(2016). Jamal Malik’s Motivation in Joining Who Wants to be a Millionaire Quiz as seen in Simon Beaufoy’s Slumdog Millionaire Script. English Language Education Study Program, Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University. This research analyzes Slumdog Millionaire, a movie script written by Simon Beaufoy. The script is an adaptation of the novel Q&A (2005) by an Indian author Vikas Swarup. Slumdog Millionaire script tells about Jamal Malik, an eighteen-year-old boy from Juhu slum of Mumbai who joins an Indian quiz version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. This research focuses on Jamal Malik’s motivation in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. The objective of this research is to find and reveal the motivation of Jamal Malik’s crucial decision to join the quiz. In order to reveal Jamal Malik’s motivation, this research has two formulated problems namely “How is Jamal Malik described in the script of the movie?” and “What is Jamal Malik’s motivation in joining the quiz of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” In conducting this study, the researcher uses two kinds of sources. The primary source is the script of Slumdog Millionaire, while the secondary sources are some related theories taken from books and electronic sources. There are some theories used to answer the problem formulations in this research namely theory of character, characterization, personality, and motivation. The approach used in this research is psychological approach. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds two results in this research. The first finding is the description of Jamal Malik’s characteristic. The research concludes that Jamal Malik belongs to a major and round character, and being described as a kind, brave, generous, introvert, and reactive person. The second finding is the surface meaning of Jamal’s motivation that is to meet Latika, the girl he loves, since they have been separated for several times, so they can reunite again. Meanwhile, the deeper meaning of Jamal’s motivation is to safe Jamal and Latika from a group of gangster. In the last part of this thesis, there are recommendations and suggestions. The recommendation is for the future researchers that they can analyze two kinds of topics. The first is about the true meaning of Jamal’s love towards Latika. While the second is about Salim Malik’s motivation in joining a group of gang. The next is suggestion. The suggestion is for English teachers. They can use the script as a teaching material to teach Prose, Drama, or Play Performance. Keywords: true intention, motivation, Slumdog Millionaire vii PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ABSTRAK Hapsari, Nastiti Adi. (2016). Jamal Malik’s Motivation in Joining Who Wants to be a Millionaire Quiz as seen in Simon Beaufoy’s Slumdog Millionaire Script. Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Yogyakarta: Universitas Sanata Dharma. Penelitian ini menganalisis Slumdog Millionaire, sebuah naskah film yang ditulis oleh Simon Beaufoy. Naskah ini merupakan sebuah adaptasi novel karangan Vika Swarup, seorang penulis asal India. Naskah Slumdog Millionaire menceritakan tentang Jamal Malik, seorang lelaki berumur delapan belas tahun dari kawasan kumuh Juhu, Mumbai, yang mengikuti sebuah kuis versi India bernama Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Penelitian ini berfokus pada motivasi Jamal Malik mengikuti kuis Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” AMERICA AND THE MOVIES WHAT THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES FOR BEST PICTURE TELL US ABOUT OURSELVES I am glad to be here, and honored. I spent some time with Ben this summer in the exotic venues of Oxford and Cambridge, but it was on the bus ride between the two where we got to share our visions and see the similarities between the two. I am excited about what is happening here at Arizona State and look forward to seeing what comes of your efforts. I’m sure you realize the opportunity you have. And it is an opportunity to study, as Karl Barth once put it, the two Bibles. One, and in many ways the most important one is the Holy Scripture, which tells us clearly of the great story of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation, the story by which all stories are measured for their truth, goodness and beauty. But the second, the book of Nature, rounds out that story, and is important, too, in its own way. Nature in its broadest sense includes everything human and finite. Among so much else, it gives us the record of humanity’s attempts to understand the reality in which God has placed us, whether that humanity understands the biblical story or not. And that is why we study the great novels, short stories and films of humankind: to see how humanity understands itself and to compare that understanding to the reality we find proclaimed in the Bible. Without those stories, we would have to go through the experiences of fallen humanity to be able to sympathize with them, and we don’t want to have to do that, unless we have a screw loose somewhere in our brain.

  • AS YOU LIKE IT, the First Production of Our 50Th Anniversary Season, and the First Show in Our Shakespearean Act
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past.

  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.
