In previous studies, we used mitogenome sequences for reconstructing robust phylogenies, which comprised in total 120 individuals representing the majority of species (69.7%) described from this biogeographical region (except Angolan endemics) and grouped into seven genera within the family Conidae. -

Received: 14 August 2020; Accepted: 10 September 2020; Published: 14 September 2020 Abstract: The venom of various Conus species is composed of a rich variety of unique bioactive peptides, commonly referred to as conotoxins (conopeptides). Most conopeptides have specific receptors or ion channels as physiologically relevant targets. In this paper, high-throughput transcriptome sequencing was performed to analyze putative conotoxin transcripts from the venom duct of a vermivorous cone snail species, Conus litteratus native to the South China Sea. A total of 128 putative conotoxins were identified, most of them belonging to 22 known superfamilies, with 43 conotoxins being regarded as belonging to new superfamilies. Notably, the M superfamily was the most abundant in conotoxins among the known superfamilies. A total of 15 known cysteine frameworks were also described. The largest proportion of cysteine frameworks were VI/VII (C-C-CC-C-C), IX (C-C-C-C-C-C) and XIV (C-C-C-C). In addition, five novel cysteine patterns were also discovered. Simple sequence repeat detection results showed that di-nucleotide was the major type of repetition, and the codon usage bias results indicated that the codon usage bias of the conotoxin genes was weak, but the M, O1, O2 superfamilies differed in codon preference. -

The compilation of the available references revealed a total of 1065 species belonging to 7 classes (Caudofoveata, Solenogastres, Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, and Cephalopoda). Most of the reported species belong to the class Gastropoda (706 species), followed by Bivalvia (279 species), Cephalopoda (50 species), Polyplacophora (17 species), Scaphopoda (10 species), Caudofoveata (2 species), and Solenogastres (1 species). Among the coasts of Turkey, the highest number of molluscan species was recorded from the Aegean Sea (825 species), followed by the Levantine Sea (807 species), Sea of Marmara (537 species), and the Black Sea (155 species). Of the 1065 mollusc taxa, 118 species are alien ones that originated outside the Mediterranean Sea. Among the listed species, Timoclea roemeriana (Bivalvia), and Sepiola ligulata and Abraliopsis morisii (both from Cephalopoda) are new records for the Turkish mollusc fauna, 11 species of the classes Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, and Bivalvia (Leptochiton boettgeri, Cerithium protractum, Similiphora similior, Cerithiopsis diadema, Rissoa guerinii, Crepidula moulinsii, Crepidula unguiformis, Bela zenetouae, Doto coronata, Lima marioni, and Limaria loscombi) are new reports for the Levantine coast of Turkey, and 2 gastropod species (Acirsa subdecussata and Monotygma lauta) are new reports for the Aegean coast of Turkey. -

Abstract: Despite their impressive diversity and already broad therapeutic applications, cone snail venoms have received less attention as a natural source in the investigation of antimicrobial peptides than other venomous animals such as scorpions, spiders, or snakes. Cone snails are among the largest genera (Conus sp.) of marine invertebrates, with more than seven hundred species described to date. These predatory mollusks use their sophisticated venom apparatus to capture prey or defend themselves. In-depth studies of these venoms have unraveled many biologically active peptides with pharmacological properties of interest in the field of pain management, the treatment of epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiac ischemia. Considering sequencing efficiency and affordability, cone snail venom gland transcriptome analyses could allow the discovery of new, promising antimicrobial peptides. We first present here the need for novel compounds like antimicrobial peptides as a viable alternative to conventional antibiotics. Middle Miocene (Badenian) Conidae from Lăpugiu De Sus, Romania: Systematical and Palaeoecological Data
STUDIA UNIVERSITATIS BABEŞ-BOLYAI, GEOLOGIA, XLVI, 2, 2001, 151-160 MIDDLE MIOCENE (BADENIAN) CONIDAE FROM LĂPUGIU DE SUS, ROMANIA: SYSTEMATICAL AND PALAEOECOLOGICAL DATA CARMEN CHIRA1, ILEANA VOIA1 ABSTRACT. The paper presents in synthesis the conids from Lăpugiu de Sus, especially those which are preserved in the collections of Palaeontology- Stratigraphy Museum of the Babeş-Bolyai University. Conids, carnivorous gastropods who lived in shallow waters from neritic zones, in warm seas, respectivelly subtropical to tropical, with a normal salinity, have been the most diversified gastropods at Lăpugiu de Sus during the Middle Miocene (Badenian). There are also species which could tolerate slight decreasing of salinity such as Conus (Conolithus) dujardini brezinae. It was remarked that the conids from Lăpugiu de Sus lived in the conditions of shore-offshore zones where the temperature of water was about 21ºC. INTRODUCTION The famous fossiliferous site from Lăpugiu de Sus is located in the Mureş River passageway. The Neogene sedimentary is situated between andesitic agglomerates in the north and the Poiana Ruscă Mountains`s epicrystalline in the south. At Lăpugiu de Sus Early Badenian deposits occur. Papp (1976) separated within these deposits the lower boundary of the Early Badenian, which can be followed in few sections cropping out on Cruşiţa Vinii Valley, and Fântânii Valley. The upper boundary of Early Badenian is outcropping in well-opened sections, such as those from Coşului Valley, Munteanului Valley, and Berii Valley. Most of the studied conids are from Coşului Valley. The very rich fauna from the Early Badenian deposits from Lăpugiu de Sus was mentioned since 1845 by Bielz.
