A growing number of local officials publicly expressed their support for closing the notorious jail and reallocating taxpayer dollars to fund resources which combat the effects of poverty and systemic racism. Tishaura Jones, Democrat from the city’s 63rd district, is a 1990 graduate of Affton High and Clement Smith, Democrat from the city’s 71st district, is a 1995 gradu- ate of Clayton High. Tishaura Jones Cites High Expectations in Affton Jones, 39, who holds the leadership position of Assistant Minority Floor Leader, gives rave reviews for the “great” education she received in the Affton school district in south St. Louis County. LOUIS PROSECUTORS AND POLICE UNIONIZE TO MAINTAIN RACIST STATE POWER Whitney Benns* INTRODUCTION In late December 2018, St. Louis County prosecutors voted to unionize and join the St. Louis Police Officer Association (“SLPOA”), the infamous St. Louis City police union that represents many of the city’s white police officers.1 This vote came on the heels of former St. Louis County Prose- cuting Attorney Bob McCulloch — whose almost three-decade tenure in the position is most defined by his failure to win an indictment of Darren Wilson, the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown — losing re-elec- tion and being replaced by Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell after a ro- bust and highly successful grassroots campaign aimed at McCulloch’s defeat.2 Bell ran on a platform of police accountability and bail reform.3 * Lecturer on Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education.
