    After NTR Telugu Mass Film and Cinematic Populism Tn the previous chapter, I discussed the critical importance of the •J. social history of the cinema hall. Now I will focus on films, which are, after all, the reason why the populace gathers before the screen. In my examination of the films of Chiranjeevi, I will ask if there is anything at all in these films that can give us insights into the 'excessive' responses we encountered in the previous chapter. While I have suggested that these responses are usefully located as cinephiliac, the task of demonstrating their relationship to the screen remains. In this chapter and the rest of the book, I examine the Telugu film 'genre' locally known as the mass film, which was, by far, the most influential and economically important genre in the Telugu film industry in the 1980s and 1990s. Chiranjeevi is closely identified with the mass film but all other major Telugu stars of his generation featured in films of this genre. The mass film is useful for opening up the question of how the cinema may be political. This question will be an important focus of my discussion of the genre. Furthermore, in the mid-1990s the mass film and its stars became a part of a major crisis in the Telugu film industry. The crisis was, in part, a result of the collapse of the mass film, as also its past success. The examination of the mass film allows us to see how populism and blockage dovetail and in turn implicate Telugu cinema's superstars.

    Student Paper PARICHAY PATRA Spectres of the New Wave : The State of the Work of Mourning, and the New Cinema Aesthetic in a Regional Industry 1 Introduction My title refers to Derrida’s controversial account of his concern with Marx amidst the din and bustle of the ‘end of history’. Time was certainly out of joint and the pluralistic outlook of the great thinker was pitted against the monolith that orthodox communists used to uphold. My primary concern in the paper would be an account of the Malayalam film industry in its post-New Wave phase as well as a handful of filmmakers whose works seem to be difficult to categorize. Within the domain of the popular and amidst the mourning from the film society circle for the movement that lasted no longer than a decade, these films evoke the popular memory of the New Wave. Though up in arms against the worthy ancestors, these filmmakers are unable to conceal their indebtedness to the latter. The New Wave too was not without its heterogeneity, and the “disjointed now” that I am talking about is something “whose border would still be determinable”. I would like to consider the possibility of moving towards translocal contexts without shifting our focus from a specific site of inquiry which, in this case, is Malayalam cinema. The paper will concentrate upon the phenomenon known JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 81 as the resurfacing/resurgence of art cinema aesthetics in Indian cinema. Recent scholarly interest in the history of this forgotten film movement is noticeable, more so because it was ignored in the age of disciplinary incarnation of cinematic scholarship in India.

    Telugu Shikharam Award Dasari Narayana Rao born 4 May 1942, Palakollu, West Godavari is anIndian film director known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema, and few Bollywood films. He has directed about 151 films, produced 53 films and worked in more than 250 films as a dialogue writer, and lyricist. Most of his films emphasise social injustice, corruption and gender discrimination. He has received two National Film Awards, nine state Nandi Awards, and four Filmfare Awards South. Besides graduating with a BA degree, he used to take part in scores of drama competitions. During his career he has also acted in Telugu,Tamil, and Kannada languages. He holds Limca World Record for directing the most number of films. He directed films like Tandra Paparayudu, (1986), Surigaadu (1992), screened atInternational Film Festival of India in the panorama section, and Kante Koothurne Kanu (2000) which received the National Film Award Special Mention Feature Film. In 1983, he directed Meghasandesam which received critical acclaim at the Indian panorama, Chicago, 1983 Cannes Film Festival and Moscow film festivals. The film has also received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu.[5][6] He achieved national fame when he directed Rajesh Khanna in two different roles in Asha Jyoti and Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar in 1984. He has introduced actors and directors such as Mohan Babu, R. Narayana Murthy, Raviraja Pinisetty, Muthyala Subbaiah to Telugu film industry. He launched a popular daily newspaper named Udayam to counter the effect of Ramoji Rao's newspaper Eenadu. Political career Dasari was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

    A Legend of Indian Film Industry Akkineni Nageswara Rao (A tribute) P. J. Sudhakar Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao mesmerized the audiences with memorable performances in hit films like Batasari, Devadasu and Tenali Ramkrishna . Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao was of the black and white era known for his strong will power and positive attitude. The death of the 91 year old legendary figure in Indian Cinema due to cancer on 22 January, 2014, is indeed an irreparable loss. Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao popularly known as "Ever Green Hero ANR" is survived by three daughters and two sons including film actor Nagarjuna and several grand children. His grandchild Naga Chaitanya is also a film artiste. ANR was the youngest of five brothers, born into a poor family on September 20, 1923 at Raghavapuram in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. His parents, Akkineni Venkataratnam and Akkineni Punnamma, were from the farming community. His formal education was limited to primary schooling due to his parents' poor economic condition. Entry into Film World It was in 1941, at the age of 17, that he made his entry into the Telugu film, Dharmapatni , in which he played the role of the protagonist's friend. ANR, was discovered by chance at the Vijayawada railway station by the noted film producer, Ghantasala Balaramaiah , a popular film producer of that time, and was immediately offered the lead role of Lord Rama in his upcoming movie Seeta Rama Jananam. He predominantly acted in theatre , many times donning female roles since women weren't allowed on stage at that time. He has since acted in over 256 films, spanning the Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages to become one of the most prominent figures in the history of Telugu cinema.

He has directed more than one hundred and fifty feature films in a variety of genres. His works emphasize social injustice, corruption and gender discrimination. Rao has received two Na- tional Film Awards, nine state Nandi Awards including the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, and four Filmfare Awards South including the lifetime Achievement. During his career he has also acted in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada languages. Rao gained national recognition for directing Hindi films such as, Swarg Narak, Jyoti Bane Jwala, Zakhmi Sher, Sarfarosh, Wafadaar, Prem Tapasya, Pyaasa Sawan, Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar, and Asha Jyoti. Rao holds Limca World Record for directing the most number of films. He directed works such as Tandra Paparayudu, (1986), and Surigaadu (1992), screened at International Film Festival of India in the panorama section, and Kante Koothurne Kanu (1998) which received the National Film Award Special Mention Feature Film.
