Julian Hirsch 2 Acknowledgements In some ways the groundwork for my thesis and work on the ONESC Initiative began more than five years ago in a kitchen in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. I was meeting Dr. Elizabeth Bloch Smith for the first time and could scarcely have imagined that our meeting would lead to my participation in an archaeological excavation in Israel that summer. After my first excavation, I was hooked. The spring before I came to Oberlin was filled with weekly meetings, readings, and discussions with Liz. I learned so much in that time and appreciate her continued guidance and support. If Liz was responsible for exposing me to just how fascinating the archaeology of the southern Levant was, Dr. Jeffrey Blakely was the person who helped me find the path where I could follow my passion at Oberlin. I still have my notes from the first day of the January 2017 Winter Term. I was amazed by everything Jeff knew about the history of biblical archaeology at the college and the history of the collection. If anything inspired me throughout my work, it was hearing vivid stories from Jeff about sitting in Harry Thomas Frank’s classroom learning about archaeology. Jeff has truly been my partner at every step of the way. I’ve consulted him for advice numerous times. Jeff kindly provided invaluable suggestions that only a true veteran of the field could offer. To give credit to Jeff in two more areas, Jeff certainly inspired my interest in the history of biblical archaeology and during the Winter Term in 2017 assigned me to work on the Bab edh-Dhra’ collection of Early Bronze Age tomb pots. -

Arab Israeli Teachers Working in Jewish Schools and Jewish Teachers Working in Arab Israeli Schools Nachum Blass1 Background In Israel, there is a separation between the Jewish education system and the Arab Israeli education system. The decision for this separation has both practical and ideological explanations. There are those who claim that the demographic realities dictate this separation. However it is revealing that the policy since the founding of the state was to strengthen and preserve the Jewish identity amongst the Jewish sector, and a coming to terms with the national identity of the Arab Israeli pupils. The ideological component is the more important of the two; this is evidenced by the fact that even in places where it would be possible to establish a combined education system, like in mixed cities (Tel Aviv-Yaffo, Haifa, Jerusalem, Acco, Lod, and Ramla), there is a complete separation between the two systems. This separation exists in every part of the education system although it is the most severe in the State-religious and Haredi education. There it is backed by instructions at the highest level that “advise” in no uncertain terms against the hiring of Arab Israeli teachers. This reality has many implications both on the educational level and on the overall societal level. On the educational level, it intensifies the fluctuations in supply and demand for teachers due to the limitations it creates in moving from sector to sector. Why this Pilgrimage to the Holy Land? But to go on a pilgrimage in the Holy Land means setting off and turning the physical journey into a “path of the soul”. Walking on this land with the heart, soul and mind for an encounter: of conversion, of devotion, of listening, with the Eucharist, and with Christ in brothers. John Paul II expressed this in very moving words: “How many memories and images and how much passion and great mystery surround the word Jerusalem! For us as Christians, it represents the geographical point of union between God and men, between eternity and history.” Our Journey… October 19, 2021, Tuesday: USA – Tel Aviv, Israel Depart our home city to Tel Aviv. (In-flight meals) October 20, Wednesday: Arrival to Holy Land and Nahsholim Seaside Resort Arrive in the Holy Land and transfer through the Plain of Sharon and the western coastal cities of Israel to the site of the ancient port city of Dor where the Nahsholim Seaside Resort is located at Kibbutz Nahsholim. After dinner and a brief information meeting, we retire to our cabins on the resort’s private Mediterranean beach. (Nahsholim Seaside Resort; D) October 21, Thursday: Nahsholim (Dor) – Nazareth After breakfast we travel south to Caesarea Maritina archaeological site. Caesarea, a historic seaport and home to the summer palace of Herod the Great built in 22 BC and later home to Pontius Pilate. We continue along the coastal plain to Haifa and up Mount Carmel to the Cave of Elijah below the Stelle Maris Monastery or the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a 19th-century Discalced Carmelite monastery. -

23 A Note towards Quantifying the Medieval Nubian Diaspora Adam Simmons Throughout the Christian medieval period of the kingdoms of Nu- bia (c. sixth–fifteenth centuries), ideas, goods, and peoples traversed vast distances. Judging from primarily external sources, the Nubian diaspora has seldom been thought of as vast, whether in number or geographical scope, both in terms of the relocated and a non- permanently domiciled diaspora. Prior to the Christianisation of the kingdoms of Nobadia, Makuria, and Alwa in the sixth century, likely Nubian delegations, consisting of “Ethiopes,” were received in both Rome and Constantinople alongside ones from neighbouring peoples, such as the Blemmyes and Aksumites. Yet, medieval Nubia is more often seen as inclusive rather than diasporic. This brief dis- cussion will further show that Nubians were an interactive society within the wider Mediterranean, a topic most commonly seen in the debate on Nubian trade.1 Above all, it argues that Nubians had a long relationship with Mediterranean societies that has primarily been overlooked in scholarship. Whilst the evidence presented here is not aimed to be definitive, it does highlight that Nubia’s Mediterranean connections may even have been more diverse than what Giovan- ni Ruffini argued for in his book Medieval Nubia whilst describing Nubia as a “Mediterranean society in Africa.”2 May we even argue for a more developed thesis of interaction? What about the Nubian societies throughout the Mediterranean who interacted with other communities both spiritually and financially? It will be argued here that these questions should be revisited and have potential to fur- ther expand Ruffini’s Mediterranean thesis. -

Barrett Professor Emerita Marianne Kalinke ii ABSTRACT “Apostolic Discourse and Christian Identity in Anglo-Saxon Literature” argues that Anglo-Saxon religious writers used traditions about the apostles to inspire and interpret their peoples’ own missionary ambitions abroad, to represent England itself as a center of religious authority, and to articulate a particular conception of inspired authorship. This study traces the formation and adaptation of apostolic discourse (a shared but evolving language based on biblical and literary models) through a series of Latin and vernacular works including the letters of Boniface, the early vitae of the Anglo- Saxon missionary saints, the Old English poetry of Cynewulf, and the anonymous poem Andreas. This study demonstrates how Anglo-Saxon authors appropriated the experiences and the authority of the apostles to fashion Christian identities for members of the emerging English church in the seventh and eighth centuries, and for vernacular religious poets and their readers in the later Anglo-Saxon period. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to many people for their help and support throughout the duration of this dissertation project. -

Palm Sunday All Saints, East Lansing April 5, 2020 (during covid-19 pandemic) + In the 5th century, a pilgrim named Egeria traveled from Spain to what is now Istanbul, and on to Jerusalem. She was probably a nun from a wealthy family or perhaps the patron of a convent in Spain and she wrote back to her sisters a long narrative about all her travels to the holy sites mentioned in the Bible and preserved as places of prayer. One of the most fascinating sections of her travel log is about her experiences in Jerusalem during Holy Week. the things that we traditionally do in this week are practices that Christians have observed for more than fifteen hundred years. They are customs that Egeria knew from her convent in Spain and then saw lived out again in Jerusalem. She marvels at the similarity between the traditions that she knew in Spain and those that are kept in Jerusalem. She writes that on the Sunday that begins Holy Week, …The passage from the Gospel is read, where the children, carrying branches and palms, met the Lord, saying; ‘Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord,’ and the bishop immediately rises, and all the people with him, and they all go on foot from the top of the Mount of Olives, all the people going before him with hymns and antiphons, answering one to another: “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.’ 1 And all the children in the neighborhood, even those who are too young to walk, are carried by their parents on their shoulders, all of them carrying branches, some of palms and some of olives, and so the bishop is escorted in the same manner as the Lord was of old. -

Journal of the American Academy of Religion LXIV/1 AAR Landscape as Cartography in Early Christian Pilgrimage Narratives* Blake Leyerle v_>OMPARED TO OTHER ancient travel literature, early accounts of Christian pilgrimage are strikingly spare. Our first record comes to us from an anonymous traveler in the early fourth century but here the land and its inhabitants, both presumably so exotic, remain as faceless as the traveler. Towards the end of the same century Egerias account shows a greater expansiveness on these matters but still has intriguing silences; while fulsome in expressing pleasure m what she sees, her enthusiasm stops short of any literary depiction of these sights. Jeromes letters, writ ten at about the same time, describing the land of Palestine as well as the holy travels of his friend Paula, do direct our attention to the landscape but in a highly stylized way For Jerome, scenery speaks of religious rather than geological formation. By the end of the sixth century, how ever, when another anonymous pilgrim traveled to the Holy Land, local fauna, flora, and even matters of ethnography are all of exuberant interest. Why is this? While this question may seem too impressionistic, too insignificant— or perhaps even too obvious—to ask, doing so brings real rewards. The two decades of his rule marked the extension of Latin conquests in the east, most notably by the conquest of the important coastal cities of Arsulf, Acre, Caesarea, Beirut and Sidon. These vital ports for the early Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem provided outlets to the sea for commerce, as well as safe harbors for incoming assistance from the west.
