Jones, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved By: Professor Valerie Lee, Adviser _______________________ Professor John Roberts Adviser Professor Rebecca Wanzo Graduate Program in English ABSTRACT The diverse arenas of African American literary criticism, speculative fiction, and academia in general have historically operated to marginalize, respectively, the critical contributions, artistic works, and theoretical engagement of black women. If as historian Robin Kelley asserts, "the marginal and excluded have done the most to make democracy work in America," then I extend that claim to suggest that marginality, particularly when rearticulated as a position of liminality, offers powerful critical perspective on contemporary and historical issues. Ultimately, it imagines different possibilities for the future of not only oppressed people, but for all people. In response to this tradition of marginalization, I extend critical race theorist Kimberle Crenshaw's notion of intersectionality to develop an interpretive frame that I term multiply liminal discourse. Multiply liminal discourse engages various so-called marginal aspects of social/political positioning. It allows the simultaneous analysis of converging aspects of identity as each one informs the other and posits this interplay as a liminal, rather than marginal, position of power from which important socio-cultural critique might be made and radical visions of the future imagined. This project employs multiply liminal discourse through the multiple marginal- cum-liminal positionings of black female subjectivity, black Diasporic space, and African spiritual epistemologies through the academically marginalized/liminal medium of speculative fiction. By examining various black women writers of speculative fictions ii from various parts of the Americas—Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United States—I establish the shared position of black female liminality and African epistemological frames of reference while remaining attendant to the particulars of difference generated by varied historical developments in African diasporic spaces. The examinations of the works within this text, utilizing multiply liminal discourse as an interpretive methodology, reveal the potential for enactment of "strategic essentialism" toward an integrated theoretical and practical liberatory discourse and politics. This occurs within the texts through reclaiming agency for black womanhood and black romantic relationships in Aline França's A Mulher de Aleduma; embracing black heritage particularly through one of the most demonized cultural legacies, African spirituality, in Erna Brodber's Louisiana and Nalo Hopkinson's Brown Girl in the Ring; and the expansive and inclusive vision of liberation ideology that embraces difference and change through Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. This manuscript concludes by discussing the integration of ideology and activism through multiply liminal discourse and the ways in which speculative fiction enables that integration. iii To my family iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This task could not have been accomplished without the help of many friends and associates.     EDITORIAL Sheila Williams THE 2016 DELL MAGAZINES AWARD This year’s trip to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts was spent in a whirl of activity. In addition to academic papers, author readings, banquets, and the awards ceremony, it was a celebration of major life events. Thursday night saw a surprise birthday party for well-known SF and fantasy critic Gary K. Wolfe and a compelling memorial for storied editor David G. Hartwell. Sunday morning brought us the beautiful wedding of Rebecca McNulty and Bernie Goodman. Rebecca met Bernie when she was a finalist for our annual Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Ex- cellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing several years ago. Other past finalists were also in attendance at the conference. In addition to Re- becca, it was a joy to watch E. Lily Yu, Lara Donnelly, Rich Larson, and Seth Dickin- son welcome a brand new crop of young writers. The winner of this year’s award was Rani Banjarian, a senior at Vanderbilt University. Rani studied at an international school in Beirut, Lebanon, before coming to the U.S. to attend college. Fluent in Arabic and English, he’s also toying with adding French to his toolbox. Rani is graduating with a duel major in physics and writing. His award winning short story, “Lullabies in Arabic” incorporates his fascination with memoir writing along with a newfound interest in science fiction. My co-judge Rick Wilber and I were once again pleased that the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts and Dell Magazines cosponsored Rani’s expense-paid trip to the conference in Orlando, Florida, and the five hundred dollar prize.

Eu tinha 19 anos, Abdias, 47. Para mim, esse encontro significou o descobrimento do mundo negro da América Latina. As duas obras aqui apresentadas tratam de eventos acontecidos no período de seu exílio político (1968-1981) e dos quais fui testemunha. So, I thought we would start with how I first got to know all of you and your work. I think the first one was Nalo Hopkinson. I met Nalo at WisCon, it would have been, I want to say around 1997-98, when WisCon was making a real effort to do outreach to people of color, and they had actually invited me to come, and I was a starving grad student at the time, and said I couldn't possibly fly from California all the way to Madison. And they had covered my expenses to attend the convention. And I got there, and there were five people of color, at the seven – Andrea Hairston: That was a good year. [laughter] ​ Mary Anne Mohanraj: Yeah, at the 700-something person convention. So they had an issue, which they were trying to address. And Nalo was one of them. Does that match up with your memory? And, I don't know, was that your first WisCon as well, or? Nalo Hopkinson: My first WisCon was right after Clarion, and I did Clarion in ‘95, so it was probably a few years before.
