Introduction: Ekphrasis, Narration, and Description 1.1 The ‘Problem’ of Ekphrasis: To Narrate or to Describe? In book 18 of the Iliad, Hephaestus forges a new shield for Achilles, which is elaborately decorated. One of the decorations concerns a herd of oxen (18.573-83): Ἐν δ’ ἀγέλην ποίησε βοῶν ὀρθοκραιράων· αἳ δὲ βόες χρυσοῖο τετεύχατο κασσιτέρου τε, 575 μυκηθμῷ δ’ ἀπὸ κόπρου ἐπεσσεύοντο νομόνδε πὰρ ποταμὸν κελάδοντα, παρὰ ῥοδανὸν δονακῆα. χρύσειοι δὲ νομῆες ἅμ’ ἐστιχόωντο βόεσσι τέσσαρες, ἐννέα δέ σφι κύνες πόδας ἀργοὶ ἕποντο. σμερδαλέω δὲ λέοντε δύ’ ἐν πρώτῃσι βόεσσι 580 ταῦρον ἐρύγμηλον ἐχέτην· ὃ δὲ μακρὰ μεμυκὼς ἕλκετο· τὸν δὲ κύνες μετεκίαθον ἠδ’ αἰζηοί. τὼ μὲν ἀναρρήξαντε βοὸς μεγάλοιο βοείην ἔγκατα καὶ μέλαν αἷμα λαφύσσετον (…). On it he made a herd of straight-horned cattle. And they, the cattle, had been made of gold and tin, (575) and with lowing they were hurrying from the farmyard to the pasture beside the sounding river, beside the waving reed. Golden herdsmen were marching with the cattle, four in number, and nine swift-footed dogs were following them. Two fearsome lions among the foremost cattle (580) were grasping a loud- lowing bull: and he [the bull], bellowing mightily, was being dragged away; and the dogs and young men followed after him.

    CENTAURS IN GREEK VASE-PAINTING. 107 ON REPRESENTATIONS OF CENTAURS IN GREEK VASE-PAINTING. BEFORE coming to the discussion of the three unpublished vase-paintings which illustrate this article, and of the questions which they suggest (Plates I., II., III.), it will be proper to give some account of the Centaurs in general, as figured on the painted vases of the Greeks.1 The passages or episodes of the Centaur myth habitually illustrated in this form of art are five in number, viz.:— 1. The battle of the Centaurs and Lapiihae at the wedding feast of Peirithoos and Hippodarneia, or Deidameia, on Mount Pelion ; when the Centaurs, being present as guests, maddened them- selves with wine, and one of them seized the bride; whereupon a general conflict ensued, ending in the rout of the monsters and their expulsion from Thessaly. This battle is said by Aelian2 to have been made the subject of a separate poem by an early epic writer, Melisandros of Miletus ; but neither of Melisandros nor his work have we any other record. Based on this idea, I propose a disharmoni- cally headed reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) clausal syntax; specif- ically, I argue that PIE was left-headed in the CP domain and right-headed in the TP domain, and provide additional evidence that PIE was right-headed within VP as well. The novelty of my approach compared to those of my pre- decessors is looking at the various auxiliary constructions innovated across the Indo-European (IE) daughter languages instead of focusing exclusively on re- constructible lexical verbs. This approach allows me to more accurately triangu- late the location of inflection in the syntax relative to the lower verbal domain, which gives me more accurate information about the featural makeup of the functional heads of these languages and improves my resulting reconstruction. I have given : the atove title to this article, not because I propose- to confine myself to the individuals or families for whom the name of' Shepherd Kings has-been reserved, but because the Asshurites, whose history I intend to trace; include the Hyksos and the ancient stocks with which they are most closely connected. In my last paper on "the Horites" I directed = attention to a Shethite line, which appeared in the annals of Egypt, Arabia and India as inimical to the descendants of- Seir. This line I there stated to be that of Assh^r, the father of Tekoa. Further researches in connection with the family of Asshur have led me to the discovery of certain errors of identification of which I was guilty in the article on the Horites; and notably that of the Persian Gilshah with Alvan, the son of' Shobal.
