‘All wemen in thar degree shuld to thar men subiectit be’: The controversial court career of Elisabeth Parr, marchioness of Northampton, c. 1547-1565 Helen Joanne Graham-Matheson, BA, MA. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis reconstructs and analyses the life and agency of Elisabeth Parr, marchioness of Northampton (1526-1565), with the aim of increasing understanding of women’s networks of influence and political engagement at the mid-Tudor courts, c. 1547- 1565. Analysis of Elisabeth’s life highlights that in the absence of a Queen consort the noblewomen of the Edwardian court maintained and utilized access to those in power and those with political significance and authority. During the reign of Mary Tudor, Elisabeth worked with her natal family to undermine Mary’s Queenship and support Elizabeth Tudor, particularly by providing her with foreign intelligence. At the Elizabethan court Elisabeth regained her title (lost under Mary I) and occupied a position as one of the Queen’s most trusted confidantes and influential associates. Her agency merited attention from ambassadors and noblemen as well as from the Emperor Maximilian and King Erik of Sweden, due to the significant role she played in several major contemporary events, such as Elizabeth’s early marriage negotiations. This research is interdisciplinary, incorporating early modern social, political and cultural historiographies, gender studies, social anthropology, sociology and the study of early modern literature. -

Issues in Review Elizabeth Schafer (Contributing Editor), Alison Findlay, Ramona Wray, Yasmin Arshad, Helen Hackett, Emma Whipday, Rebecca McCutcheon Early Modern Women Theatre Makers Introduction: Attending to Early Modern Women as Theatre Makers Elizabeth Schafer Early Theatre 17.2 (2014), 125–132 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12745/et.18.2.2600 This essay introduces the playwrights under consideration and looks forward to the four essays in this section examining the work of early modern women theatre makers. The introduction ends with a census of early modern women’s plays in modern performance. This Issues in Review focuses on the performance of early modern plays created by women theatre makers, that is, women who wrote, translated, published, commissioned and, in all probability, produced and performed in plays. But these plays have been corseted and closeted by critics — some of them feminist — who have claimed access to the theatre makers’ inten- tions and have asserted, despite no documentary evidence, that these plays were not intended to be performed. In particular these plays have been half strangled by critics’ use of the anachronistic and inappropriate nineteenth- century term ‘closet drama’. The methodology used here to uncloset and uncorset three of these plays — Lady Jane Lumley’s Iphigenia in Aulis, Eliza- beth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam, and the Mary Sidney Herbert commis- sioned Cleopatra by Samuel Daniel — is to explore them by means of the Elizabeth Schafer ([email protected]) is professor of drama and theatre studies at Royal Holloway, University of London. 125 126 Issues in Review collective, creative, and community-based acts of criticism that take place when the plays are performed today. -

Prague Journal of English Studies Volume 5, No. 1, 2016 ISSN: 1804-8722 (print) '2,10.1515/pjes-2016-0001 ISSN: 2336-2685 (online) “The True Forme of Love”: Transforming the Petrarchan Tradition in the Poetry of Lady Mary Wroth (1587–1631) Tomáš Jajtner e following article deals with the transformation of the Petrachan idea of love in the work of Lady Mary Wroth (1587-1631), the fi rst woman poet to write a secular sonnet sequence in English literature, Pamphilia to Amphilanthus. e author of the article discusses the literary and historical context of the work, the position of female poets in early modern England and then focuses on the main diff erences in Wroth’s treatment of the topic of heterosexual love: the reversal of gender roles, i.e., the woman being the “active” speaker of the sonnets; the de-objectifying of the lover and the perspective of love understood not as a possessive power struggle, but as an experience of togetherness, based on the gradual interpenetration of two equal partners. The final course arranged by them dealt with persons and families from Kent who played a part in national history, the talks being based on local sources. This paper was one of the series. 'A name to conjour with' — Sidney! This remarkable family resided at Penshurst for two hundred years before the male line failed and the estate passed through the female line twice over. For almost half of this period of residence, Robert, 2nd Earl of Leicester, was alive. Born in 1595 and dying in 1677 at the age of 82, he straddles the stage, linking the fame of Sir Henry and Sir Philip with the autumnal glow of Henry, Earl of Romney and John, 6th Earl of Leicester. Yet, curiously, it is not a colossus, but an enigma which faces us: this nobleman, friend of Charles 1 and Henrietta Maria, special ambassador to Denmark and France, lieutenant of Ireland, speaker of the House of Lords, remains a shadowy, unreal figure who seldom reaches the pages of history and then usually in criticism. Father of three able sons — Parliamentary general, republican diplomat and theorist and handsome Machiavellian statesman — the father is the less real for his obscurity in an age of harsh black and white. In order to assess the man it is necessary first to consider his background. -

This quote is a reference to the Classical ‘Cursus,’ which state that you graduate from writing poetry to writing tragedy. ‘More women: more weeping’: the communal lamentation of early modern women in the works of Mary Sidney Herbert and Mary Wroth Marion Wynne-Davies University of Surrey ([email protected]) I. Introduction ‘More women: more weeping’, Thomas Playfere reminded his congregation from the open pulpit outside St Mary’s on Bishopsgate on the Tuesday of Easter week in 1595.1 It would have been a prestigious event; he preached from a newly refurbished podium to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London, who were gathered with their families in a recently constructed house, as well as to an assembled throng of teachers and pupils from St Christopher’s dressed in their distinctive blue coats and red hats. The ceremony would hardly have unnerved Playfere, since he was an ambitious man who courted publicity and, through a combination of guile, ingratiating behaviour and populist sermons, would go on to win recognition at court and elevation at the University of Cambridge. Indeed, this particular sermon, which he later entitled The Meane of Mourning, was so successful that it was immediately released in two pirated editions, subsequently being published in an authorized collection of his most famous addresses. The text combines Playfere’s usual populist tone and rhetorical flourishes in order to address the question of mourning and, in particular, to dwell upon women’s communal and excessive grief. When Christ died on the cross, Playfere informed his listeners, it would have been certain, both that more women wept then men, and that the women more wept then the men [since] the womens weeping came rather from weaknes in themselues … Naturally (saith S. -
