DESCRIPTION Allanton is located just over 7 miles from Duns and just under 10 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed. The population of Allanton in the 2001 Census was 86. The village is located within the Eastern Strategic Development Area (SDA) as defined by the SESplan. PLACE MAKING CONSIDERATIONS Allanton is located above the riverbanks of the Blackadder Water and Whiteadder Water which meet just north of the village. THE RIVER TAY - ITS SILVERY WATERS FOREVER LINKED TO THE PICTS AND SCOTS OF CLAN MACNAUGHTON By James Macnaughton On a fine spring day back in the 1980’s three figures trudged steadily up the long climb from Glen Lochy towards their goal, the majestic peak of Ben Lui (3,708 ft.) The final arête, still deep in snow, became much more interesting as it narrowed with an overhanging cornice. Far below to the West could be seen the former Clan Macnaughton lands of Glen Fyne and Glen Shira and the two big Lochs - Fyne and Awe, the sites of Fraoch Eilean and Dunderave Castle. Pointing this out, James the father commented to his teenage sons Patrick and James, that maybe as they got older the history of the Clan would interest them as much as it did him. He told them that the land to the West was called Dalriada in ancient times, the Kingdom settled by the Scots from Ireland around 500AD, and that stretching to the East, beyond the impressively precipitous Eastern corrie of Ben Lui, was Breadalbane - or upland of Alba - part of the home of the Picts, four of whose Kings had been called Nechtan, and thus were our ancestors as Sons of Nechtan (Macnaughton). Although admiring the spectacular views, the lads were much more keen to reach the summit cairn and to stop for a sandwich and some hot coffee. Keeping his thoughts to himself to avoid boring the youngsters, and smiling as they yelled “Fraoch Eilean”! while hurtling down the scree slopes (at least they remembered something of the Clan history!), Macnaughton senior gazed down to the source of the mighty River Tay, Scotland’s biggest river, and, as he descended the mountain at a more measured pace than his sons, his thoughts turned to a consideration of the massive influence this ancient river must have had on all those who travelled along it or lived beside it over the millennia. -

The Southwest of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and abundance and diversity of its recreational and sporting pursuits, such as shooting, stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the region’s numerous rivers and lochs. A wide variety of beaches, coastal paths and beautiful walks are within easy reach of the property. There are water sports and sailing on nearby Loch Ken as well as on the Solway, along with excellent hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and cycling along some of the numerous cycle routes, as well as a nationally renowned network of mountain biking routes in the hills and forest parks making up the Seven Stanes centres. The Galloway Forest Park well known for its beauty and tranquillity is also recognised as Britain’s first Dark Sky Park, and provides astronomers phenomenal views of the stars with a newly opened Observatory. -

Planning Policy and Access Team Environment & Infrastructure Scottish Borders Council Council Headquarters Newtown St. Boswells Melrose TD6 0SA 10 December 2018 Dear Sir/Madam Local Development Plan 2: Main Issues Report I am writing in connection with the consultation on the Main Issues Report (MIR) and would like to share my views with you on the future direction for planning in the Scottish Borders. As you probably know, I am in the process of researching the history of town and country planning in the Borders for a proposed book; my attention at the moment is devoted to the period prior to 1975 when the former county councils prepared the first development plans for the area and concentrated their efforts on stemming rural depopulation and attracting industry to offset the slimming down of the textiles industry. During that time, central government played an important part in framing the future pattern of development in the Scottish Borders through the Central and South-East Scotland Plan and the Central Borders Study of 1966, which established the principle of major housing and industrial development at Tweedbank. After 1975, the Borders Regional Council took up the challenge and over-saw the end of 100 years of population decline in the region and achieved a steady growth in population based on the diversification of employment and the attraction of workers to the area. Economic development was the cornerstone of this recovery, combined with an improved road transport network and housing provision. Since 1996, the main driving force would appear to have been the need to accommodate an increasingly buoyant housing market with only incremental increases in employment land provision. -
