Debunking Gasland, Part II Steve Team Lead Three years after the release of Gasland – a film panned by independent observers as “fundamentally dishonest” and a “polemic” – the main challenge for director Josh Fox in releasing Gasland Part II was manifest: Regain the public’s trust by discarding hyperbole and laying out the challenges and opportunities of shale development as they actually exist in the actual world. In short, do everything a documentary filmmaker should do, but which he chose not to do in Gasland. Unfortunately for those who attended the premiere of Gasland Part II this past weekend (we were there), Josh eschewed that path entirely, doubling down on the same old, tired talking points, and playing to his narrow base at the exclusion of all others. The Parker County case? It’s in there. Dimock? Probably receives more focus than anything else. Pavillion and EPA? You bet. And yes, that damned banjo of his makes an appearance or two as well. This isn’t Gasland Part II, folks. It’s Gasland Too. Sure, the sequel has some new cast members and a few new claims. Somehow, Fox discovers that shale is actually worse than he previously thought: Earthquakes. Methane leaks. Well failures. Hurricanes. Heck, viewers were probably waiting for swarms of locusts to appear – fracking locusts, to be sure. And there was plenty of spectacle, too. Yoko Ono was in the audience. So was former Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), the congressman who lent his name to the infamous “FRAC Act” that Josh so desperately wants to become law. -

While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary. -

Perspective Shifts Interviewer So today is May the third— Sebastian Junger Yeah. Interviewer 2011.  We’re in the studios of West Point Center for Oral History with Sebastian Junger.  And Sebastian, I would like to ask you—you know, there’s a lot of material we can go into, but since we’re here at West Point I’d like to focus on your most recent work, and ask you to tell me when you first got interested in war. Sebastian Junger I mean, I just have the assumption that every little boy is interested in war.  I remember growing up, you know, and all the adults that I knew had fought in World War II.  And when we played war, some of the boys had to play Germans, and no one wanted to play Germans, and everyone wanted to be Americans.  And the Vietnam War was going on, and so it started deploying with that.  But you know, like I—since I was a little boy, I mean it’s just—it’s exciting to pick up a crooked stick and pretend to shoot it at somebody.  I mean it says terrible things about the human species, I suppose, but that’s what little boys do—or a lot of them. Sebastian Junger And—but then after Vietnam, the Vietnam War was so controversial, and I—you know, I came from a part of society—Massachusetts, pretty liberal background—that was very, very against the war.  And the whole enterprise and the military and everything, I was just—found really unpleasant and distasteful, and that started to change after I started covering wars myself. -

June 27, 2014 12:44 pm Portrait of an artist: Robert De Niro Sr By Liz Jobey Robert De Niro does not star in his latest film but he did make and narrate it – a documentary about his artist father, whose work remains little known despite great early success Robert De Niro and his father, New York, c 1983 There are two entries for Robert De Niro in the online collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. One is for Taxi Driver, the film directed by Martin Scorsese, for which De Niro was nominated for an Oscar as best actor in 1976; the other is for Raging Bull, also directed by Scorsese and for which De Niro won the award for best actor in 1980. At the Metropolitan Museum, however, the name Robert De Niro tells a different story. Four entries are listed – two drawings in crayon from 1976, a charcoal drawing from 1941 and a self-portrait in oil dated 1951. These are works by Robert De Niro Sr, the actor’s father, a relatively unknown American painter, who died in 1993. He had early success in the 1940s and 1950s, part of a group that included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline, the core of American Abstract Expressionism, and his portrait came to the museum in 2006, part of the bequest of Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman, a leading collector. The image is not on view but is accompanied by the following caption: The critic Clement Greenberg pronounced De Niro “an important young abstract painter” upon seeing his 1946 show at Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery, Art of This Century. -

www.influencefilmforum.com Gasland Discussion Guide Director: Josh Fox Year: 2010 Time: 107 min You might know this director from: Gasland Part II (2013) The Sky Is Pink (2012) FILM SUMMARY GASLAND is an unflinching investigation into the relatively new, yet highly controversial drilling practice known as “fracking” which is used to extract natural gas from the ground. This road movie follows filmmaker Josh Fox who was offered $100,000 for the natural gas drilling rights to his property on the border of New York and Pennsylvania but turned it down. Instead, he set off on a cross-country journey to see for himself the startling environmental and health risks faced by those who have agreed to sell the drilling rights on their land to the gas industry. In one highly memorable scene, a man who recently allowed fracking on his land is standing in his kitchen. As he lights a match under the running faucet, the water bursts into flames. This crazy occurrence is presumably the result of fracking. Fox also shines a light on the power of big business over government policy in the U.S. by looking at the agenda of former Vice-President Dick Cheney. In 2005, Cheney’s Energy Task Force pushed through a provision to the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act that exempted corporations like Halliburton (where Cheney was once CEO) from revealing the chemicals used in fracking. This led to the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history.
