Saint of the Day December December 1: St. Edmund Campion, Martyr St. Edmund Campion was born in 1540 in Protestant London. An exceptionally bright child, he was given a good education. He went to Oxford in 1557, during the last year of Catholic Queen Mary’s reign. In 1566, he was given the honor of leading a debate in front of Queen Elizabeth I, who was impressed by him. He became a deacon in Church of England, but soon regretted it. He left England to enter a Catholic seminary in France and became a Jesuit in 1573. He knew then that he desired to return to England and secretly minister to Catholics there, despite the dangers. In 1580, St. Edmund went back to England disguised as a jewel merchant. He secretly preached and said Masses for one year before he was arrested, imprisoned and martyred in 1581. St. Edmund is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. December 2: St. Bibiana, Virgin and Martyr St. Bibiana was an early Christian martyr, probably living during the late 4th century in Rome. Christianity had been made legal by Constantine, but persecutions continued. Bibiana’s parents were martyred, leaving Bibiana and her sister Demetria alone in poverty. They fasted and prayed, refusing to give up their faith. Demetria died of hunger and Bibiana, after undergoing harsh questioning, died a few days later. Their home was turned into a church, and is now the site of the Basilica of Santa Bibiana. December 3: St. Francis Xavier St. Francis Xavier was born in Spain in 1506. -

The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan
THE THRENODIA HIBERNO- CATHOLICA (1659) AND THE IRISH FRANCISCAN COMMUNITY IN THE TYROL By Nienke Tjoelker This article focuses on Maurice Conry’s Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol. Conry's work is an example of many Latin works written by Irish exiled clergy on the Continent in the mid-seventeenth century. In this contribution, after outlining the authorial issues, a summary of the contents of the Threnodia is given and then placed in the context of the expatriate clerical Irish of the 1650s. The piece concludes with a section on contemporary reactions to itinerant Irish friars, mainly from within mendicant circles. The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica, sive Planctus Universalis Totius Cleri et Populi Regni Hiberniae was published under the pseudonym of F. M. Mori- sonus, ordinis observantiae, S. Theologiae Lector, Praefatae Crudelitatis testis ocularis in Innsbruck, 1659. Although often mentioned by historians as an important source for our knowledge of the atrocities of Cromwell against the Irish in the 1650s, little research has been done into this work since Brendan Jennings published his edition of the work in 1947 with a short introduction.1 In this article, I will address the question of why this book was published in Innsbruck, and not in any of the more famous Irish centres on the conti- nent, such as Prague, Paris, or Louvain. The historical context of the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol (modern day Tirol in Austria, and Südti- rol and Trentino in Italy) seems to me a gap in the existing research on Irish exile communities on the continent. -

The Transculturation of Exile 89 Chapter 3 The Transculturation of Exile: Visual Style and Identity in the Frescoes of the Aula Maxima at St. Isidore’s (1672) As you enter the Aula Maxima, or great hall, at St. Isidore’s Irish Franciscan College, your attention is immediately drawn to the four large portraits of the friar scholars along the eastern wall, from left to right: Luke Wadding (founder of the college), Anthony Hickey (Wadding’s assistant), John Colgan (student and master of studies at St. Anthony’s, Louvain, and editor of the Acta Sanc torum, 1645), and John Punch, (professor at St. Isidore’s) (figs. 3.1–3.4). Each wears the brown Franciscan habit and sandals and is seated at a desk, where texts are open for both reading and writing; at least three of them hold a pen in hand. Each is in a book-lined cell, where we can read some of the titles on the spines of the books that fill their shelves. Atop each portrait we can see a Latin epigram painted in italics, surrounded by a decorative golden border, also painted to give the illusion of a frame. Below each portrait is a biography of each sitter painted in Roman capitals that gives the illusion that they were cut into marble. The colors that predominate are the muted tan of the vellum of the book spines and the grey green of the walls, relieved only by the light com- ing from the windows depicted in Wadding’s and Hickey’s portraits and cast in shadows in those of Colgan and Punch. -

GREAT AT LOUVAIN (Special Dispatch by the International News Service) London, Sept. 25.—1 n spite of the controversy over the exact extent to which the ancient city of Louvain was damaged, the allies contending that the Germans practiced vandalism and de- stroyed priceless architectual and art works, while the Germans declare they left the greater portion of the town unharmed, it is certain that the great university there was demolished. The destruction of Louvain has brought a pang to the hearts of the Great Irish people, for the University of Lou- vain was for centuries the great uni- versity for Irish students, and especi- ally ecclesiastical students, there be- ing no such institution in Ireland it- self. Salamanca in Spain and Quimbra in Portugal were others, and the Irish College in Paris—a much later foun- dation than the others—also did good Fashion work for Irish education; hut Louvain Pall the one most intimately connected was with this country. I. The Irish Franciscan college of St. Anthony at Louvain was granted a bull of foundation by Pope Paul V on 3 April 1607. This small house in what is now Leuven, Belgium, became one of the most intense centres of Irish engagement with Europe. Its history, both that of the friars who inhabited the college itself and that of the soldiers, diplomats and merchants who supported it, is also the story of Ireland’s decisive step into Europe. St. Anthony’s College owed both its foundation and location to Florence Conry a Franciscan friar and future archbishop of Tuam. Conry, a native of the townland of Figh part of the civil parish of Tibohine, barony of Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon, belonged to the learned family of the Uí Mhaoil Chonaire and had been trained in seanchas or traditional learning before leaving to study in Salamanca. He later entered the Franciscan order and, apart from a short return to Ireland as ‘confessor, adviser and favourite’ of Red Hugh O’Donnell just before the battle of Kinsale in 1601, spent his life in the Spanish dominions. The combination of Gaelic sensibility, Spanish courtiership, political astuteness and Latinate scholarship found in Conry helps explain the choice of Louvain as a novitiate-in-exile and house of studies for the Irish Franciscans. Founded in 1425, Louvain’s medieval university had developed into one of the intellectual powerhouses of Europe. Given its short distance from the border with the Protestant Netherlands the university had become one of the key centres of counter-reformation thought which, when combined with its proximity to the vast printing presses of Antwerp made it an ideal training ground for priests for the Irish mission. -
The Mysterious Identity of Saint George
THE MYSTERIOUS IDENTITY OF SAINT GEORGE Introduction Unlike the patron saints, Andrew of Scotland, David of Wales and Patrick of Ireland, who are all historically recognizable figures, St George of England is a patron saint with no immediately apparent historical provenance. Apart from what seems to begin with 5th-century folklore, most reference books relate that there are no contemporary or other historical documents relating to St George. Under such circumstances, it is rather odd that George became not only the patron saint of England, but also of numerous other countries, orders and occupations.1 The most perplexing anomaly is that, although George rose to prominence in the saintly ranks, he was originally deemed personally unsuitable by the Vatican, and the written accounts of his life were proscribed by Pope Gelasius in AD 496. But why would Gelasius have denounced George as a known individual if he were mythical as so often supposed? Clearly, there was an aspect of George’s character of which the Church did not approve – an aspect that was subsequently veiled and conveniently forgotten as the centuries passed. In this regard, the literature concerning the saint identifies an evolutionary strategy of character manipulation through more than 1,000 years. This ongoing creation of an acceptable heritage for George actually led to the emergence of an entirely mythical figure, in the course of which the real history of the man was lost. Original Records The oldest extant Greek manuscript of George’s tradition dates back to the early 5th century, and a revised Latin version known as the Acta Sancti Georgii was circulating in the 6th century.
