Hardware Department When your team is 17-1 and goes 8-0 in conference play to win the 2009 NEC regular season title, you are bound to pick up a few pieces of hardware along the way. Lori Hussong, head coach of the Rider University field hockey team was named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year with sophomore Virginia Egusquiza awarded NEC Player of the Year and freshman Marlaine Schneider was named NEC Rookie of the Year. Egusquiza, sophomore Megan Pisani and junior Margaret Ecke were voted to the All- NEC First Team with Schneider and junior Lindsay Rajeski earning All-NEC Second Team honors.

Sweet Home Mercer County Rider went 7-0 at ‘home’ this season in Mercer County, utilizing four different fields due to the wet weather this fall. The Broncs were 3-0 on the Rider campus, 2-0 at Princeton Day School, 1-0 at Stuart Day School and 1-0 at the Mercer County Community College field that will host the NEC Championship Tournament.

A State of Mind Rider was 8-1 this season playing New Jersey schools (losing only at Rutgers), 3-0 against schools from New York, 3-0 against Pennsylvania schools and the Broncs won single games against schools from Virginia, North Carolina and Connecticut.

Looked easier than it was Winning 17 of 18 games didn’t come without some trepidation. Rider was 6-0 in one- goal games this season...The Broncs won two games in overtime and two games in double-overtime.

7-10 split Rider was awarded Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors seven times during the 10 week regular season and earned the NEC Player of the Week award three times.

A Perfect 10 Rider head coach Lori Hussong is in her 10th season at the helm of the field hockey team and this is the 10th time that the Broncs have qualified for the four-team NEC Playoffs.

Time for a New Crystal Ball In the preseason NEC coaches poll, Lock Haven was picked to win the league, followed by Rider, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis (PA), Monmouth, Robert Morris, conference newcomer Bryant and Siena. The only team that was picked in the correct position was Quinnipiac which finished third after being picked third. The coaches did pick three of the four playoff teams correctly (Lock Haven, Rider and Quinnipiac). Sacred Heart was picked to make the post-season with Monmouth qualifying instead as the four seed.

Eight isn’t enough Not only have the Broncs made the NEC playoffs 10 straight seasons, Rider has advanced to the NEC Title Game eight times in the last nine seasons entering the 2009 tournament.

Sophomore Jinx? No sophomore jinx for the Rider squad. Sophomore Megan Pisani tied the Rider single season record for goals (21) and points (46) with her double-overtime goal against Lock Haven on November 1. Sophomore Virginia Egusquiza set the Rider single season assist record earlier in the year and currently has 17 to go along with 10 goals.

They can’t win if they can’t score Senior goalie Lyndsie Johnson gave up only one goal in conference play this season for a goals against average of 0.12 in eight NEC games. Overall, Johnson enters the tournament with a 0.59 g.a.a., second best in the nation.

Learn from the Experience The only goal Lyndsie Johnson allowed in NEC play this season was scored by the , today’s semifinal opponent.

Zero Hero As a team, Rider has 12 shutouts in 18 games and gave up only one goal in four of the other six games. Goalie Lyndsie Johnson has 10 complete game shutouts to her credit, a new Rider individual season record.

Lighting the Lamp Rider is out-scoring its opponents 54-11 this season including 29-3 in the first half.

Streakers Rider started the season with a team record 13 straight wins.

Leader of the Pack Rider scored first and has led in every game this season, including the loss at Rutgers.

96th percentile Rider trailed for only 54:25 (four percent) out of 1320:13 this season, all during the only loss of the season (at Rutgers).

In this category, number two isn’t bad Rider enters the playoffs second in the nation in winning percentage (.944), behind only undefeated Maryland. As a team, Rider is second in the nation in shutouts per game (0.67), third in goals against average (0.58) and save percentage (.817), fifth in penalty corners per game (9.89) and sixth in scoring margin (2.28). The Broncs are also 17th in assists per game (2.39) and points per game (8.39), 18th in goals per game (3.00) and 21st in scoring average (2.87).

Speaking of Nationally Ranked Senior goalie Lyndsie Johnson ranks second in the nation in goals against average (0.59) and fourth in save percentage (.814). Sophomore Virginia Egusquiza is fourth in the nation in assists per game (0.94) and 29th in points per game (2.06). Sophomore Megan Pisani is ninth in the nation in goals per game (1.17) and 13th in points per game (2.56).

Silly Solly Fact of the Game From the desk of Assistant Sports Information Director Brian Solomon... The 17 wins are the most for Rider since winning a program-record 18 in 2004 and a win over Monmouth Friday will tie the record. It is only fitting that the 2004 team will be returning to campus to receive the Outstanding Team Achievement Award on February 6, 2010 at Rider’s Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony.

By Month Rider was 1-0 in August, 7-0 in September, 8-1 in October and is 1-0 in November this season.

TGIF – Rider undefeated in Friday games Rider is 7-0 in Sunday games, 1-0 on Tuesday, 1-0 on Thursday, 5-0 in Friday games and 3-1 on Saturday’s this season.

Saw one recruit, got a teammate as well Rider has four sets of high school teammates on the 2009 roster, Gabby Burgo and Ellie LaBar (freshmen from Collingswood High in New Jersey), junior Kristy Kelly and sophomore Natasha Tukeva (Freedom High School in Pennsylvania), juniors Margaret Ecke and Lindsay Rajeski (New Egypt High School in New Jersey) and junior Allison Vogel and sophomore Rebecca Lotito from Shore Regional in New Jersey.

We’ve got class Rider has four seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen on the 2009 roster.

You from Jersey? What exit? 13 of Rider’s 18 players are from New Jersey with four from neighboring Pennsylvania. The Broncs have one player from New Hampshire and one from overseas (Spain).

STUDENT -Athlete For the past five semesters in a row, the field hockey team has had the highest team grade point average of Rider's 20 varsity teams. In 2008, of the 99 Rider student-athletes that earned Conference All-Academic team honors, either in the NEC, the MAAC of the CAA, 14 were from the field hockey squad. In both and 2007 and 2008 the team earned national recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for its team grade point average.

NEC field hockey summary (courtesy of northeastconference.org)

In 1998, field hockey became the 21st sport sponsored by the Northeast Conference. The nine member league is comprised of NEC members Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart and St. Francis (PA); and associate members Fairfield, Lock Haven, Rider and Siena. Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart shared the first title in 1998. In 1999, the first postseason championship game was contested with regular season champion Quinnipiac stopping Monmouth, 1-0. Rider came from the #4 seed to defeat Quinnipiac in the title game and win the 2000 tournament. The Bobcats turned the tables on Rider in 2001, edging the Broncs, 1-0, to capture their second championship in three years. Rider returned the favor in 2002, knocking off Quinnipiac for its second league crown. Rider and Quinnipiac met for the fourth straight season in the 2003 championship game, with the Bobcats scoring a 2-1 win over the top-seeded Broncs in the title match to win their third NEC championship. Lock Haven joined the conference as an associate member in 2004 and though ineligible for postseason play, went on to win the regular season championship. Rider edged Fairfield for the 2004 NEC Tournament title, its third in five years. Sacred Heart took home its first NEC crown in 2005 with a 1-0 win over Rider. Competing in its first NEC Tournament in 2006, Lock Haven came away with the title with a 1-0 triumph over Sacred Heart. Lock Haven repeated in 2007 with a 3-1 win over Rider and made it three straight with a 3-0 conquest of the Broncs in 2008. Following the 2007 season, Lock Haven's Blair Wynne was named a second team Longstreth /NFHCA Division I All- American, while Saint Francis (PA)'s Erin Reifsteck was tabbed a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

The winner of the NEC Tournament will face the Patriot League champion in a play-in game. The Patriot League champion will serve as host for the play-in game. The winner of the play-in game will advance to the NCAA Tournament which begins with first round play on November 14-15.

About the Northeast Conference Now in its 29th year of service, the NEC’s new Strategic Plan has established a blueprint for the future as the Conference strives toward becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The Northeast Conference’s commitment to academic excellence translated into national recognition for both individual student-athletes and the league’s member institutions as a whole. NEC student- athletes graduated at an 83.8 percent rate, which is well above the national average of 78 percent according to NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data. Likewise, a total of 19 NEC teams garnered public recognition from the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The league placed 42 representatives on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams, five of whom went onto garner Academic All- America Honors.
