Ash Wednesday: What it means and why Christians celebrate it.

Each year, Ash Wednesday, (Feb. 17 in 2021), marks the beginning of and is always 46 days before . Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, , reflection, and ultimately celebration. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where he was tempted by Satan. Lent encourages believers to set aside a time each year for similar practices marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection. Kelly Givens: Contributing Editor to Crosswalk.com The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. The imposition of ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. Worship services marking this symbolic time will be held in the DePiro Room on Wednesday, February 17, times to be determined. Throughout Lent, residents, staff, and families are invited to participate in a project commemorating this time of penitence and reflection. This will be an opportunity to share a meaningful experience, story, prayer, poem, artwork, song, quotes, or anything that has inspired you, and/or had an impact on your life. All submissions will be included in a Booklet and distributed to the community. If you are interested in participating, please call Mindy at the front desk. Deadline for submission is February 10, if possible. Your involvement is much appreciated. ______Eva’s daughter, Deborah, wanted to make her birthday a little special this year, so she took to Facebook asking family and friends to send Eva birthday cards.
