A MESSAGE FROM FR DOUG Truro Diocese financial crisis You may have read that the Diocese of Truro has almost exhausted its financial reserves. Despite trying to reduce expenditure, such as through selling parsonage houses and reducing the number of stipendiary priests in parishes, the Diocesan Synod voted to ask parishes to increase their giving to the Ministry and Mission Fund by 28% at their November meeting in order to balance the books in 2015. This large, and unexpected, increase will cause enormous problems for parishes, especially when the international financial problems have still not been resolved. Statistics show that average weekly giving in Cornwall is the lowest in the country even taking account of the lower than average wage levels in the county. Parishioners are asked to review how much they contribute and, if possible, to increase it. Taxpayers are asked to 'Gift aid' their payments. I have to express my concerns. Consultations in September led us to believe that Deaneries would be asked to find ways of sharing the burden of the increased call. This has not happened and is unlikely to be changed until 2017. I do not want anyone to feel that they are excluded from membership of the Church simply because they cannot afford to give at the rate which seems to be expected. (The biblical passage about the Widow's mite seems appropriate.) I am also concerned that we may put newcomers off because of how much is expected. Clearly something needs to be done to prevent the Diocese becoming insolvent. Any suggestions about how income can be increased or expenditure reduced will be very welcome. December 2014 page 11 SCHOOL NEWS HAY BARTON November was a busy month for school - we raised money for Bed and Breakfast Children in need, we collected Shoe- boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse appeal, and we had a very special puppet show called the Magic Beanstalk Show performed just for us by Kneehigh Theatre. And yes, we do get lots of school work done as well!
