SUMMARY FOR At"GUST. The month of August was notable for three extensive cyclonic systems, two whose centres pe.ssed over the South Island-viz., on the 12th and 24th respectively. The third passecl in the north on the night of the 15th. About these three de.tee extensive rains were experienced, the heaviest occurring in the south-eastern portion of the South Island, where the tote.I exceeded the average considerably.

There wa.s, howtver, e. predominance of fair and mild weather during the month, except towards the close, when very cold southerly winds prevailed.
