1713 included the land we presently know as Millis and Medway. The two sections are often re- ferred to as the East Precinct (Millis), and the West Precinct (Medway). The Black Swamp, a massive area of dense forests and swamps, was the geographical center between both precincts. The First Church of Christ in Medway was established in the more populous area east of the Black Swamp. In colonial days, attendance at church services was an obligation. Services were lengthy, involving both morning and afternoon sessions, with a short intermission to eat, warm up if it was cold, and socialize in the adja- cent “noon houses.” Weather was always an issue, but winter was especially difficult due to the cold and lack of heat in the meet- ing house. As the population of Medway grew, settlers began building in the West Precinct. Increasingly, as early as 1731, they began to ex- plore alternatives to attending church services and town meetings at such a distance. The Black Swamp was a major obstacle to these settlers and their families, who travelled by foot, wagon, or horseback to attend services in the east. It was difficult, inconve- nient, and nearly impossible to travel several miles from home, over rutted pathways, across the often flooded swampy area, to -ar rive at the meeting house in time to hear the bell ringing, calling all to worship. Several proposals were made to make it easier for the West Precinct settlers to attend worship services. After failing to find a work- able solution, the settlers petitioned the General Court in 1748 for permission to separate from the East Precinct and to build their own meeting house. -

[Pause] Hopkins: Well, sometime around the 4th. I don't know exactly when. I want to go somewhere before commencement. [Laughter] I don't know just where. Lathem: I can understand that. Did you get over to Montpelier? Hopkins: Yes, I was there yesterday. Lathem: Ah. Howʼs Mr. Davis? Hopkins: Heʼs fine. Honors coming thick and fast. Heʼs written… Named insurance man of the year by the insurance companies and he has just been made, I donʼt know whether an officer or not, but a member of the Vermont Bankers Association. [Laughter] Lathem: My goodness. They are coming thick and fast. Hopkins: Yeah. It just caught my eye. [inaudible] good for the United States. I want to know where I got that idea. [Laughter] Lathem: Is this going to work out all right? Can you see the clippings well enough at that angle? Hopkins: Yes, I can see fine, thank you. For Immediate Release April 4, 2014 GROUNDBREAKERS Celebrates Great American Gardens in the Early 20th Century and The Extraordinary Women Who Designed Them May 17–September 7, 2014 Between 1900 and 1930, landscape design achieved a new prominence in American life as estate owners created lavish flower gardens and cities landscaped public spaces. The New York Botanical Garden’s exhibition Groundbreakers: Great American Gardens and The Women Who Designed Them explores this burgeoning age of gardening and the contributions of American women who emerged as influential professionals in the fields of landscape architecture and design, garden photography, and garden writing in the early 20th century. The date is March 28, the time is 2 P.M. Hopkins: Well, Iʼll be very glad. I regret more and more that I wasnʼt a diary keeper. All sorts of personal things come up that I canʼt identify within five or ten years. Lathem: Yes…Yes… I wonder if you…before we get into this if youʼve thought of anything that you particularly want to put on the record. We were talking the other afternoon when we met on the street about one matter that I think very appropriately should get in. Hopkins: Yeah. I think I can…I would like to put in very much indeed the…I think the basis of one of my strong convictions in regard to college administration came to me not from any academic life at all but from my experience with the Western Electric Company where, when I went out there, I found that somewhere between thirty and forty thousand–nearer forty thousand, I think—employees going out at night were met at every entrance by soap-box orators: pretty specious and pretty fallacious in many cases. And yet, this training group that I was in charge of who were all college graduates, were very much impressed by these people.
