G-, C-, and Ag-NOR-banded patterns of this species are reported here for the fi rst time. In this study, 2 karyotypical forms were determined. Each form had the same diploid chromosome numbers (2n = 48), but possessed diff erent autosomal morphologies. For this reason, the samples collected from the research area were karyologically separated into 2 groups, cytotype-1 (NF = 50) and cytotype-2 (NF = 52). All chromosomes possessed centromeric/pericentromeric heterochromatin bands in both karyotypical forms. It was shown that the acrocentric chromosomes of pair 8 in cytotype-1 have been transformed into metacentric chromosomes in cytotype-2 through pericentric inversion. Variation in the number of active NORs was also observed, but the modal number of active NORs was 8. Due to the chromosomal variation found in M. dogramacii, the cytogenetic results presented in this study may represent a process of chromosomal speciation. Sutton, April 2020 ABSTRACT Demographic and Environmental Drivers of Canada Jay Population Dynamics in Algonquin Provincial Park, ON Alex Sutton Advisor: University of Guelph, 2020 Ryan Norris Knowledge of the demographic and environmental drivers of population growth throughout the annual cycle is essential to understand ongoing population change and forecast future population trends. Resident species have developed a suite of behavioural and physiological adaptations that allow them to persist in seasonal environments. Food-caching is one widespread behavioural mechanism that involves the deferred consumption of a food item and special handling to conserve it for future use. However, once a food item is stored, it can be exposed to environmental conditions that can either degrade or preserve its quality. In this thesis, I combine a novel framework that identifies relevant environmental conditions that could cause cached food to degrade over time with detailed long-term demographic data collected for a food-caching passerine, the Canada jay (Perisoreus canadensis), in Algonquin Provincial Park, ON. In my first chapter, I develop a framework proposing that the degree of a caching species’ susceptibility to climate change depends primarily on the duration of storage and the perishability of food stored. I then summarize information from the field of food science to identify relevant climatic variables that could cause cached food to degrade. -

The level of niche divergence was found to be positively correlated with the level of genetic divergence and negatively correlated with the level of differences in position of geographic ranges of species and intraspecifi c forms. Frequency of different types of niche evolution (divergence, convergence, equivalence) was found to depend on genetic and geographic relations of compared forms. Among the latter with allopatric distribution, divergence was less frequent and convergence more frequent between intra-specifi c genetic lineages than between either clo sely-related or distant species. Among the forms with parapatric dis- tri bution, frequency of divergence gradually increased and frequencies of both convergence and equivalence gradually decreased from intra-specifi c genetic lineages via closely related to distant species. Among species with allopatric distribution, frequencies of niche divergence, con vergence and equivalence in closely related and distant species were si milar. The results obtained allowed suggesting that the main direction of the niche evolution was their divergence that gradually increased with ti me since population split. -

The ‘watershed model’ suggests that drier climates in the recent geological past have resulted in the contraction of forests around major watersheds, thereby defining areas of endemism. We test whether this hypothesis explains phylogeographical patterns in a dry forest-dependent rodent, Eliurus myoxinus, an endemic species widely distributed through western Madagascar. We sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome b locus and nuclear introns of the β-fibrinogen and the growth hormone receptor genes for E. myoxinus. Using a parametric bootstrapping approach, we tested whether the mitochondrial gene tree data fit expectations of local differentiation given the watershed model. We additionally estimated population differentiation and historical demographic parameters, and reconstructed the spatial history of E. myoxinus to highlight spatial and temporal patterns of differentiation. The data do not support the watershed model as a clear explanation for the genetic patterns of diversity within extant E. -
