In order to make a com parison between these two works, a critical analysis will be made of each work, placing emphasis on the theme, style, and character develop ment. Although Madame Bovarv is a Realistic novel while TheVese-Requin is a Naturalistic novel, there still remains a great deal of similarity between the two literary works. Since Flaubert was the leader of the Realist school and Zola was the leader of the Naturalist school, it was felt that a comparative study of a representative work of each au thor would contribute to a better appreciation of these two phases of the nineteenth century novel. This study is divided into three chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction and includes a biographical sketch of each author and vital details concerning their milieu. Chapter two consists of an analysis of Madame Bovarv. In Chapter three will be presented an analysis of Therese-Raquin. -

ROY PORTER Wellcome Library, London Roy Sydney Porter 1946–2002 I WHEN ROY PORTER DIED on 4 March 2002, he had been recognised as an original, prolific and influential historian for a considerable time. He had been preternaturally productive for about three decades; in addition to his numerous and diverse writings, he was a frequent broadcaster and public speaker. Many people knew about him, his writings and ideas far beyond the confines of academia. He was both public historian and public intel- lectual. Roy worked prodigiously and with a special kind of energy. Since he published so much, it is tempting to list his achievements and to stress the sheer volume of work he produced. But to do so would miss the defin- ing features of the man and of his legacy. In assessing his impact and pay- ing just regard to his ideas and their influence, it is necessary to grasp the drives that lay behind this extraordinary and inspiring man. In writing this memoir I have had in mind those features of his life and work that seem to me to have been most fundamental; they provide the threads that were woven into his existence. I am thinking especially of his work ethic, his dedication to his students, his energy, his attachment to his roots, his capacity to bring people together, to positively exude encouragement and to embrace the tawdry, ugly and desperate parts of humanity’s past as well as its more elegant and elevated manifestations. The broad contours of Roy Porter’s life are familiar. Born on 31 December 1946, his early days are briefly sketched, and in moving terms, in his Preface to London: a Social History (1994). -

Cecil Courtney and Jenny Mander are right to observe in their introduction to this volume that the Abbé Raynal’s Histoire philosophique des deux Indes has indeed come a long way since Gustave Lanson dismissed it as an “oeuvre morte” in 1895 (p. 1). Despite the fluctuating fortunes of the text--from eighteenth-century bestseller, to nineteenth and early twentieth- century oblivion--Raynal is everywhere in eighteenth-century studies now. Work by scholars such as Yves Bénot, Sankar Muthu, and (to a lesser extent) Jennifer Pitts has placed the Histoire des deux Indes in a canon of anti-imperial Enlightenment writings.[1] The Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle is currently publishing a critical edition of the text, of which half of the collaborators on this volume are on the editorial team.[2] The introduction to this book is an essential summary of the current state of the field of Raynal historiography, and it makes clear just how much scholarly work went into the reestablishment of Raynal as an omnipresent figure in studies of the French Enlightenment today. As the editors readily note, the Histoire des deux Indes is not an easily approachable text. -

Spectacles of Suffering: Self-Harm in New Woman Writing 1880-1900 Alexandra Louise Messem The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2014 Abstract This thesis aims to provide an examination of texts produced by and about the New Woman of the late-nineteenth century, with specific reference to the trope of self-harm. It aims to explore the connections between the fictional bodies of text in which the New Woman was represented, and the damaged bodies of women who committed self- destructive acts. It examines both the religious frameworks within which Victorian women’s fiction operated, and three specific forms of self-harm which feature across a range of textual artefacts. To this end, the thesis discusses New Woman novels, poems, and short stories as well as newspaper and magazine articles, archival materials, and popular works of art, all of which discuss or display the damaged female body. The scope of this project is limited to New Woman writing produced between 1880 and 1900, although it does consider the ways in which the New Woman built on, or challenged, discourses about self-harm which appear in materials produced during the earlier half of the nineteenth century. This research demonstrates that New Woman writers drew on forms of self-harm such as anorexia, alcoholism, and self-mutilation, to express their frustrations at the contradictory requirements of women endorsed by conventional religion, at a time during which attitudes towards the body were changing. -
