COPYRIGHT: NIGERIAN ASSOCIATION OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMISTS Editorial Note

The contents of the published papers in this journal are very fundamental to policy makers, academics and for a successful agricultural transformation agenda for any countries in the world. As part of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s effort to revamp the agriculture sector, ensure food security, diversify the economy and enhance foreign exchange earnings, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development embarked on a transformation agenda with a focus on the development of agricultural value chains, including the provision and availability of improved inputs (seeds and fertilizer), increased productivity and production, as well as the establishment of staple crop processing zones. It also addresses reduction in post- harvest losses, improvement of linkages with industries with respect to backward integration, as well as access to financial services and markets. The transformation has the vision of using strategies that ensure a hunger-free Nigeria through an agricultural sector that drives income growth, generates employment and transforms Nigeria into a leading player in global food markets to grow wealth for millions of farmers.

NAAE therefore, identify with this laudable goal of the Federal Government of Nigeria by engaging in rigorous academic discussions at national conferences as a way of generating policies that will improve sustainability of government achievements of the sustainability process. Therefore, the selected papers for this issue, volume 4 number 1 of the Nigerian Journal of Agricultural Economics (NJAE) emanated from the 2012 annual conference of the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE) themed “Agriculture in the National Transformation Agenda: The Policy Mix” held at the University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, between September 25 and 27, 2012. Following from this, the LOC submitted selected papers for publication in this edition of the journal. It is noteworthy that all the manuscripts sent were subjected to double-blind peer review before publishing the refereed manuscripts found publishable and which were corrected by authors concerned within the stipulated time.

NAAE would not rest on her oars towards providing the academic and professional leadership that builds human capital to stimulate agricultural and industrial development and ultimately, the economic development of our great nation.
