The Hawks had been 0-3 in season openers in the Dave Calloway era with all three losses coming by just two points (1998 - COACHES POLL Sacred Heart 63-61, 1999 - Princeton 37-35, 2000 - Rider 65-63). 1. This season, Anderson ranks fifth on the squad in scoring with 6.5 points per game. A 7. Fairleigh Dickinson 3-point field goal threat, he has made 23-of-74 from 3-point range. In 8. Mount St. Mary’s Monmouth’s victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) on January 6, Anderson 9. St. Francis [Pa.] booked his second career double-double with 14 points and 10 re- bounds. In the Hawks’ home win over Long Island, Anderson posted a 10. Quinnipiac career-high 20 points. 11. Robert Morris 12. The Hawks are 18-19 in contests in which their opponents score 61 points or more. over the last ALL-NEC TEAM two seasons.

G Antawn Dobie, LIU HAWKS TABBED AS LEAGUE FAVORITE C Corsley Edwards, CCSU Following an impressive title run last season, Monmouth is the prohibi- tive favorite to repeat as Northeast Conference men’s basketball F Jermaine Hall, WC champion in 2001-2002. The preseason rankings, as selected by a vote G RAHSAAN JOHNSON, MU of conference head coaches, were announced this afternoon on a media teleconference. Coaches did not rank their own teams on preseason F Peter Mulligan, UMBC ballots. The Hawks received nine of 12 first place votes, and were followed in the poll by Wagner, which garnered two first place votes. UMBC was chosen third, earning the final first place vote.

Monmouth head coach DAVE CALLOWAY continued to lead the Hawks back to the conference elite, as the team’s 20-point, second half comeback against St. Francis (N.Y.) in last year’s title game captured the school’s second-ever league championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. With the return of 2000-01 NEC Player of the Year RAHSAAN JOHNSON, coupled with the loss of just one starter, the road to the league crown figures to go through West Long Branch, despite a grueling non-league schedule that includes Seton Hall, Princeton, Gonzaga, and Mary- land.

Last season, Johnson ranked in the NEC top-15 in seven categories and led the conference in assists with 5.7 per- game. He also averaged 19.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and made 69 three-point field-goals. Power forward STEVE BRIDGEMOHAN, a 5.5 ppg scorer last season, and off-guard CAMERON MILTON, both of whom enjoyed a terrific 2001 postseason, bring an added element of senior experience to the Hawks’ lineup. Sophomore sharp- shooter JASON KRAYL is the top contender to inherit the spot left by GERRY CROSBY’s graduation, while junior center KEVIN OWENS has worked his way into the upper echelon of NEC pivot players. Krayl averaged 7.6 points in a sixth man role last season, while Owens produced 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 2000-01. The Hawks also can look to a strong reserve corps with forward RUSS ANDERSON, and guard TOM KAPLAN. HAVEN’T SEEN YOU AROUND, DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN? Monmouth welcomes four newcomers to this year’s squad. A trio of guards join the backcourt, including flashy guard BRANDON “HOLLYWOOD” OWENS, 3-point sniper “DEAD-EYE” DWAYNE BYFIELD and the versatile KEVIN SHORT. In the frontcourt, BLAKE “HAMMER” HAMILTON has already amazed Monmouth’s fans with his high-flying slam dunk routine at the Hawks’ Madness at Midnite. Byfield is the only freshman to appear in all 28 games for the Hawks this season. He is averaging 5.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. “WINK, I’LL TAKE STATE CAPITALS FOR THE BLOCK” Junior KEVIN OWENS currently ranks fourth on the Monmouth career blocked shots list with 99. Owens currently has some work ahead of him in order to catch No. 3 GIEDRIUS AIDIETIS. Aidietis registered 116 blocked shots from 1993 to 1997. STEVE BRIDGEMOHAN currently ranks sixth on the career charts with 68 blocks. Bridgemohan is in pursuit of ALEX STURM who swatted 86 shots from 1988-92. CAPTAIN MORGAN, MEET CAPT’N CRUNCH Monmouth selected its captains at a team dinner on Friday, November 16. Seniors STEVE BRIDGEMOHAN, RAHSAAN JOHNSON and CAMERON MILTON were selected as tri-captains for the 2001-2002 season. SEASON OPENERS With their victory over Rider, the Hawks moved to 5-14 all-time in season openers since joining the NCAA Division I ranks. Prior to the win, the Hawks had dropped their last seven season opening games, with the last victory coming in 1993 vs. Delaware, 91-79. MONMOUTH VS. RANKED OPPONENTS Monmouth’s 79-54 loss to then No. 22-ranked Gonzaga marked the first time that a team ranked in the top 25 on the NCAA Division I level had ever made an appearance at Boylan Gym. The Hawks, who earlier this season dropped a 91-55 decision to then No. 2-ranked Maryland, are now 0-13 all-time vs. top 25 squads. In last season’s NCAA East Regional, the Hawks dropped a 95-52 decision to then No. 1-ranked Duke. During the 1999-2000 season, Monmouth lost to No. 24 Miami, 67-46, and No. 20 DePaul, 69-62. In 1995-96, Monmouth lost to No. 20 Duke, 69-53, in the regular season and No. 20 Marquette, 68-44 in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks have also lost to No. 25 St. John’s (85-60 - 11/23/90), No. 18 Iowa (55-46 - 12/30/89), No. 18 North Carolina State (95-50 - 12/27/88), No. 11 St. John’s (98-58 - 12/23/85), No. 17 Georgia Tech (96-66 - 1/17/85) and No. 6 Georgetown (74-54 - 1/9/84). JOHNSON EARNS FOURTH NEC WEEKLY HONOR Monmouth University point guard RAHSAAN JOHNSON was tabbed the Northeast Conference Player of the Week following his exploits in wins over the University of Akron and Vanderbilt University. The reigning Northeast Confer- ence Player of the Year served as the Hawks’ catalyst as Monmouth recorded a landmark win and reached the championship game of the Hawai’i Pacific University Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu over the weekend. Johnson averaged 19.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 rebounds per game to spark the Hawks to victories over Akron and Vanderbilt, prior to suffering a setback to tournament champion Notre Dame in the final game. Johnson’s spectacular 30-point performance against Vanderbilt took on even greater significance as Monmouth became the first school in NEC history to post a victory against a Southeastern Conference opponent. Johnson, who sank 10-of-17 shots from the floor and added seven assists and four rebounds against the Commodores, helped Monmouth go ahead by as many as 20 points in the second half. In the Hawks’ victory a day earlier against Akron, Johnson contributed 19 points, eight assists, three rebounds and three steals. JOHNSON NAMED NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR FIFTH TIME RAHSAAN JOHNSON, the 2000-01 NEC Player of the Year, rang in the new year by leading the Hawks to their first sweep of a Brooklyn road swing since 1996. A two-time honoree this season, Johnson captures the fifth Player of the Week award of his three-year Monmouth career. The senior averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in victories over Long Island and St. Francis (NY). He shot an outstanding 22-35 (.629) from the field and went 7-16 (.438) from beyond the three-point stripe. In Monmouth’s 73-57 win over Long Island, Johnson hit 12-21 shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 28 points. He also added six assists, three rebounds and two steals as the Hawks stopped a modest two-game losing streak. Johnson, who hails from Washington, D.C., torched St. Francis (N.Y.) for 26 points (10-14 FG), four assists and three rebounds, as Monmouth came out on top, 86-71, in a rematch of the 2001 NEC title game. YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED IT BECAUSE IT WAS STUCK BACK ON PAGE FIVE Freshman “DEAD-EYE” DWAYNE BYFIELD is becoming a “go-to” guy for the Hawks. In his first career start, Byfield scored a then career-high 15 points, including 13 second-half points in a 57-55 win vs. St. Francis (Pa.). In the Hawks’ victory at Mount St. Mary’s, which snapped an 11-year losing streak at , Byfield caught fire by hitting 6-of-7 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range for a career-high 17 points. Byfield started his collegiate career by hitting at least one 3-point field goal in each of Monmouth’s first 12 games. The string was snapped when he went 0-of-1 vs. St. Francis (N.Y.). Byfield etched his name in Monmouth lore once again as he hit two 3-point field goals in the final minute to tie the score at 70-70 in Monmouth’s loss to UMBC in the final seconds. Byfield, the only freshman to appear in all 26 games for the Hawks this season, leads the team in 3-point field goal percentage (.394) and ranks second on the squad in 3-point field goals (41). THAT’S MORE EPISODES THAN TENSPEED AND BROWNSHOE EVER HAD There are six scheduled episodes of Monmouth University basketball this season. Thus far, the Hawks are 2-3 on the old boob tube, including a 91-55 loss to Maryland on Fox Sports South, a 79-54 loss to Gonzaga on CN8, a 73-57 victory over Long Island on MSG-TV, a 57-55 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on CN8 and a 63-62 overtime loss vs. Central Connecituct State on MSG-TV. In Monmouth’s last 15 games, Owens is averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He scored 16 points in just 18 minutes vs. St. Francis (N.Y.) on January 6 as he was a dominating 6-of-7 from the field. He also put forth a solid effort in Monmouth’s victory over Mount St. Mary’s as he logged 10 points on 5-of- 8 shooting. In the Hawks’ win over St. Francis (Pa.), he nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Owens also neared double-double numbers with 10 points and nine rebounds in the Hawks win at Mount St. Mary’s. Owens had his best collegiate game ever as he recorded a double-double with career-highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds in a win at Quinnipiac. SIX DEGREES OF KEVIN BACON Various Monmouth Hawks can be traced to movie star Kevin Bacon in less than six steps.

Geoffrey Holder played Daddy Warbucks’ trusty assistant Punjab in Annie. Geoffrey Holder was in Krakatoa, East of Java with Maxilimilian Schell. Maxilimilian Schell was in Telling Lies in America with Kevin Bacon. HOTTER THAN A TEN-DOLLAR GUN Monmouth University forward STEVE BRIDGEMOHAN is tearing it up in Northeast Conference contests. Bridgemohan has made 64-of-90 (71.1 percent) from the field. Included in the tally are a 7-of-9 performance in Monmouth’s home win over Wagner, a 7-of-8 effort in the Hawks’ win at Long Island and a 6-of-6 game in the Blue and White’s home win vs. Quinnipiac. OH MY GOD, THEY SIGNED KENNY Christian Brothers Academy standout and Spring Lake, N.J. native CHRIS KENNY signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Hawks. The 6-3, 185-pound guard was CBA’s second-leading scorer last season as he tallied 12.9 points. He also registered a 49.4 field goal percentage and added 1.3 steals per game. Kenny garnered first-team All-Shore accolades for his performance last season. Kenny’s best performance came last season as he logged a career-high 27 points when CBA toppled Gompers, N.Y., en route to the championship of the Stop & Shop Holiday Tournament in Massachusetts. When the Colts open their season, Kenny will bring a streak of making at least one 3-point shot in 21 straight games. Kenny is considered to be one of the best defensive guards in the state. He is also regarded as a top shooter and solid ballhandler. Next season, Kenny will join a backcourt that will include sophomore TOM KAPLAN and freshmen DWAYNE BYFIELD, BRANDON OWENS and KEVIN SHORT. He will also join former CBA teammate JASON KRAYL. FUN WITH ANAGRAMS Dave Calloway - A cold, wavy ale Cameron Milton - Romantic lemon Dwayne Byfield - Beefy, windy lad; By wild-eyed fan Blake Hamilton - I'm a lethal knob; Likable, hot man Brandon Owens - An owner bonds YOU BETTER KNOTT MENTION THAT AGAIN With Monmouth’s 84-60 drubbing of Mount St. Mary’s, the Hawks snapped an 11-year losing streak at Knott Arena which spanned 4,371 days dating back to an 83-63 victory in February 8, 1990. “WE’LL BE BACK IN TWO AND TWO” The Hawks have had five different players record double-doubles this season. Monmouth University got a pair of double-doubles in their season opening 50-45 victory over Rider. RAHSAAN JOHNSON tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds for his third career double-double. JASON KRAYL tallied his first career double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. STEVE BRIDGEMOHAN has accomplished the feat on two occasions. In the Hawks’ home win vs. Wagner, Bridgemohan registered 16 points and 12 rebounds. Big Bridge also logged 15 points and 13 re- bounds in Monmouth’s win at UMBC. The most recent double-double came at Quinnipiac, where Kevin Owens logged career highs with 28 points and 15 rebounds. The Hawks’ other double-double came as RUSS ANDERSON came off the bench to tally 14 points and 10 rebounds for his second career two-and-two. IT WASN’T AS BAD AS JACKIE MASON’S PERFORMANCE IN CADDYSHACK II, BUT... Monmouth, usually a solid team at Boylan Gym, lost consecutive home games to Sacred Heart (96-69) and Gonzaga (79-54) by more than 20 points. It marked the first time since the 1998-99 season that the Hawks had lost back-to- back games by 20 points or more. It also marked the first time since the Hawks moved to the Division I level that the Hawks had lost consecutive home games by 20 points or more. IS JIMMY CHITWOOD’S HICKORY HALL RECORD SAFE? Senior guard RAHSAAN JOHNSON is becoming a legend in Mercer County, New Jersey. The guard holds the colle- giate scoring record at a pair of facilities in the western New Jersey county. With his 40 points vs. Princeton in December, he set the scoring record for Princeton’s Jadwin Gym. Two years ago at the Northeast Conference Tournament, Johnson set the scoring record at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., where he also scored 40 points in a contest vs. St. Francis (N.Y.). IT MUST BE GOOD NEWS, IT’S BURIED ON PAGE 7 BY THE MASSAGE PARLOR ADS Senior guard RAHSAAN JOHNSON needs just 11 points to become the first player at Monmouth to join the 1,600- 400-400 club. The club includes all players to log over 1,600 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists in a career for the Hawks at the Division I level. He currently has 1,589 points, 459 rebounds and 407 assists. THAT HASN’T HAPPENED SINCE THE NORIEGA ADMINISTRATION In the longest such streak in Northeast Conference history, Monmouth has won 15 straight home games vs. Wagner College dating back to the 1987-88 season. The span includes 14 regular-season games, one of which was played at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, and one NEC quarterfinal contest. The last Hawks’ Boylan Gym loss vs. Wagner came during the 1986-87 season as the Seahawks upended the RON KRAYL-led Monmouth squad 77-63. Monmouth did not host Wagner during the 1999-2000 campaign. I LEFT MY WALLET IN EL SEGUNDO In Monmouth’s disappointing 96-69 loss to Sacred Heart, BRANDON “HOLLYWOOD” OWENS showed some flashes of brilliance in his relief role at point guard. Owens, who is expected to assume the quarterbacking role for the Hawks when Rahsaan Johnson departs after this season, scored seven points and added two rebounds and two assists in just nine minutes of play. NO SWEEP ‘TIL BROOKLYN Monmouth University completed its first sweep of the Brooklyn road swing (Long Island and St. Francis [N.Y.]) for the first time since the 1996 season as Hawks dropped the Blackbirds, 73-57, and the Terriers, 86-71. SOMEONE ORDER 50 OF THEM PINK FLAMINGOES TO PUT IN HIS FRONT YARD Ifty-Nifty, DAVE CALLOWAY earlier this season turned 50. With Monmouth’s 57-55 win over St. Francis (Pa.), Calloway moved his career win total to 50. Currently, the Monmouth graduate owns a 58-68 record. Of Calloway’s 58 wins, 38 have come in the last 58 games where Monmouth owns a 38-20 record. NEC PLAYER OF THE YEAR RAHSAAN JOHNSON’s statistics backed up his earning the Northeast Conference Player of the Year honor last season. Johnson was the only player to rank in the top 15 in the Northeast Conference in scoring (3rd - 19.1 ppg), rebounding (15th - 6.1 rpg), assists (1st - 5.7 apg) and steals (3rd - 2.06 spg). WHERE’S BOWSER FROM “SHA-NA-NA” WHEN YOU NEED HIM The Hawks have struggled on the boards this season and could use someone who could flex some muscles. In Monmouth’s victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Jan. 10, the Mountaineers outrebounded the Hawks 40-30. Their most recent rebounding debacle came in Monmouth’s home loss to UMBC where the Hawks were outrebounded by Re- trievers, 47-31. Other disasterous rebounding efforts were present in Monmouth’s losses to Sacred Heart on Dec. 16, 44-30, and Gonzaga on Dec. 29, 53-33. For the season, Monmouth is being outrebounded by an average of 2.5 caroms per game. “CAMERON’S ALSO THE ONLY GUY I KNOW WHO KNOWS WHAT STRATEGIC METALS ARE.” Senior captain CAMERON MILTON has stepped up his game in the second half of the season. In Monmouth’s first 12 games, the guard had just 16 assists and 25 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.64 and an average of 1.33 assists per game. In the Hawks’ last 16 contests he has 65 assists and 34 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.91 and an average of 4.06 assists per game. He also recorded a career high with 18 points in a win at Quinnipiac. HOW MANY CBA GRADS DOES IT TAKE TO SCREW IN A LIGHTBULB? Monmouth University’s men’s basketball squad is developing deep ties to local basketball factory Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. The first CBA installation was assistant coach GEOFF BILLET who was known statewide as a Colt sharpshooter. Joining the squad last season was current forward JASON KRAYL. Krayl continued what was a long line of Colt six-killers. Joining the team for the 2002-2003 season will be the next in the CBA pedigree CHRIS KENNEY. Kenney signed his National Letter of Intent last fall. In addition to the three basketball standouts, assistant equipment manager RICH CARRAGHER can trace his days of laundering back to his days in Lincroft. PLEASE HAMMER, DON’T HURT EM BLAKE “HAMMER” HAMILTON may have had a breakthrough game in the Hawks’ 84-60 win over Mount St. Mary’s. In front of a Knott Arena crowd that included many of his former high school teammates, Hammer put on a high flying act that would have put Chuck Yeager in awe. The freshman posted 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Hamilton posted three vicious dunks that made the Mountaineers look like little school boys. To show his versatility, Hammer also stepped behind the arc to toss in a 3-point field goal. DEAR MR. KOTTER, PLEASE EXCUSE JUAN’S ABSENCE FROM CLASS YESTER- DAY. HE HAD A BAD CASE OF GOUT, SIGNED EPSTEIN’S MOTHER For the second consecutive season, Monmouth has enjoyed relatively good health this season. With the exception of minor injuries to KEVIN OWENS and RUSS ANDERSON and a virus that briefly hindered JASON KRAYL, the Hawks’ have not been hit by an major illnesses or injuries. Owens missed two games with a sprained MCL and Anderson missed parts of two games with a strained hip flexor. Krayl played through his illness. BYFIELD EARNS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS DWAYNE BYFIELD earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors following his outstanding performances in victories over Mount St. Mary’s and Long Island. Byfield, a sharpshooting guard who is the heir apparent to Rahsaan Johnson in the Hawks’ backcourt, gave Monmouth a lift off the bench in the team’s 2-0 week. Byfield averaged 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals, while hitting 9-14 (.643) shots from the floor, including 8-12 (.667) from three- point range. He helped Monmouth snap an 11-game losing streak at Knott Arena last Monday, contributing a career- high 17 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Hawks’ 84-60 win over the Mount. Byfield drilled a career-best five shots (in six attempts) from beyond the arc. The Elmont, N.Y., product added 11 points, four re- bounds, two assists and a steal as Monmouth held off Long Island, 84-74, at Boylan Gym on Saturday. YOU NEVER SEE TWO DRUNK GUYS AT GAMES WITH ONE HOLDING UP AN “O” AND THE OTHER HOLDING UP A PICKET FENCE For the first time in the since the Hawks moved up to the Division I level, Monmouth has scored 80 or more points in four consecutive games. The feat was accomplished with back-to-back 84-point efforts vs. Mount St. Mary’s and Long Island, and 83-point game at Fairleigh Dickinson and a 95-point outburst at Quinnipiac. One would have to go back to the 1978-79 season to find the last time the Hawks accomplished that feat. DEFENSIVE DYNASTY Monmouth led the Northeast Conference in scoring defense in 2000-2001 as the Hawks allowed just 65.3 points per game. The nearest team on the charts was Fairleigh Dickinson who allowed 71.5 points per game. It marked the ninth time in the last 13 seasons that the Hawks led the NEC in that category. The Hawks opened this season by holding Rider to just 45 points, but the defense has struggled by its own standards, allowing 68.2 points per game. RAHSAAN JOHNSON VS. WINONA RYDER RAHSAAN JOHNSON probably owns a better jump shot and cross-over dribble and now he is more adept at stealing than WINONA RYDER. Johnson, Monmouth’s active career leader in steals, has picked opponents’ pockets 167 times during his three years in West Long Branch. At an average of $30 a ball, the going rate for Anaconda’s The Rock basketball, that amounts to just $5,010, just edging out the alleged $5,000 haul that Ryder allegedly got with a five- finger discount at a Beverly Hills store. However, the tally is much more than the mere $50 worth of sundries that actress HEDY LEMARR got caught lifting at a drug store in 1991. BE HOME BY ELEVEN, AND NO THROWING EGGS AT OL’ MAN FERGUSON’S HOUSE The main difference between last year’s championship run and this year’s performance is the Hawks’ effort at home. Last season, en route to a 21-10 record, Monmouth went 10-2 at home, including 8-2 in league games. This season, the Hawks are just 7-4 in Boylan Gym and 6-3 in NEC games at home. UP NEXT... Monmouth heads to for the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament. The Hawks will face St. Francis (N.Y.) in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Wagner College. It marks the ninth time in the last three seasons that the two squads will square off. BEING DWAYNE BYFIELD BEING KEVIN OWENS Favorite movie... Favorite movie...
