The Scottish Highlanders. “The Highlands of Scotland,” said that grand specimen of the Celto-Scandinavian race, the late Dr. Norman Macleod, “ like many greater things in the world, may be said to be well known, and yet unknown.”1 The Highlands indeed is a peculiar country, and the Highlanders, like the ancient Jews, a peculiar people; and like the Jews also in certain quarters a despised people, though we owe our religion to the Hebrews, and not the least part of our national glory arid European prestige to the Celts of the Scottish Highlands. This ignorance and misprision arose from several causes; primarily, and at first principally, from the remoteness of the situation in days when distances were not counted by steam, and when the country, now perhaps the most accessible of any mountainous district in Europe, was, like most parts of modern Greece, traversed only by rough pony-paths over the protruding bare bones of the mountain. In Dr. Johnson’s day, to have penetrated the Argyllshire Highlands as far west as the sacred settlement of St. Columba was accounted a notable adventure scarcely less worthy of record than the perilous passage of our great Scottish traveller Bruce from the Red Sea through the great Nubian Desert to the Nile; and the account of his visit to those unknown regions remains to this day a monument of his sturdy Saxon energy, likely to be read with increasing interest by a great army of summer perambulators long after his famous dictionary shall have been forgotten, or relegated as a curiosity to the back shelves of a philological library.

    HISTORY Osler and his Australian associations — part 2: continuing influence Milton G Roxanas “I would like an arrangement made with publishing houses in India and Australia to issue special editions of my text-book in those countries … I have so many friends in both places, many of them men in official and teaching positions that the book would be adopted in the schools — as indeed it has been at Sydney …” he first part of this article (page 686) examined the life and 2 Piero Francis Bruno Fiaschi (1879–1948) medical influences of William Osler (Box 1) in the context of his Australian connections. This second part looks at his Fiaschi was born in Windsor, New South Wales, second son of Thomas T Fiaschi, a medical graduate from Florence, Italy. He graduated in encounters with Australians in the final years of his life, and the influence and legacy he left on Australian practitioners and dentistry from the New York College of Dentistry in 1903 and then in medicine from Columbia University in New York in 1905. He worked medical practice after his death. with Harvey Cushing in Baltimore and met him again in Abbeville, In 1918, the Oslers were still grieving the loss of their son France, during World War I. He served in the Australian Army Medical Revere in the war the previous year.     Supported by Message from Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO ‘A Grand Obsession: The DS Mitchell Story’ Exhibition Mitchell Library Centenary Celebration I want to record my profound appreciation to David Scott Mitchell for his bequest to the State Library of New South Wales 100 years ago, of a priceless collection of 40,000 books, manuscripts, maps and pictures, as well as an endowment of £70,000. The importance of the DS Mitchell Bequest to our state, to our nation, and even beyond, is incalculable. The documents initially comprising the bequest, together with historical acquisitions subsequently acquired through his generosity, have provided a glorious legacy of the Australian spirit and identity. I have always said that, if ordered in the most catastrophic of times imaginable, in fantasy, to save just one man-made structure in Australia from destruction, I would immediately nominate the Mitchell Library with all its contents. There are no words which could adequately record our indebtedness and gratitude for this priceless gift. He accumulated the world’s pre-eminent collection of books, manuscripts, maps and pictures relating to Australia and the Pacific. On his death in July 1907, his collection was bequeathed to the Public (now State) Library of New South Wales, together with an endowment of £70,000 to fund additions to his collection. The conditions of the bequest were that his collection should be housed separately and known as the Mitchell Library and should be freely available on conditions similar to those in force in the British Museum library, now the British Library.

Incorrect ribbon, some small scratches behind neck, otherwise good very fi ne, only seven of this clasp awarded. $2,800 Together with research. This clasp was awarded for cutting out the French corvette Chevrette in Camaret Bay, a small bay on the north coast of Brittany near the French port of Brest. 3190* New Zealand Cross 1869, an offi cial replica by P&F Ltd in 18ct gold and sterling silver, with brooch bar, reverse centre marked, 'Replica 49', being a limited edition made offi cially in the 1980s from original dies.
