BALAJI VANI Volume 4, Issue 2 February, 2010 OM NAMO BHAGAVATE PANDURANGAYA BALAJI VANI Volume 4, Issue 2 February, 2010 HARI OM January started with New Year’s Balaji Abhishekam, a celebration which benefits the entire year. Pongal/Makara Sankranti were celebrated on January 14th, at the Balaji Temple with a homa and Shri Shiva Kavacha Abishekam ceremony in the morning and Rudrabishekam in the evening. The morning ceremony featured a new Shiva kavacham, made in India and kindly donated to the Balaji Temple by Phani and Ramakrishna Yadlapalli for the occasion of Makara Sankranti. The homa was performed by N. Swamiji outdoors, and attendees were blessed with perfect weather, the full sunshine brilliantly illuminating the beautiful new kavacham. The evening Rudrabishekam was well attended, with many devotees enjoying the ceremony and receiving Shiva’s blessings. This ceremony was greatly enhanced by Lakshmi Kary’s generous donation of fourteen gallons of fresh cow’s milk from Sacramento. Swamiji explained the significance of Pongal/Makara Sankranti: The Pongal festival in South India is a day of triumph. Symbolically, the Makar Sankranti first harvest is offered to the Almighty—and that is Pongal. This is the spirit of Karma Yoga. Pongal is the festival during which the landlord Om Namastestu Bhagavan Visvesaraya Mahadevaya distributes food, clothes and money among the laborers who work for Trayambakaya Tripurantakaya him. What a noble act! It is an ideal you should constantly keep Trikagni Kalaya Kalagni Rudraya NilKanthaya before you, not only ceremoniously on the Pongal day, but at all Mrityunjaya Sarvesvaraya Sadadhivaya times. Be charitable. Be generous. Treat your employees as your Sriman Mahadevaya Namah. bosom-friends and brother workers. This is the keynote of the Pongal Om I bow down to Lord Shiva, who is the creator and festival. You will then earn their loyalty and enduring love. If you do this, then the Makara Sankranti has a special Salutations to Shiva who wears a serpent as garland, who is significance for you. The sun, symbolizing wisdom, divine knowledge three-eyed, whose bare body is covered with ashes, who is and spiritual light, which receded from you when you reveled in the darkness of ignorance, delusion and sensuality, now joyously turns forever pure and the very embodiment of sacrifice. on its northward course and moves towards you to shed its light and warmth in greater abundance, and to infuse you with more life and energy. In fact, the sun itself symbolizes all that the Pongal festival stands for. The message of the sun is the message of light, the message of unity, of impartiality, of true selflessness, of the perfection of the elements of Karma Yoga. The sun shines on all equally. It is the true benefactor of all beings. Without the sun, life would perish on earth. It is extremely regular and punctual in its duties, and never claims a reward or craves for recognition. If you imbibe these virtues of the sun, what doubt is there that you will shine with equal divine luster! He who dwells in the sun, whom the sun does not know, whose body the sun is, and by whose power the sun shines—He is the Supreme Self, the indweller, the immortal Essence. Tat Twam Asi—"That thou art". Realise this and be free here and now on this holy Pongal or Makara Sankranti day. The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day. People observe a strict fast on this day. Some devotees do not even take a drop of water. They keep vigil all night. The Shiva Lingam is worshipped throughout the night by washing it every three hours with milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc., whilst the chanting of the Mantra Om Namah Shivaya continues. Offerings of bael leaves are made to the Lingam. Bael leaves are very sacred as, it is said, Lakshmi resides in them. Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, such as the Shiva Mahimna Stotra of Pushpadanta or Ravana's Shiva Tandava Stotra are sung with great fervour and devotion. People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya. He who utters the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and deaths. Many pilgrims flock to the places where there are Shiva temples. The Story of King Chitrabhanu In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on the bed of arrows and discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu.

    Maha Shivaratri Maha Shivaratri (Maha Shivratri, Maha Sivaratri, Shivaratri, Sivaratri) is a festival that is dedicated to the worship Lord Shiva on the 13th or 14th day of the Hindu month of Maagha or Phalguna. The festival usually occurs in the month of February or March and is observed for one day and night only. The festival of 'Maha Shivratri' which literally translates to 'the greatest night of Shiva' is one of the most splendidly celebrated festivals across India. But, why is Shivratri celebrated? There is more than one Mahashivaratri story surrounding this occasion. Here are a few: • One is that Lord Shiva married Parvati on this day. So, it is a celebration of this sacred union. • Another is that when the Gods and demons churned the ocean together to obtain ambrosia that lay in its depths, a pot of poison emerged. Lord Shiva consumed this poison, saving both the Gods and mankind. The poison lodged in the Lord’s throat, turning him blue. To honor the savior of the world, Shivratri is celebrated. • One more legend is that as Goddess Ganga descended from heaven in full force, Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks, and released her on to Earth as several streams. This prevented destruction on Earth. As a tribute to Him, the Shivalinga is bathed on this auspicious night. • Also, it is believed that the formless God Sadashiv appeared in the form of a Lingodhbhav Moorthi at midnight. Hence, people stay awake all night, offering prayers to the God. A student's experience of celebrating Maha Shiviratri I came from Mauritius and Maha Shivaratri is celebrated during the new moon and during this period of time most Hindus will start there pilgrimage to the sacred lake of Ganga Talao located in Grande Bassin.

    Maha-Shivaratri Festival Maha Shivaratri Maha Shivaratri a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva. There is a Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, on the month's 13th night/14th day, but once a year in late winter (February/March, or Magha) and before the arrival of Summer, marks Maha Shivaratri which means "the Great Night of Shiva". It is a major festival in Hinduism, this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, doing Yoga, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, noninjury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva. The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams. This is an ancient Hindu festival whose origin date is unknown.     Sankara Stotra Makaranda 6.श्री द्वादशज्योतितलिङ्ग स्तोत्रम् / Sri Dwadashajyotirlinga Stotram Introduction: Earlier in Dakshinamurthy Stotra, we saw the Himalayan heights of Gnana Marga, and now in Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotra we will see the peaks of Bhakti Marga. The essence of all these 12 Jyotirlingas is that Shiva has been so compassionate (Ashuthosha) that he has manifested himself in the form of Jyoti to those devotees, who reached out to him for Darshan and protection. They were ‘Aarthas’ (distressed). There are four types of devotees as mentioned in Bhagavad Gita in the following verse. Bhagavad Gita Ch 7.16 चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मा車जना賈 सुकृर्तनोजुिन। आतो र्जज्ञासुरर्ािर्ी ज्ञानी च भरतर्िभ॥ chaturvidhaa bhajantE maaM janaaH sukRutinOrjuna | aartO jignyaasurarthaarthee gnyaanee cha bharatarShabha || Oh descendant of Bharata, there are four kinds of persons who are privileged to worship me – those who are in distress, the inquisitive, those that seek wealth and those that desire self-realization. All the 12 devotees here were ‘Aarthas’, including Sri Rama. They had some misery or the other and hence approached Shiva who immediately emanated from the Jyoti, and gave darshan and succour. Our Kanchi Periyava, Sri H H Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal has emphasized Jyotirlinga yatra and he personally visited every Jyotirlinga Kshetram and installed Adi Shankara’s idol in all the Kshetrams. In Kailash Manasarovar also, he has installed the idol. Shiva is always worshipped in the form of a “Linga”. Parabrahmam manifests in two forms – “Saguna” (assumes an “aakaara”, form - Saakaara) and “Nirguna” (no “aakaara” i.e., Niraakaara).

After explaining the significance of the kalash puja, where God was invoked and prayed to 108 (sacred count) times by the attending families and priests, Swamiji prayed for blessings for the Temple and the devotees' family. Then Swamiji conducted Dwarpuja and Grihapravesh and afterwards the devotees attended the glorious Mahalakshmi Abhishekam ceremony in the main temple. After the end of the Shodashopachara puja Swamiji in his brief speech thanked the devotees for their whole-hearted assistance in getting the arrangements done for the anniversary celebrations and blessed everyone with prasadam. Balaji Temple fifth Anniversary. Sangeet Dhwani organization arranged Kathak dance recital by Deepali Vichare and her students. Guru Bhupal entertained the audience with a beautiful sitar recital accompanied by Tejas.
