Robert De Niro Sr
June 27, 2014 12:44 pm Portrait of an artist: Robert De Niro Sr By Liz Jobey Robert De Niro does not star in his latest film but he did make and narrate it – a documentary about his artist father, whose work remains little known despite great early success Robert De Niro and his father, New York, c 1983 There are two entries for Robert De Niro in the online collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. One is for Taxi Driver, the film directed by Martin Scorsese, for which De Niro was nominated for an Oscar as best actor in 1976; the other is for Raging Bull, also directed by Scorsese and for which De Niro won the award for best actor in 1980. At the Metropolitan Museum, however, the name Robert De Niro tells a different story. Four entries are listed – two drawings in crayon from 1976, a charcoal drawing from 1941 and a self-portrait in oil dated 1951. These are works by Robert De Niro Sr, the actor’s father, a relatively unknown American painter, who died in 1993. He had early success in the 1940s and 1950s, part of a group that included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline, the core of American Abstract Expressionism, and his portrait came to the museum in 2006, part of the bequest of Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman, a leading collector. The image is not on view but is accompanied by the following caption: The critic Clement Greenberg pronounced De Niro “an important young abstract painter” upon seeing his 1946 show at Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery, Art of This Century. -

Painterly Representation in New York: 1945-1975
PAINTERLY REPRESENTATION IN NEW YORK, 1945-1975 by JENNIFER SACHS SAMET A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty in Art History in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, The City University of New York 2010 © 2010 JENNIFER SACHS SAMET All Rights Reserved ii This manuscript has been read and accepted for the Graduate Faculty in Art History in satisfaction of the dissertation requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. This dissertation is the first survey of a group of painters working in this mode, all born around the 1920s and living in New York. Several, though not all, were students of Hans Hofmann; most knew one another; some were close friends or colleagues as art teachers. I highlight nine artists: Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003), Leland Bell (1922-1991), Nell Blaine (1922-1996), Robert De Niro (1922-1993), Paul Georges (1923-2002), Albert Kresch (b. 1922), Mercedes Matter (1913-2001), Louisa Matthiasdottir (1917-2000), and Paul Resika (b. 1928). This group of artists has been marginalized in standard art historical surveys and accounts of the period. -

This includes the failure to include accurate and complete information regarding the historic significance of the projected development sites at 88 East 10th Street and 11 & 13 East 12th Street along with other historic resources in the area, as well as other significant inaccurate data and analysis. As this ULURP moves through the public review process and development pressure increases in this area from the recent Tech Hub upzoning and construction, it is critical that city agencies accurately analyze the potential impact of new construction and identify the considerable historic resources in the area, which is unfortunately largely absent from this document. 88 East 10th Street The EAS identifies 88 East 10th Street as a potential development site which has “no architectural significance.” We disagree with that assessment of this largely intact 1844 Greek Revival house. -

This 1908 Renaissance Revival-style office building at 80 Fifth Avenue was the home of the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) from 1909 until its dissolution in 1917. MPCC and 80 Fifth Avenue are a critical part of the incredibly important early history of the film industry to be found in the area south of Union Square. The trust came about as a result of Edison’s desire to have a monopoly over the industry. The MPPC was instrumental in changing the advertising tactics for the film industry. -
Robert De Niro: Il Volto Del Cinema Mondiale
Robert De Niro nasce il 17 agosto 1943 a New York, nella chiassosa Little Italy. -

IS A MOVING, DEEPLY PERSONAL LOOK AT THE LIFE AND CAREER OF THE ESTEEMED FIGURATIVE PAINTER In 1945, painter Robert De Niro, Sr.’s work was included in the Autumn Salon at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century gallery alongside the work of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and others. The following year, De Niro had his first solo exhibition at Guggenheim’s gallery, an extremely prestigious honor for a young painter. He continued to show at the highly regarded Charles Egan Gallery throughout the 1950s, but his career began to slip out of the critical spotlight. In the ensuing decades, he struggled to achieve the recognition that he desired. A 2014 Sundance Film Festival Selection, the HBO Documentary Films presentation REMEMBERING THE ARTIST ROBERT DE NIRO, SR. is a deeply moving portrait of the painter told by those who knew him best. The film will debut on HBO on Monday, June 9 at 9:00 p.m. ET. As a tripartite institution, comprising museum, art school, and honorary association of peer elected National Academician artists and architects, it is uniquely positioned to uphold this mission. It is in this spirit that we enthusiastically present the exhibition See It Loud: Seven Post-War American Painters drawn from the collection of the Center for Figurative Painting. The exhibition explores the work of seven accomplished artists all of whom it turns out are National Academicians: Leland Bell, Paul Georges, Peter Heinemann, Albert Kresch, Stanley Lewis, Paul Resika, and Neil Welliver. This group of painters all working during the post war years and mostly in New York City emerged in the wake of Abstract Expression- ism and forged an original and dynamic synthesis between representational imagery and the principles of abstraction. The Academy’s Senior Curator, Bruce Weber, PhD, was drawn to the focus and depth of the Center’s collection of almost 200 paintings selectively built on nearly 20 artists.
