(Iron and settlement at Rås- valslund. A Viking Period village in the Linde mining district, Örebro county). Fornvännen 101. Stockholm. Archaeologists and historians have long believed that the iron producing areas of Middle Sweden were mainly colonised during the Middle Ages. Recent pollen analyses, however, indicate scattered settlement here already from the last centuries BC onward. A Viking Period settlement at Rås- valslund on the shore of Lake Råsvalen in Örebro county was partly exca- vated in 2002 and 2003. The results show that there was quite a sizeable population here from the Viking Period onward. The inhabitants probably based their wealth on iron production and export to the densely populated Lake Mälaren area to the south. Finds from graves at the settlement indi- cate wealth as do the remains of a log cabin with a sturdily constructed oven. This house type is otherwise unknown from the central parts of Viking Period Sweden. Chairman Outland grazing in the archipelagos, forests and mountains has a long history in Scandinavia and in practice all over Sweden from pre-historic times. Through millennia it has evolved regimes utilizing grazing resources and integrated milk processing at summer farms, “fäbod”, in distance from the homestead. That has been the basis for a special Nordic rural culture heritage and a unique biological diversity in the Nordic culture landscape. Rinmanite crystals are prismatic, up to 0.5 mm in length, with good {100} cleavage. The VHN100 –3 is in the range 841–907. Dcalc = 5.13(1) g•cm . The mineral is black (translucent dark red in thin splinters) with a submetallic luster. The mineral is moderately anisotropic and optically uniaxial (–). Reflectance values measured in air are 13.5–12.1% (␭ = 470 nm), 12.9–11.8% (546 nm), 12.6–11.7 (589 nm) and 12.2–11.3% (650 nm).
